Takes place around Boston in the 50's. Everyone does a decent job with the accent. Leo does a better Boston accent than anyone I've seen as he only highlights certain words and sounds in the Bostonian accent and doesn't over do the lack of "R" sound in words so it sounds believable. The movie starts off good but drags in the 2nd act, then picks up the pace and offers some good plot twists in the 3rd act to finish off strong. Like most movies, I think they could have shaved off about 20 minutes by deleting or shortening a few unnecessary scenes that dragged. I would recommend you wait till this comes out On DVD/BLU RAY/ON DEMAND and then give it a try.

I thought it was a good movie but it was disappointing from what the previews made it seem like. It was very slow and I don't like a movie that never explains itself in the end. What I did like about it was that you could never guess what was going to happen and if you did you were mostly likely wrong. I'm tired of the movies that you know before you've even finished. I would say see it because it wasn't horrible but it could've been better probably if they shorten it. I like they just added in a lot of stuff that didn't need to be in there.

Love Scorsese and DiCaprio but I was disappointed. Not a "thriller". I read there was a surprise ending and explanation, so very early in the film I guessed the ending. DiCaprio and Kingsley did great jobs. The rest of the cast "overacted". Film should have ended 30 minutes prior.

For the initial 3/4 of the movie, I was disappointed because I 'd read good reviews. Throughout I kept wondering how in the world people said this was a good movie - until I got to the end. I still wouldn't recommend it but might rent when it comes out on DVD now that I know the ending.

Shutter Island is a deliberately paced, hypnotic thriller with a fantastic cast. The setting of the film is rich and every bit as much a cast member as the human players. The production values are of the highest quality and the film will leave you wanting to see it again to see if you can catch hints that support your interpretation of events. If you like films that take their time building up the mystery, like The Others or The Orphanage, then I would highly recommend this film.

The ending was such a cop out I was actually stunned. I walked out feeling used.
I wish I could get my money back.
They should never have given Marty his Oscar. Now he's just lazy.

I always enter a movie with the hope and anticipation that I will be moved in some profound way and not want the movie to end. I was not disappointed, in the least.
The casting, the locations, the storyline and the cliffhangers all left me wanting more. I was moved, thrilled and full of anticipation. The huge property on a rocky shore and old school gray lighting had me hooked from the beginning.
The 2 hours and 18 minutes flew by for me.
I was shocked that my two dates to the same experience were not feeling the same. My husband mumbled that was awful during the credits, which left my mouth gaping. My step daughter was totally confused into silence by the dichodomy of our reactions, so said nothing one way or the other.

I read the book in 5 hours, it was such a page turner, and I have to say the movie did pretty well for me. The one part that really got me was the Rule of 4 note, could've stuck more to the book on that. Loved the ending of the movie though!

In some ways this had the feel of a Terry Gilliam film where you're not sure what is fantasy and what is reality. This was Scorsese's first attempt at a film like this and he did a great job. I think the only disappointing part was the end of the film which left you feeling very sorry for DiCaprio's character and was predictable because it was broadcast to us.

Set in 1954 off the Boston Harbor Island,"Shutter Island" is about an insane asylum that houses the really criminally insane. It would appear that a patient some how go out. US Federal Marshall (Mark Ruffalo) and his new partner (Leonardo DiCaprio) are called to investigate. They get intangled in a web of deceit, a prison riot, a hurricane and then if that wasn't enough they both get trapped on the Island. Shutter Island" is Dark, Full of Twists, Turns and Surprises. Nothing is as it seems. When you think you have it figured out "WHAM!" you get hit with another angle. Director Martin Scorsese is a master at giving you many angles and possibilities for a plot/story. The cinematography is amazing.

Everything about this film is perfect, from the acting to the direction to the storyline.
The photography/cinematography in this film is breathtaking and colorful. Leonardo Dicaprio shows a range of emotions from love and regret to fear and desperation. Michelle Williams is spot on as his wife appearing in dream sequences throughout the film. The thin line between insanity and reality/normalcy is crossed over repeatedly throughout the film. Very thought provoking-just what we deserve in a movie!

I loved it. The directing, acting, music, and scenery were fanstastic. The plot was very interesing. The twist at the end was very powerful and added great depth to the plot.
Martin Scorcese is brilliant and Leonardo DiCaprio is simply great. It definitely deserves an Oscar .

Scorsese and DiCaprio continue their love affair. Worth watching if only for the craft and the intensity that their synergism always produces. Graphic and dark, Scorsese's shot blocking always transcends most visual cinema pap. Leo jumps in with relish bordering on slightly over the top for this melodramatic comic book, masters Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow are obviously having fun as was I watching them work. Story? This is a lightweight dark piece that could have been an episode of TV's "Twilight Zone" or "Tales From The Crypt". Scorsese beats DiCaprio's character's flashbacks to death to lead us kicking and screaming to the obvious conclusion. Overly ponderous, I can think of at least 30 minutes that could have been left on the floor.

I agree with the other reviews that it started out slow. It turned out different than I thought from the previews, I thought it would be more of a thriller. Definately took a twist that was unexpected. Some scenes were "emotional" and dark. I'm a big fan of the movies that deal with mental institutions (my career in Mental Health) and this one didn't let me down. Will see again.

This movie was very slow going. I would not recommend it. We were very disappointed considering the rave reviews by movie critics. Everyone we heard coming out of the theatre were saying the same thing, "It was very long." It probably would have been good had it been half as long as it was.

I didn't read the book so, it took me through the end of the movie to figure it out. The movie was slow and boring to me although DiCaprio never disappoints. With a full movie theater, lots of people were not "excited" upon exiting the movie but were disappointed and frankly so was I. I would not recommend this movie

Mind-bending, twisted, what the heck just happened kind of movie! The kind that makes you feel like you'd just been swindled. My boyfriend and I saw it and at the end of the movie we had two completely different ideas of what we thought happened. We both absolutely loved it and talked about it for 2 whole hours after it ended. When I am kept guessing and feeling stumped at the end then I am pretty sure a nearly masterpiece had been created.

We were very excited to see this movie, but as it turns out, the preview showed the only parts worth seeing. It moved so slow at times and we came out of this one just shaking our heads! A big disappointment, as with Leo in lead and Scorsese directing, we expected more.

The movie starts out kinda slow and predictable. Then, you get an Ah Ha moment that picks up the speed of the movie and delivers an incredible ending that will leave you talking about it for some time after. The ending will make you think.
Overall, the acting was fantastic, Scorsese does great job at picking people and directing them. The scenery is beautiful in a depressing way, maybe even frightening to those that have ever been scared of a place like that.
