This movie was eerie without actually being scary. It had a very Hitchcockian feel and some excellent performances. DiCaprio was a little over the top, but it felt right for this movie and Ben Kingsley's character set exactly the right tone. This movie may have dragged on a little bit too long but in the grand scheme it was a thrilling ride with a nice twist. I would definitely recommend this movie.

Based on the trailers and reviews, I expected a supernatural-type thriller and ended up seeing a twisting and turning, conspiracy packed mystery. I kept waiting for the "real" storyline to come through. The acting, however, was first rate and Leonardo diCaprio looked less like a teen age boy to me in this role than in any others I have seen him in.
Sometimes slow and plodding, this would best be seen when it comes out on DVD so the viewer can fast forward through the boring parts.

This was a very well made film. Great cinematography. The researchers/writers obviously did a lot of digging into the recent past of Mental Illness Treatment's. The history in this period picture I found to be very accurate. As well as enjoyable. The movie kept me wondering where It's was going right up to the very end. Way to go Leo! Good stuff!!

I typically go to action or sci-fi movies, so a psychological thriller was different for me. The movie held my attention, and was interesting. It was more of an intellectual ride of trying to put the story together, than admiring movie technology. There were a lot of flashbacks and jumping forward to the present moment, with the added twist of being located at a sanitarium. There was a lot of information given and the audience has to put all the pieces together to figure out the details of the entire storyline before you reach the end of the movie.

Dark, deary, dull, dank, and drowning in dialogue.
If you liked Mystic River (another dark, dank, pointless movie) you might enjoy this movie, but to be honest I can't imagine anyone enjoying this movie. It is downlifting (as in
opposite of uplifting)
At best it is also silly and preposterous.

Very disappointing! I was falling asleep through the last hour and beginning to be very sorry I went. The movie telegraphs the plot in neon! I expected more from Martin Scorsese and while Leonardo did a bang up acting job, he couldn't transcend the turgidness of this film. I will not recommend this and give it 2 out of 5 stars.

This movie was very slow. Although it seems like an attempt to mimic a Hitchcock thriller, it falls short. The premise is good and the story line seems like it would make a good movie, but falls short of keeping attention and at times does not quite make sense.

Nothing made me shutter in this movie. My wife and I looked at each other after this movie and wondered why we couldn't wait to see it. It didn't flow, made no sense and left you without a feeling of the movie ending.

This film is tediously long; a good half hour could have been edited out, with no loss. I had it figured out within the first half hour, but my companion did not, and found the ending to be a surprise.
the good - performances, cinematography, ending lends itself to some discussion points.
the bad - convoluted plot could be challenging for some, too long.
i recommend waiting for dvd or cable, as i think many viewers will want to be able to rewind.

The acting was top notch as was the directing and score by Robbie Robertson of the Band, but I am getting weary of movies that misdirect you for two hours only to then hit you with a somewhat predictable "twist" ending. The story is very dark and the music keeps you aware of that at all times.
People will tout this as intellectual, but the story is just a head game and somewhat below top notch for Scorsese. If you're looking for a long depressing tale where everything is dependent on a twist ending, this is your film. It wasn't mine and I usually love his work.

Shutter Island was a disappointment. The music was distractingly bad. Leo had a wrinkled forhead throughout the whole movie. The suporting acting was good. Martin S. may be past his prime for directing. Althought the movie had some interesting plot twists it was overall too long and had disturbing scenes that I regret seeing. I love most all movies but found this one a waste of my 2.5 hours.

I've been waiting to see this movies since I saw previews for it last summer - finally it comes out and I couldn't wait to see it. Yes, it has good acting, but not a good movie. I had this figured out in about 45 minutes what was going on. It dragged on and I couldn't wait for it to end.

From the preview's this movie looked to be a hit mystery flick and it delivered with great acting from the cast of Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley. The excellent setting's and weather conditions added to the dark dreary feel of this movie. The only distrubing part's of the film to me were the dead or bloody children. Although this movie reminded me of the same type of ending similiar to the Six Sense twist, it kept your attention and you go away asking yourself - " is it better to live life as a distrubed person or lobotomize and die as good one?

This film is very well crafted and beautifuly shot. You are immersed into the time period and the island hospital for the insane. Wonderful acting, well scripted and lovingly crafted by Martin Scorsese. Leonardo does a fine job of keeping you focused on the film and is well supported by everyone else.
I just wish the story was more intense and harrowing. A backdrop such as this deserved to be nail biting and cause profuse sweating and night terrors. Sorry Sorsese.... you just didn't push the obvious envelope of terror that this setting deserved. However, this is still a fine film on the order of Beautiful Mind or Catch Me if You Can.

This is one that has not come along for some time. Hidden insights throughout the film, great cast and acting. Leonardo pulls it all in. If you loved Hitchcock or Serling, it is as if they were contributing from the beyond. Go see this movie and definitely buy the DVD for your collection.

I went with a friend who picked the movie and thought it was going to be a slice and dice suspense but was pleased with the psychological thriller that it turned out to be. Kudos to Leonardo. Never had really seen him as an actor with this kind of depth before. I recommend to anyone that likes a good thinker of a movie.

It was nothing that I expected. I thought it was going to be a scary horror movie, but instead it was a typical psychological thriller.
