I thought this movie was ok. The characters who were part animal/part human looked actually pretty good. Like most kids books made into movies, I felt Hollywood tried to push the limits on the sexual appeal. In the book these kids were 12 years old. The casino scene was a bit overboard. This is a kids book/movie, can Hollywood keep it that way? Also, the story line is always different. Some important characters in the book were left out. What about the Oracle, Clarisse, Ares and Kronos the Titan? Then what was with Persephone? She had nothing to do with Percy getting the bolt. Some of it was overacted but my 12 year old daughter who loves the Percy Jackson books thought the movie was great. I would still bring her to see it again.

Like the later Harry Potter films, this film was mostly three teenagers running from one FX scene to the next. The plot didn't make scene. though if you have read the book that won't matter much. There was no character development and while the main female character in the book was interesting, in this film she was tough acting for the first 15 seconds and then she became standard issue girl who needed to be rescued.
The special effects were sometimes really neat.
My ten year old who loves the book thought the movie was pretty good.

I have read all 5 PJ&O books and was SO dissapointed by this film. This director left out many main charatcers (Mr. D, the Oracle, and Clarisse to name just a few) and the main story line that continues throughout the series - which totally blew my mind! No mention of Kronos at all, other than the fact that his children cut him up into little pieces and threw him into Tartarus. Chris Columbus did a great job with bringing HP from book to screen, but did a very poor job with this one. Just read the books, they are so much better, but if you do choose to see this movie, I promise you will want your money back!

"Percy Jackson" isn't a great movie, but it's a good one, offering out kernels of Greek mythology like so many Disney Channel references. For the most part, it works. And Logan Lerman is extremely likable as he goes from high-school nobody to world-saving demigod hero. At what was a very young age, I found him to be a compelling character on the brilliant WB series "Jack and Bobby"(which somehow was cancelled). This film was seen by default, as the one I sought had passed. I was surprised to find I greatly enjoyed the movie even sitting amongst a myriad of oft overly excited teens.

My husband (who didn't read the books), my 11 yr old and 13 yr old daughters and I (who did read them) all enjoyed the movie, that was just exciting enough to hold a grown man's attention and fantastical enough (but not too scary) to interest the younger ladies. It's a terrific lesson in Greek mythology -- who can forget the relationships of the siblings and rivals and enemies now?! I liked the messages about family, love and sacrifice, friendship and loyalty. Good entertainment.

If you read the series, you know the movie ventured far from the story line. Entire scenes and characters were left out. The whole plot of the quest was rewritten to fit the big screen. The movie was okay for ages 10+, but smaller kids might find some scenes scary. There is a surprise ending during the credits that will make them jump. The special effects were great and it was entertaining, but to say it will be the next Harry Potter blockbuster is a stretch. We enjoy Rick Riordan's books, but hope he has more involvement if they choose to make any sequels. Great books for ages 9-15 though!

I saw this movie with two 8 yr old boys, one of whom and I had read the book first. The boys enjoyed it. It was definitely not as good as the book, which itself is a far cry from the HP series. If you have no background in the greek gods, I'm not sure how much sense this movie will make to you. Effects were ok.

After my 3 kids read the books and wanted to see the movie, I decided to read Lightning Thief myself. I understand that the movie cannot put everything in it that the book has, but I was very disappointed in the movie. I found Percy Jackson & the Olympians to be an "Okay" movie at best. I did not read the book, so I don't know how closely the movie followed it. This movie seemed to have similarities to Harry Potter (a boy not knowing about his past until faced with it), but I didn't think it was nearly as good as Harry Potter! This movie was predictable, and definitely not one I would take young children to see (i.e. monsters, sexual innuendo, etc.). More suited for teenagers. Would not see it again."

I REALLY think this is a very good movie. More so for the middle school to young high school age. This is a kind of movie that would be an excellent school field trip. This movie is not only action but it puts history and names in a perspective to where a middle school child would recognize the name and find out what they accomplished. I just think it is a very good movie.

This is an example of a wasted opportunity. So many movies are predictable. Rarely is there a novel idea for a story. This was one example of a great idea for a novel story. Sorry I spent the money. The movie for movie's sake is fine but having read the books we were sorely dissappointed that the parts of the book that are so special were glossed over in the movie. Took 7 children to see this(11yr olds), one has a learning disability and identified with Percy; totally glossed over that major part in the movie. By omitting characters, it just becomes a fright fest rather than an enduring childrens tale of good vs. evil. We left feeling dissappointed. Very surprised the author permitted his story to be cut-up this way.

If you're a fan of the books don't even bother seeing this movie. I can't even explain how little actually related to the book. Ares and Dionysus aren't even in the movie. The characters of Poseidon and Zeus' attitudes towards percy and the truce between the big 3 are all changed... Sigh. I would love to see a movie of the actual book...

the movie was amazing, graphics were amazing, but it was nothing like the book. The kids were about 7 years older in the book, themes were correspondingly older--don't take your younger kids!!! (under than 9) the monsters were terrifying! Great friendship, lots of action.

The Lighning Thief was very entertaining and those who haven't read the book should follow the story line with no trouble at all. The special effects were well done. However, the entire plot was different, vital characters were missing and/or changed dramatically and new scenes were invented. So, all in all, I'd recommend The Lightning Thief to anyone who hasn't read the book. Those of us who did read it, spent a good part of the movie waitng for things to get back on track, and they never did.

My son enjoyed the movie alot even though it did not follow the book as much as we had hoped. I thought that they left out too many main characters and changed the plot too much. We had both read the books, and the story lines and development of the characters was completely missing the point. Like other reviewers, I don't know how they will continue the story without completely rewriting their own "movie version" of this wonderful book. The basis of Kronos coming back to power was completely missing and many of the monsters that we were looking forward to seeing were completely omitted. The question about whether or not the gods really cared about their offspring was not included. I had to make my son finish watching the movie because about halfway through, he was ready to leave. It was a real disappointment. I am suprised that the author would have allowed the basis of the story to be so completely mistrued.

I took my daughter(11yrs)to see this movie and She loved it. She is reading the series, and although I am not, It was still easy for me to get into it. According to my daughter they did leave out some action and info from the book but all in all, we loved it!!

This movie had something for everyone in the family. If you like the Harry Potter magical good vs. evil story line, you'll like this series. It does deviate from the book, but that is to be expected. The special effects are great, the story moves quickly and my son who has read all of the books too many times to count (and has the main characters' autographs) thought most of the changes were "totally fine."

I understand setting up the background but putting a teenager in the light that it is okay to be disrespectful to his step father (pig or not) in such a blatant way went overboard. We need better examples of respect for authority. it could have been handled better.
The rest of the movie picked up the pace and was very enjoyable. Good action sequences.

My twelve year old thoroughly enjoyed the movie and gave me detailed information on how the screenplay was different than the novels. He enjoyed the movie thoroughly and would rate it as excellent. I thought it was a well produced piece of tween fantasy with decent screenplay. Unless your kid is familiar with the books and/or Greek myths it will function as a slightly confusing action movie with good special effects.

All around a good movie, great special effects, but there were some pieces from the book that were missing. For example, how did Luke get the lightening bolt in the first place? Just a few minutes at the beginning of the movie would have answered this. I know the director/screenwriters do this to make the story line more consistent, however those who know and have read the book will see some glaring omissions.
