Changing the appearance of characters or minor plot lines would not have bothered me. But not only was it not the same story, it was a really really bad story with a braindead plot. I read the book before my daughter and her friends did and we were all miserable after seeing it. Our hopes were completely dashed. The names of the characters were the same but that was all. It was a bad movie made with the character names and general setting of the book. I wouldn't have liked it even if I hadn't read the book.

I really enjoyed the movie, but not because it was a great representation of the books. Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) MADE that movie! His comic timing was awesome and the special effects and storyline (even if it was a crayon-drawing of what Rick Riordan wrote) were engaging. I was sad to see that some key characters from the novels were missing. It will be VERY difficult to weave them in if they plan on doing any sequels. The biggest bummer: the prophecy wasn't mentioned (and honestly, I was looking forward to a CGI Oracle!) which is the whole purpose of the series. I was also kind of bummed that they made the characters older on screen than the books. In my opinion, it minimizes the struggles that Percy in the book had to go through.

If I could have given this movie no stars I would have, I read all the books in the series and loved them, so I was very excited about the idea of the movie. I understand that movies will never meet up to the books that inspired them but it seems to me that the screenwriters didn't even try. Leaving out key plot points and adding unnecessary scenes to I guess add something to the movie. I would tell people who are on the fence about seeing it, to save your 10 dollars and buy the book it is way better.

I did not read the series, but my daughter and her friends did, so I took them to the midnight showing. The movie reminded me a lot of Harry Potter - the same old teen angst/save the world stuff. It was ok, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again. The girls, however, were infuriated. They ranted about how extremely important characters were omitted and the plot line was completely changed. They said they fully understand that movies are never like the book, but they said that at least most movies manage to keep the same basic plot line. I guess we will not be buying this one on DVD.

I think that first off, I should say that I read this series and absolutely loved it. That being said, I also thoroughly enjoyed the movie as well. It was fill with the same amount of comedy, and action as the book, and even though the details were changed there was still the same underlying themes. I think it was a job well done.

My son loves this series so I was crazy enough to take him to the midnight showing. It was a really good movie. For being there so late I was afraid I would fall asleep but it kept my interest the entire time. May even go back and read the books now.

If I hadn't read the books, I'd think it was a decent movie. Not quite as good as Harry Potter but entertaining. However, as a book reader, I was a bit disappointed.I understand that you can't get exactly the way the book goes but a lot of key things were missing aside from age & looks. Dionysus, Ares nor Clarisse were in this movie whom were pretty important.Also missing: the fact that Hades, Zeus & Poseidon swore off having kids because of the prophecy of a god's offspring taking over Mt Olympus against the gods. That is a major detail for the series overall. If you're a not a book reader, you'd enjoy the movie. Otherwise, you'll have a good chuckle then tear it apart. Entertaining, but Rick & Joe should have written this a bit better.

We took our boys to the Midnight showing last night...My eldest and I have read the books, hubby and youngest have not... The movie was good....It had some changes, but most movies do when based on a book..so if you go into the movie NOT expecting play by play of the book you will enjoy it!!!! It had a ton of action, and some pretty cool special effects...I thought overall it covered the book decently- but more importantly the movie made my husband and youngest son WANT to read the books which was a bonus to a great family movie!!!!

When I read the interviews with Chris Columbus before seeing the movie it prepared me for changes that were being made from the book. What I didn't expect was that he would ignore most of the book. None of the charm of the books was even attempted!!! Major characters were left out of the story completely and plot lines were changed.
If you have never read the books it will probably be an entertaining movie experience. If you are a big fan of the books you'll be disappointed. With Harry Potter the attempt to follow the book was evident.

Haven't read any of the books but my daughter has and of course it would be missing a few moments, you can't include it all. It kept me captivated and was action packed. Ok, first off, there will be some changes, but I dont call a character looking different a major change. wow, they could never ever compete with a book like the lightning theif, except if they made a like 5 hour movie, with thr ight details, then i would rate it a 3 star. I am a percy Jackson FANATIC, so i should know. Annabeth-so wrong! She has dead straight brown hair with ungray eyes in the movie, but in the book has blond hair and gray eyes in the book. just wow. i don't even think the director even read the book. it's really just so sad that they could call it the lightning thief. they will leave out some extremely crucial details. also, percy looks like he's at least 14, when he should be in the sixth grade and 12. Overall VERY DISAPOINTING!!!!!!!

I read all of the books and a I was so excited when i saw the trailer in theaters. I litterly stood up and screamed "OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG" I got yelled at and asked to leave the theater. But still I am upset. It is PG! Now little kids will think they know everything about it when they dont. That is going to be really annoying. Now its becoming a kids movie and its going to be the next Finding Nemo. This is going to be bad. Im siked but O hope kids wil not think they know everythign about it. And they wont make sticker books for the lightning theif, coloring books, and a bunch of other junk. Oh Well...

Why are the characters in the movies never resembling those in the book? I realize diversity is important, but come on. Also the girl is supposed to be blonde. Do the casting people not realize most people that will see this movie actually read the book? I have nothing against black actors, but if the character is supposed to be white with red hair then find someone who matches the description.

i think the movie looks beast. but time to face facts, the first book started when percy finished his 6th grade year. This shows him already in high school, Annabeth isn't a blond(someone already pointed it out) Grover was a half-goat not a demigod
