The movie kept you thinking. Is this situation real, is he being setup by the government or is he reality in need of there help. The events and characters were woven together to keep you unsure of what is truly happening.

This movie did not live up to its billings. If you were looking for a thriller that kept you on the edge of your seat this wasn't the movie to do it. The ending was somewhat predictable and the pace of the story made my fiance fall asleep at times. We were both dissapointed.

Great acting and storyline! The movie is somewhat predictable to a point...but the twist at the end is great. Definately NOT a movie for kids to see! I would have given it five stars, but I thought the movie was too long. If you really get in to this type of movie, you will love it.

this movie was long. it was slow. and at times, predictable. the predictable part didn't bother me because it is a great story. however, this movie lacks excitement and suspense and the edge of your seat make you jump scenes i was most looking forward to. it is definitely a mystery/drama when i was expecting thriller/suspense. that was a huge bummer! the acting was fine i just got tired of the same old very slow drawn out scenes between leo and other members of the cast. this movie definitely would have rocked out had scorsese decided to go the thriller route, but i guess he kept to the book and a great book it was. still, not worth $10 but rent it when it comes out!

This is a good movie if you can get past wanting to say, "Oh, I figured that out 5 minutes into the movie" Maybe not a stunningly original film, but still a good film nonetheless.
I felt the acting was excellent and the film was beautifully composed; the dream sequences in particular were suspenseful and eerie to watch. The carefully tended grounds of the main hospital contrast with minds of the patients and the decaying rust filled interior of the maximum security ward, an abandoned fort from the civil war, just like thel fantasies created by the patients in order to hide themselves from an ugly reality they cannot accept.
Is it better to live a monster or die a good man? Ponder that as you drive home from the film.

What a waste of my $25 in Lux Level. This is the type of movie you rent at home. I am not saying it was bad am I am not saying it was good. Just not for me. It had a good twist and the actors were good. I just found the movie to be very gray-dull and the story line streched out too long. I left feeling sad and depressed. Just rent it at home and you be the judge...

This was a really good mystery/suspense movie. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Scorsese movies or looking to just go to the movies for a night out. You won't be disappointed. The plot was a little predictable but it was still a great story.

What a waste of fine cinematography, top-notch acting and great source material.
1. The music telegraphs everything. It is truly nothing short of comical.
2. I figured out where the movie was headed within the first 5 minutes. The remaining 213 minutes, therefore, inched along at a snails pace. This was a colossal error for Scorsese: even if it took 60 minutes to figure it out, you are still left with over an hour of events that don't matter, where instead of surprise and shock, the conclusion is reached with a resounding "So what? I figured that out an hour ago."

The movie immediately pulled me in. The mood and setting foretold what was to be expected during the entire film. Acting excellent, but flashbacks and misdirected visions made the movie somewhat confusing at first. I had not read the book, but about one-third of the way through, I suspected how the story might end. Great use of setting and characterization. The film did seem to drag in places, even though the majority of it was intense. This is a dark movie with a disturbing theme. Although intriguing at times, I left the theater with a cloud over my head and a sense of helplessness.

This movie is long, and it starts out very slow. But in the end its worth it, Shutter Island was very good psychological drama, definitely steers you one way just to twist you another in the end. All in all 4 stars, would be a 5 if it wasn't so long.

had an ending I did not see coming! Leo was great! I thought it was to be a scary movie but i as pure mystery with so many interesting characters. Leo is not a kid anymore and proves it with this performance. I loved thismovie because it kept me guessing until the end.

Its kind of like taking your sister to the prom, it is what it is and its not going to get any better. We figured out the twist within the first 45 minutes, actually we were so disappointed my wife told me she wished we would have stayed home and watched curling!

I did figure the movie out when DiCaprio found the 1st note, (and quite honestly the flashbacks were a dead giveaway) however the movie did keep my attention and there are a few scenes in the movie that made me think well maybe i'm wrong but when Dicaprio and "Chuck" found their way to the meeting and discovered that there were 67 patients that confirmed my conclusion. It was good but not worth the hype-wait for the rental!

This is an excellent movie. Very thouight provoking, very creepy, one you'll think about. Total twist at the end even a good guesser wouldn't be able to see coming.

A film with little to recommend it. Chintzy cinematography (fake "water" surrounding the "ferry" in the opening scene. Failed attempt by DiCaprio to approximate a "Boston" accent. Dialogue uniformly stilted, e.g. Ruffalo and DiCaprio take shelter in an above-ground crypt during a storm and the former questions the latter about his war-time experiences as if he was commenting on the weather. Ditto the exchange between Clarkson and DiCaprio in the cave. The contrast between ghoulish special effects and the gritty realism of the story was clumsy and amateurish. I expect better of Scorcese.

The film was very good, though predictable. It was what came before I would like to touch on though I doubt anyone cares. I rarely attend films at the theatre anymore because of the unnecessarily LOUD noise level--the gratuitous sound levels abd the dozens of COMMERCIALS I am obliged to watch even though I have PAID to see the film. It is a rude imposition---if you cannot get the attention of the audience without hurting their ears--then you need to re-think what you are offering.

To be honest I predicted the ending of the movie before we sat down, however even if you know what happens the movies keeps you on the edge of your seat and guessing the entire time. I may go to see it again tonight and I absolutely recommend that you see this movie!!!

This "thriller" has finally brought back the feeling of the old "thrillers" from yesteryear. The twists and turns throughout this film were at times, hard for your modern thinking to wrap your head around, but as the film unfolds, it becomes abundantly clear that you are witnessing something truly magnificent in it's ability to keep you wrapped in it's magic. A must see for those who grew up with "The Birds", "Carrie", "The Exorcist", "North By Northwest" and yes, dare I say, "The Omen". Controversial, yes. Imaginative, yes. Horrifying, yes. Because I believe that any one of us could be put in this position in different ways, of course, throughout our own lives. A truly new work of a "Thrill Ride"...5 stars.

I liked the movie. My other family members didn't. You definitely have to think while watching it. You probably need to see it twice to really understand it. There was a little violence and language. It was very similar to A Beautiful Mind. It's more of a mystery.

This movie did not live up to all the hype. As being known as always over detailing movies and noticing the little things from others when viewing a movie. Shutter Island really put me to sleep. I couldn't follow the movie the first 3/4 of it and had a hard time understanding what was going on. The violence and scenes from the war DiCaprio was in were gruesome. I almost got up and walked out when all the guards at the German camps were lined up and shot. As I understand the meaning now of it, it could have been portrayed in another way. Younger children definitely are not advised to see it as they won't even understand the movie anyways.
