This is a very atypical Scorsese film. It feels so mechanical and manipulative. There are cliche scary-movie elements -- someone dashes recklessly down a dark and threatening corridor -- that surprised me from this usually polished and tasteful director. Forbidding music, unmotivated conflicts between the hero and the other characters ... on and on it goes, up to the surprise ending. It wasn't worth the 2+ hours of my time. Martin, snap out of it!

I had read the book before seeing the movie, so I did not have difficulty understanding what was going on. I can see where some people might get lost. It is definitely one of those movies that you might want to see again to see how you missed what was going on. I was curious to see how the movie would compare to the book. It was pretty good. I would definitely recommend it.

This is the first movie I have ever walked out on. When I watched Leonardo's interview on Leno he showed a sense of hesitancy that the audience may need to watch the movie more than once to get thru it. Good thing Zaffiro's was serving wine & pizza so I could enjoy the NCAA Final 8 while my friend finished the flick.

Mr. Scorsese creates a film noir mood, reminiscent of the 50's, and well detailed in execution. All in all, the sets were very well done.( However, I did have a problem with the Lighthouse.: All that metal was somehow lost on me ) I felt my attention wandering
somewhere in the middle. Cast was great. DiCaprio does it again: Tortured, confused, clever, but not too smart. My emotional response was sad ,rather than scared. A good film, just not a great Scorsese film.

The movie is quite fast paced and very well written. I enjoyed the movie from start to finish. I might even watch it second time next week to note some technical details in the first part of the movie.

The movie only expounds on what I already knew of the world's progress in the area of psychology - even in today's world. Plot left a few unanswered questions, but foolfilled the requisite one. No doubt, Dicaprio will get another nomination - great job! The movie preys upon our prejudice, and then slams the door in our face.

Scorsese delivers another well designed masterpiece with this gritty 50s style Film Noir . Loved the cinematography, the insane location and all the subtle visual metaphors. DiCaprio delivers an Oscar worthy performance. There are so many layers of perception and the last lines delivered, make you start all over.
A good film leaves the viewer questioning and reviewing after they leave the theater.

My boyfriend and I LOVED this movie! We heard from other people how great it was and they weren't lying. The plot was full of twists and turns and kept you second guessing yourself... also, Leonardo was the best pick for this movie, he did a wonderful acting job! The trailer does not match the movie. You think you will be seeing a scary and creepy movie based on the trailer but what you are actually seeing is a psychological drama. Little to no action and lots of talking is what you get with this film. I think if I had not been duped by the trailer, I may have had different expectations and therefore not feel so let down.

The acting by all was very good. The plot left something to be desired. The first 45 minutes were excellent, after 2 hour mark we stayed only to be disappointed with the ending. I cannot in good conscience recommend this movie for theater goers. This will be a good rental. Leonardo DiCaprio fans will love him, an excellent performance..

Shutter Island won't be nominated for a Best Film Oscar. Although the directing, acting, and production values were good, the plot is lacking. I don't like being left with "imagination" at the end of a film when I'm paying to be entertained. If I wanted to think, I'd go to work and they'd be paying me. Fortunately, I had a great date night with my husband, but the film was just average.

This movie was quite enjoyable. By no means was it perfect but it was really pretty good. It was a beautiful movie, kinda' like how The Cell was, only it didn't suck at all. I hope Michelle Williams gets some recognition for this film because honestly her performance was awesome. No wonder Heath Ledger married her. Go see it!
