"A Beautiful Mind" with an unhappy ending. That comparison may or may not be agreeable to you, but overall I enjoyed the movie although it was not one of Scorsese's nor DiCaprio's best films. I have to admit I spoke to some friends wandering outside the cinema afterwards who asked if I recommended they see the movie, and I honestly couldn't tell them yes or no. a good movie, not a great movie.

The movie was overall good. The plot and planning of the movie was extremely elaborate that I couldn't really pick out any careless mistakes.
The movie however starts very slow if you aren't truly paying attention from the very start. Every single word spoken is a clue to the ending, but that can only be realized eventually when one sees the ending, a rather tremendous twist.
Lastly, the cinematics of music and camera angles throughout the movie can really be appreciated and makes you slowly feel what Leonardo feels.

For those who enjoyed the book, this movie will not disappoint. The movie was more transparent than the book. My significant other, who did not read the book, predicted "the twist" about 45 minutes in. Leo was great and I enjoyed Mark Ruffalo more than I expected. I would recommend this movie to CERTAIN friends, it's definately not for everyone. It was difficult to follow at times. Ultimately, it seems Scorsese had a difficult time transending this thrilling book to the big screen without losing some of its mystery.

The movie Shutter Island was like a pile of burning tires. Sometimes it flares up for some excitement, mostly just smoldered and in the end just left a smell in the air. This movie is built with the premise of delivering a 67 ton plot twist but the crate was damaged during creation. You have to throw out common sense and let the movie take you on a dark ride with a confused driver at the wheel. I personally would not recommend this to my friends but others may enjoy or pretend to enjoy. Excellent on the images and acting but who can you believe? Not anyone in this movie.

True to the book. DiCaprio perfect for the role and did well. A little drawn out in places. I would expect that folks thinking that this was a different kind of movie from the trailers would be disappointed, but to portray otherwise would give away the ending. The person that went with me thought the movie "disturbing" (had not read the book).

Best thing about this movie was the promos. . It was disappointing to say the least. Too long and all over the place. Plot if any was unbelievable. Audience cheered out loud because it ended. One member of the audience remarked "That is two hours of my life I will never get back".

a great plot; several very good jump-out-of-your-seat moments coupled with terrific acting by much of the cast and punctuated by a nail-biting musical score that kept the excitement running high; i would definitely recommend!

I expected a lot out of this movie and was completely disappointed after seeing it. Poor edits, too much drawn out suspense and obnoxious audio made me wish I had gone seen Wolfman again. At least that movie made me laugh because of the terrible acting -- Shutter Island just put me to sleep. I enjoy Scorsese's films but this one has to be his worst. It might be worth a DVD/Blu-ray rental but not worth the time in the theater. SAVE YOUR MONEY and go see something else. Rent this movie later.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!
DiCaprio and Kingsley were outstanding! It drew us in and held our attention until the climactic twist at the end. Reminded us of another movie that had a similar plot twist, but won't say which one so as not to spoil it for anyone. Great escapist entertainment!

good old fashion thriller filming. plot line moved along at an ok pace. if you are aware the plot twist, the movie will make sense . it took me almost half way to understand what was really going on. It took my friend 20 minutes into movie to figure out what was going on. By the end you will understand what happened and all things fall into place. Leonardo did an Excellent job. He has matured into a excellent actor.

If you've read the book by Dennis Lehane than you should enjoy the movie. I thought the book was excellent and the movie was a good representation but as always not as good. Great acting by the main cast. I would recommend for a friend.

The trailer for this film is a little bit misleading, as it makes it look like the film is about paranormal activity in an asylum. Really, it is a psychological thriller, with a permise that has been done before.
Leonardo DiCapario is very good though, as is the cinematography. The writing is not as strong as the trailer would have you believe.

Long and hamfisted movie. Videography is good however some scenes were totally unrealistic. Leonardo's acting chops are clear however the editing leaves the movie grinding away to well over two hours. The trailers are misleading as the movie is not scarey. Basically I did enjoy it to some extent but I would caution others to not go unless you really like Martin Scorsese movies.

Best thing about this movie was the hype leading up to it. Had me slavering to see it. Points out how important marketing and trailers are to Hollywood. It was disappointing, though.Too long. Non-credible plot. Good performance by di Caprio, but other great actors like Kingley and Sydow were wasted. The ending sucked. Was he marching off to a lobotomy? Who knew? Who cared?
They would have done better to make it a straight-up horror flick, a la Island of Dr. Moreau.
Scorsese did not score with this dog.

I enjoyed this movie, and, having read the book several years ago, knew a little about what to expect, but was pulled into the plot by the great acting and imagery. Excellent job of slowly revealing the twist, keeping the viewer in suspense and not sure what to believe until the end.

That was 2+ hours of my life I'll never get back. Martin Scorsese really dropped the ball on this one. Predictable and even boring at times. I kept waiting for the excitement to begin. It never did. The ending was terrible and left me unfulfilled. Do not waste your money. The trailers were far more exciting than the film. The only thing scary about this one was what I paid to see it.

-trailer was deceiving
-a bit too long

With Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, you know you can't go wrong. You'll always get a well-made, technically proficient movie and great emotional range from Leo. It just wasnt' what we expected. From the trailers, my husband and i expected something more along a paranormal line and that wasn't the case at all. With that said, the movie was a good pyschological thriller but i would probably have preferred to rent it. With movie prices where they are, you gotta be choosy.
