Scorsese took a very long time to tell a very short story. Trailers looked promising, unfortunately the movie did not live up to the trailers.
The "twist" was soooooo predictable. It would rank right up there with The Sixth Sense.
I wish I could get my $21.50 back, but it is long gone.
I would recommend to wait until it hits HBO, Cinemax, TMC etc...

This movie is NOT FOR KIDS-CAN'T BELIEVE SOMEONE TOOK THEIR 10 1/2 (1/2 MAKES NO DIFFERENCE!) TO SEE IT -HEED THE "R" WARNING PEOPLE!!
Forget all the bad reviews, most of those people don't go see movies on a regular basis.
This movie is dark & not uplifting but interesting. I suspect the book is better, but that's true for most movies. It's a good plot twist, hooray to those who felt so intellectually superior to claim they figured it out in the first few minutes, I think they are all full of BS! I think most people didn't like it because they didn't see the end coming & still can't figure out what they just saw.
If you liked The Sixth Sense, go see this movie. If you didn't, stay home.

Honestly why would people expect it to be an horror movie! If you saw the preview then you should know what to expect. Awesome MOVIE. HANDS DOW PERFORMANCE and Visual Story telling. Couldnt even tell that it was more then 2 hours! Thats what I call QUALITY MOVIE! So worth it! I am not a fan of thrillers or Decaprio but it was a very interesting movie!! A+++++ Total treat!

The movie wasn't bad by any means. I don't feel like I wasted my money seeing it in the theatre (not a habit I often make). But I wouldn't have lost much waiting for it to come out on DVD.
I guess I have just come to expect more from both Scorsese and DiCaprio. The writing was fine, not great. There seemed to be plot holes and inconsistent details throughout (though I'd like to watch it a second time to watch for more legitimacy in the plot, I don't think I could sit through another 2+ hours of it).
All in all, a pretty good concept for a movie, but less than perfectly executed.

Scorsese put forth a deep, multi-layered suspensful story here. Some people will say "Aw, i figured it out half way through". Well congrats. You have seen a thousand movies and are a semi-intelligent film. If you can't watch "Sixth Sense" or "Usual Suspectss" more than once, stay away. But if you love classical filmmaking, please revel in this rich tapestry of Marty touching on a Lynchian/Gondryesque film. Amazing performances, a solid cast, and accurate accents all collaborate to deliver this strong release. Thelma's editing really stands out from the first frame. it is the true essence of the film in the disjointed access it allows you. See it.

I went in expecting a horror and got it in sorts. It's mainly thriller and you keep wondering what the hell is going on. By the last few moments everything comes to light and you wish it hadn't. At least that was my reaction. Extremely sad movie, great storyline and intriguing. Would definitely recommend.

I went into this movie without reading the book. My girlfriend read the book. The movie does a great job in creating a shining exterior fasade that hides deep dark secrets the further the story ventures. For any of you that play games, the atmoshpere is very Rapture/Arkham Asylum like. However, the end left my girlfriend and I arguing over the outcome and what it meant. I'm probably wrong though.

Cinema mind trickery at its best. The execution of this film is phenomenal. The acting is topped by an always impressive Leonardo DiCaprio, reliable and understated Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley at his creepy best. The scene with Patricia Clarkson will have you wishing her an Oscar for the rest of the week. The methodical slow pace for the movie works eerily perfect. The movie won't quit on you even after you are gone from the theatre. You will be up for nights second guessing yourself and the movie. It gets you thinking, and hard. It's cinema mind trickery at its best.

The acting was great, the visuals were great. The plot line became predictable and the movie moved fairly slowly.
For those of you that think this is a horror film, its not scary at all. Its a mind twister, of which, if you have any intelligence whatsoever you will have figured out where it was headed early on in the movie.
It had potential, but the ending was very disappointing, had they taken it in another direction, i might have given it a higher rating.

Best summed up as an ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE MIND-FREAK! From start to finish this movie is masterfully casted, hauntingly crafted & brilliantly acted. I fully expect several Oscars to come out of this; it's a definite "MUST SEE"!

Visually this movie was fantastic, great angles and color. The dream/hallucination sequences were visual triumphs, truly gorgeous.
The story was tired and predictable, the acting was stilted and weak and the directing was uncharacteristic of Scorsese.
Wait for it to be on Blu-Ray and turn the sound off.

The movie was very captivating. It made me very uneasy from the onset, which is a compliment. Each scene seemed to be constructed to divert the audience into thinking the obvious outcome, but then left me with doubt. The acting was excellent.
The only minor flaw, was that I felt that this concept, a person suffering from mental illness lived in a world of his own making, has been used before in movies. Such as the movie with John Cusack.
I think great movies make you talk about them days after, and this movie achieved this with me.

This is an excellent period piece. Everything about this movie works to a 'T'. It is not for children under 21. Do not take kids to this movie and don't complain about the movie if you took a child to an R rated film. Very serious, reall material that is shocking and hard to look at but 100% true. It's not a horror film. See The Wolfman if you want a horror film. It is a very dark, disturbing film I recomend with caution. Graphic gore and susupence but only certain adults will grasp the storyline/history.

Very disappointed in Martin Scorcese...acting was great by everyone. The story way too convoluted and not in a good way. Too long in some spots...suspense fell flat on it's face. If you want to get technical...what was with all the beginner green screen action??? The music, oh come on...didn't fit, was too loud in spots, etc. Poor adaption, but then again was the book that great? The trailer people need to get huge applause, they made the movie out to be what it should have been. Love ya Leo, but not the movie...

Although I had figured the major plot twist from the trailers months ago, I still went into this movie expecting a decent picture. Sadly, it dragged on, thus turning it into a confusing mess. It wasn't that I didn't "get" the picture...it was that some parts were carried out for so long that I began to get bored and think of what was coming next.
The acting was good. DiCaprio plays a believable character, and I kept asking myself if Ben Kingsley was a good guy or not throughtout the picture. Max Von Sydow's character was one you didn't want to trust, as usual.
Overall, I was disappointed. Would rate 2.5 stars.

We went with a group of 6, all ages from 25 to 55. We were all riveted, but in a disturbing way. The movie turned dark to the point of EXTEMELY depressing. The audience sat in their seats, like us shocked, depressed, and wanting to talk about it. We needed a little healing. Maybe it's because we have kids...but it was way to depressing to let go of quickly. Several of us had bad dreams the next night, and we had to discuss it the next day just to find a way to let it go. I wish I hadn't seen it. And even my mid 25 year old kids, very open-minded, to the extreme for todays society, felt the same. The last 30 seconds redeemed it a bit, nice little twist, but it couldn't erase the earlier images and emotions it created.

This certainly doesn't go into my favorites list but it was a well done movie with the BIG surprise at the end. Left us with lots to think about. I loved Lehane's book and movie, Mystic River and also Gone Baby, Gone (which was so bad but so good I saw it twice!)
I'll bet the book was better than this movie - maybe not so "crazy"? I don't know that I would recommend the movie as it is pretty dark and many people don't care for that. I'd say, "Go to be entertained but don't plan to enjoy yourself!"
