This movie is easily now one of my favorite Scorsese Films. The film has great fluidity and pace. It is 2 hours and 20 mins long, but you dont feel like it is. The movie captures the mind of a "insane" person very well, and this is my perception as a psychology major. It does a fantastic job of capturing its audience throughout the film so they dont think about anything else. For example, there were a ton of high school immature kids in the theater when I went to see it. Before the movie started and during the previews, they were loud and obnoxious, but once the film started, you didnt hear anything else out of them. I definately would mark this as a must see movie.

Coming from a guy that likes to go to movies for entertainment value, I was not happy in choosing Shutter Island for a Friday night date. Considering the storyline, I left wondering if it was even worth telling on the big screen. Though DiCaprio was outstanding, I feel this movie is not worth the price of admission.

This original plot line kept me interested throughout. I kept wondering what would happen next right up until the surprise ending. DiCaprio deserves a nomination for 2010. Kingsley was also impressive.
Some people may be turned off by the open ending and the progression of the plot.

That's it. I will never see another Scorsese film again. Stupid, nonsensical non-plot idiocy -- just because insanity is afoot, is that an excuse for a terribly written jumble of baloney that doesn't make an iota of sense? Leo DiCaprio and the entire rest of the cast (Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max Von Sydow --how does he get these people to make these films, not show them the script first???) were completely wasted by Mr. Scorsese.
Nothing in this film was suspenseful, scary, interesting, vaguely entertaining. Lots of gratuitous violence, blood-letting, and silliness. I can't believe I wasted any money on this.

This is a very good movie. I have read that it is too long, the only scene that I think could to shortened is the first boat scene. The flow was good and it kept the viewer engaged. Dicaprio was excellent and so was Kinglsey. The explanations given by Kingsley and the ending were excellent. It left you wondering what exactly was the lead character obligation to society and to himself. It was far better movie than some of the profession critics reviews that I read.

Horrible. The worst thing a writer or director can do is not know how to exit a story-line. The hook at the end left me hanging. I would not recommend this to anyone.

If you are expecting a movie where you will be peeing your pants you're so scared, then you will definitely be disappointed. But I thought the plot was really good, and you were constantly trying to figure everything out until the very end. Everyone who says this movie was so so has waaay too high expectations. I thought it was awesome, and the ending BLEW my mind!

I thought maybe this would be scary and have me jumping out of my seat! It turned out that being a suspenseful psychological thriller was even more exciting. It was a twist I didn't expect but it does remind me alot of some other movies like . secret window or the usual suspects. Really great plot twist and it isn't that confusing if you pay attention and separate dreams from reality. Very good!

This movie had me sitting on the edge of my seat. The plot was ingeniously thought out, by the time it got to the end my mouth was dropping open at the surprise that followed. Wow! This movie was terrible and long!! For parents it is even worse! this movie unfolds and you learn that Leo's wife killed their 3 children and Leo killed his wife, making him crazy. The movie shows children that have drowned in a lake at the hands of their mother. It is a dark movie! This is not a detective movie as the preview led the viewer to believe.

I had read the book, so I knew how the movie would end. This took away from some of the suspense, which is no fault of the movie. I think the movie was good, but a little slow. Leonardo DiCaprio was excellent, as usual. I think the movie was hyped too much in the media. The movie was not as good as the hype, which was a little disappointing. Being from Boston, I liked that fact that it was shot locally. (And I am a big fan of Dennis Lehane!) I recommended this movie to my friends.

I was excited for two main things about this movie: the period and the premise. Unfortunately the only period indicators are poorly though-out costumes and limited understanding of psychology. As for the premise it is thin, plain & simple. The acting is only par. And I must say that I was disappointed with Scorsese's directing. I expected much better. I actually did not want to see this movie to begin with, thinking that it was going to be more of a horror movie along the lines of "The Ring". I quickly got pulled into the story line of the mystery, trying to pick up on little clues here and there. The visuals were quite powerful at times, and there was only one or two places where the editing was a little jumpy. Other than that, the story moved along quickly and smoothly. The end was not a surprise to me, but it was to others in the theater. Overall, a very good movie that I would recommend to others, but not necessarily a "must see". You can wait for the dvd if you don't want to spend for the tickets.

I hear people saying that is started out slow, but I only saw this as it building momentum. It was a true mystery, and I loved it! I admit that it wasn't what I thought it would be from the previews,but to me it was much better than the previews! My jaw literally dropped at the end! Fantastic storyline!
