I really liked it. It was nothing like I expected, but in a great way. It really made you think about what you just saw. Some questions are never really answered, but that's kind of the beauty of it. You're just never really sure. The way it evolves is wonderful.

This movie is nothing like the trailer. You may think your in for a scary movie...your note. Its a mind bender and very hard to follow. I would wait for it because your better off with the rewind feature just to review what just happened. It kept me in the theater but, wouldn't recommend spending the money on it.

Scorsese does a phenomenal job of creating a dark setting. DiCaprio's performance does not disappoint. It's nothing short of award winning- intense, passionate,& raw.Yet another incredibly convincing portrayal of his neurotic characters. As the plot progresses &the story unravels, it allows you to consider what reality may be & if it really is anything more than what our minds create. The storyline is very engaging, it'll keep your attention to the very end as you try to uncover what is truly happening at Ashecliffe. Don't pay attention to negative reviews, this movie is a must see!

Seeing previews for this movie I expected a creepy horror flick. What I got was a movie that was never intended to be a horror movie. One that was poorly edited, filled with distracting continuity errors, & whose "Shyamalan" twist was easily figured out within the first 20 minutes. Martin Scorsese, what were you thinking?
Fortunately, DiCaprio was able to make the movie watchable, as did the limited, but wonderful performance by Max Von Sydow.
Ted Levine was also a bright spot, though sorely under used as the Warden. His one main scene with Dicaprio was my favorite of the entire movie.
Save you money if you are looking for a scare, in fact I would recommend you save your money and wait to rent even if you aren't looking for a scare

I can't believe I had to read through the first 8 pages of reviews before I saw a reference to the novel! I read Dennis Lehane's book several years ago and was so looking forward to the movie, but, was afraid I would be disappointed as I usually am when I see a movie based on a book that was as fantastic as Shutter Island. That was not the case with this movie. It was INCREDIBLE! I had forgotten many details about the book and was completely captivated by the way it was presented in the movie as were all of the other audience members as there was barely a sound or movement throughout the entire 2 + hours. Great movie...I'll probably see it again and I rarely go to the movies!

Great movie, very suspenseful. Acting was terrific. Felt like I was on the edge of my seat throughout and was surprised at the ending which is a good thing! Not a generic cookie cutter type film, though one wouldn't expect less from Scorcese!

Very effective at foreboding of things to come - I kept expecting surprises to jump out of nowhere. Nothing altogether that shocking jumped out though. A very fine job at misdirection - that if the movie concluded how I was suspecting midway through would have been completely satisfying. How it did play out still kept the tension high and was ultimately OK if just in a downbeat way. Good performances all the way around.

This is really a well-executed period piece from the '50's that actually works well in the theater due to the outstanding locations and cinematography, but probably does not at home due to the pace (deliberate) and the need to pay attention. The movie does have some less than credible scenes, does have some gaps in information, but if you go with it, at the end of the day it keeps you revisiting some of the earlier scenes and dialog well after you leave the theater.
Does not rise to "great" by any means, and does tend to hit you with nuance like a freight train (several odes to Hitchcock, for example which are nearly comedic in their lack of subtlety), but in the end, a good movie to pass some time in the theater.

I only gave it 4 stars because I can't give it 4 and 1/2...it was definitely one of the better movies I've seen in a long while. Great acting, great story, and incredible direction makes this a must-see! The movie is MUCH MORE eerie and spooky than the commercials make it out to be...I loved that. Bottom line: GO SEE IT! I love that the film demonstrates that the truth is truly a tricky thing. It really depends on the perspective. Whose story is it? My husband and I have been talking about different scenes since we watched the film. The acting was superb, loved the direction and style. Not much more I could ask for in a film.

The movie kept me humored and thrilled from the first scene till the last! The plot is strong and thrilling which kept me guessing, but the twist toward the end left me a bit unsatisfied.
Director Martin Scorsese scores another hit. The direction, acting, and production were all excellent. Although I'm not really a Leonardo DiCaprio fan he was very good in this. Ben Kingsley, and Max Von Sydow were excellent. They are always a pleasure to watch. Botton line, this is what a thriller is suppose to be. Especially a psychological thriller. So, I say go see it. Personally I think it could have had a bit more definition.

First, stop making trailers this long. Don't give away the cow. Second, the twist is older than my grandpappy's danglers. Anybody seen Stephen King's Dark Half? Or Psycho? Or Ghost Ship? Or the Others? 6th Sense? Weakness. And once the twist is revealed there SOOO many plot holes. Like how did they start on the ferry? They just bought him a suit and took him out for an hour joyride and said ok now we're investigating that case youve been assigned to? Or c'mon like the WHOLE sanitarium was in on it like the frigging Truman Show? Try getting two ppl to do what you want at work much less a staff of 350 ppl to "pretend". That was crap. Also he would have killed himself on those rocky cliffs with those soft-soled Docksiders. C plus.

This is intelligent, thought provoking entertainment that, taken on its surface is a simple story, but is very complex. DiCaprio is fantastic, his best role to surpass my previous favorite of his in The Aviator. Ben Kingsley really steals the show, playing such a calculating psychiatrist that each scene he's in, he oozes deception and depth. I can't say that I LOVED this film. It's languid pacing and ultimate reveal won't work for some, but this is a movie that I believe I WILL love the second and probably third times. There's so much at play here you'll want to see it again to apply what you learned. It's certainly not a "feel-good" film, but it's definitely THINK-GOOD.
