Wow! This movie has a lot of twists and turns and just when you think you've got it figured out-Bamm, you are moving in another direction. If you enjoy pschological thrillers with a dash of suspense then this film is for you. DiCaprio and Kingsley are outstanding. Mark Rufflalo deserves high praise for a job well done.

Having seen the advertisements and read a few critics reviews, I didn't go into this movie expecting it to overwhelm me, and it didn't.. Reviews had mentioned the surprise ending, but as I saw DiCaprio's character regressing, I suspected the twist ... sorta like Nicole Kidman in The Visitors. DiCaprio showed that there are some parts he can't play, this being one of them. The movie's worth seeing, but wait 'till it comes out on rental, I say.

I am a HUGE Scorsese fan, loved everything from Raging Bull to Departed to Casino to Goodfellas. This not your typical Scorsese movie, but you see many of his trademark moves in the movie. There are twists and turn that make you wonder and all the pieces fall together in the end. You'll be talking about it for hours after its over and definately will need to see it again to pick up on everyting you missed. Highly recomment.

Initially, this movie appears to be some sort of horror flick. However, after watching it, it is more of a psych movie. The twist is not bad, wasn't something I initially expected, however... this twist has been shown before, similar to the move "Identity" with John Cusack.
Overall, the acting by Leonardo is superb. It is not a bad movie, but its not something I would not go raving about. If there are no other movies of interest, this is not a bad one to pick.
Overall, this is a good movie, not a great movie. It would be something for rent. But if you have time, watching it at the movie theater is alright.

Credit to Scorsese for channeling his inner Hitchcock, from the eerie string-heavy score to the all too fake-looking backdrops (opening scene on the ferry looks straight out of a 1950's studio), and the performances are more than acceptable from the entire cast. The mood of the film tries to walk the line between suspense and horror, but the horror bits come off more as visually disturbing but never quite frightening.
The film is certainly worth the price of admission, just don't expect the twists to provide any sense of fulfillment. Actually, much to the contrary, the biggest of twist of all is both painfully long in its explanation and ultimately frustrating.

Very good movie. Tip is to make sure to pay attention to details, especially at the beginning of the movie! Great job to Scorseses in directing the film. You will most likely jump back and forth as to how the movie will end, but that anticipation is part of the movie's charm.

This movie was unique to me in that it told a story. It was fun following from the beginning and trying to put the pieces together only to have an ending that blew me away! I am going to see this again to see what I can pick up the second time around. Not a movie for someone who does not enjoy a good story!

SO disappointing! Prepared for an edge-of-your-seat thriller. Took 75m.to intro characters and wait for the chills. Depressing! If scenes from Dauchau and the criminally insane aren't enough to have you thinking "WHY did I spend this much money to get deeply depressed...my mother-in-law can do that for free"...the musical score was a burden on the viewer. An attempt was made to mood-set with harsh,loud strings and oboes for the entire first half of the film.And only then did someone "get it" by introducing a solitary violin and oboe,sneaking around the corners and hallways of the assylum. Marty...you must have been in a hurry.Wish I could say the same for the pace of the movie.A definite "DVD" viewing,if at all.

Good movie, I would have enjoyed it more if I'd just let the movie play out and not think too much about what the ending could be. Kinda ended up guessing it 70% through the movie.
Di Caprio was quite good, not sure why he is getting slated.
Final Note: I would rate it just below 'Sixth Sense', as good as 'The Others'.

I expect the best from Marty his movies revolutionized film and story telling But I figured out the ending halfway through. This movie still gets 4 of 5 stars Acting compelling The chilling feeling from every patient to the scene in cell block C Every scene was drenched in suspense from the opening scene with the boat immerging from the fog with the haunting music to the lighthouse Cinematography outstanding using every inch of the island Not to mention the script was leaking foreshadowing and imagery Overall even figuring out the big twist halfway through this movie held my interest and kept me on the edge of my seat I highly recommend this movie

"With its 50's period setting mystery plot , this might seem like another genre piece for the Maestro director along the lines of "The Departed" . But the claustrophobic interiors, the abrasive modern-classical score, and the ugly mental depressive depths of the story combine to make this his grimmest movie since Taxi Driver. It begins as a B movie psycho-melodrama and eventually turns into something more Hitchcockian like Vertigo, but without the glamour. What Scorsese brings to the table, having created more than his share of compelling villain-types, is a renewed sense of horror and despair at the power of evil. Ben Kingsley and Max von Sydow are wonderful and DeCaprio is superbly cast for a change."

Good acting by DiCaprio. Scorsese perhaps over emphasized the beginning with some over the top cello music but, parts of the movie which may seem irrelevant, make sense towards the end of the movie. Very good twist and suspense. Definitely a psycho-suspense Scorsese film which will require an open mind and attention to detail. Good plot which will keep you thinking about it long after the movie is over. Watch it!!!

In my opinion, this is the best movie of 2010 so far. It was smart, thrilling, and had great acting. DiCaprio is brilliant like always and Kingsley played the part perfectly. I can't wait to see it again.

I was angry because this movie was so predictable! I also felt ripped off because the trailers led me to believe this would be a real scary movie and it wasn't. I can't fault Leonardo DiCaprio as he gave a great performance.

I read the book and this movie trully followed the characters and plot closely. If you like to get into the mind of a character and be confused along the way... with a wow factor like oh ya similar to the end of a great ending of a rollor coster and jumpling back in line to ride it again this is the movie for you!! It has been awhile since I saw a movie that did this to me thank you Mr. Scorsese, Mr. DiCaprion and writer Dennis Lehane and Laeta Kalogridis

Scorsese succeeds in crafting a great stylized thriller/mystery. Rather than flirting with the unconscious from the outside, he plunges into the vicissitudes of paranoid psychosis from the inside out with the intensity and colorfulness of David Lynch and the stamina of Alfred Hitchcock. DiCaprio is brilliant as usual. Scorsese employs his signature film still effects along with lurid color and electric

I would recommend the book, first, then the movie. Author Lehane's plot twists were faithfully conveyed and it was fun to see it all on the big screen. DiCaprio does his best and most times this is good enough. Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley were perhaps even a little better, but they didn't have to be onscreen every second. Loved the atmosphere, and the fifty's-style soundtrack which hits you over the head at every creepy turn, in case you fail to react to the on- screen happenings alone. In fact, it's all a little over the top, maybe a lot, but I loved it and Scorsese's enjoyment shines in every scene.
