This is the first time my daughter has EVER buried her head in a book. She loved them so much that she took about a month to go through the entire series! We met a bunch of her friends there and while I have not read the book they all made comments of how it really doesn't follow the book well and they had really hoped and expected it to. Still a good movie and worth seeing....just a little disappointed.

It was a fun, action movie for the pre-teen, young teen set. As far as for younger kids...there was a lot of violence and way too many sexual themes. The star of the book was about 12 years old...they made Percy older in the movie so that they could go with the love interests and sexual themes (satyr). I also didn't like the drug theme in Las Vegas. Otherwise, an entertaining movie.

The movie was very entertaining, despite the long winded title. The CGI was top notch, I had thought the Narnia Centaurs were good until I saw these guys! All the mythical creatures were grade A+! Action was good, story flowed, humor was directed toward several levels. I thoroughly enjoyed this, though I must say the 6 year old a couple of seats down did get scared at a few points.

Four of the six of us who saw the movie read the book. Had it been called something else, we all agree it was a great movie for the teen set. Language (did not use the f word), heavy sexual innuendo, violence, but a great story, great special effects, and fun. The loud argument from 3 middle schoolers in the car on the way home was how farit departed from the book and why they took elements from all books, made Percy older, and eliminated some of the chance for seqels. IT really had only a half connection to the book: maybe a demi-book film!

I haven't read the book yet, but my kids had. We all thoroughly enjoyed the movie - lots of action, interesting story. This will be one for the home collection. I am intrigued and will read the books now too.
Commenting on some of the other reviews - I don't think people should have expectations coming into a movie once they've read a book - there's no reason to be convinced that the movie SHOULD exactly follow the book. No promises....

Bad movie experience. Poor script, badly cast, lacking in credibility. My kids had read the book and felt it compared very poorly. Although the director did a good job with J.K Rowling, here he fails abysmally. The two main characters look and act like they have just come from High School Musical - not their fault: they were miscast, given a poor script and terrible direction.
This movie is a waste of space in the Netflix queue let alone spending $40 for a family of four at the box office.

This was a fun, larger than life fantasy with a great cast and excellent acting. There are parts that could be construed as frightening by a young child, and maybe even some adults. I took my 5th grade class to see this yesterday. We had read the book together. We all agreed it was a good movie, but lots of differences. You could see the book in the movie, but not as much as we would have liked. Overall, we would go see it again. LOVE the books and as is usually the case, books are better than the movie.

If you're a die-hard PJ fan, then you'll be deeply disappointed by how far the movie strays from the book series. Clearly, they wanted to make a movie that could stand on its own (i.e., make more money) with the non book readers. Add to this an obvious reference to taking drugs in the Lotus Casino and significant sexual overtones from Persephone to Grover -- what's up with that? -- and you have a film that makes the books look bad. Pity. We never thought the movie could or would replicate the books, but this film went to the point of taking license. Riordin's series that he wrote for his young son was turned into a teenage hormone romp. Our prediction: There will not be a sequel.

This movie was very loosely based upon the book series. My eldest son and I whom have both read the series, were a little disappointed to see a lack of storyline closer to the novels. Yet, the film was enjoyable and the re-creation of Olympus and the gods and goddesses were well done. My younger two children and my sons friend who have not read the books enjoyed the movie.

I agree with the other reviews - the creators could have referred to the book more and it still would have been a good movie. Blatantly changing scenes was not needed.
My family enjoyed the movie and the kids want to see it again, but I recommend reading the book after not before - that is what disappointed me.

If you are looking for good copy of the book please don't watch this movie. The adventure and special effects were superb but it was hard for me to enjoy because they kept changing the storyline. If you haven't read the book I recommend seeing the movie first then read the book so you are not disappointed. Even if you know the book and still want to go see it be prepared to be disappointed.

My son and I had been waiting for this movie for a long time. At no time did I kid myself that it would match the book's plot completely, but we were both disappointed at how FAR from the book this movie landed. There were too many instances where they could have easily matched the book to make it more enjoyable... even such minor things as having the demigods wear orange Camp Half Blood T-shirts. That said, the movie itself - as a stand-alone - was definitely entertaining. Two hours did NOT seem like two hours. ...and that's important in the final anaylsis.

I enjoyed watching this movie with my kids. I usually use movie nights out with them to take a nap while they watch. But, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief really kept my attention. I enjoyed seeing my kiddos laughing and having an awesome time!

I read the book a couple of days before seeing the movie. It is based loosely (VERY LOOSELY) on the book but I don't care. I enjoyed the book and I enjoyed the movie so I ended up with a good book and a good movie. I'd rather have a movie well done touching on some aspects of a book than have a bad movie overall! Can't wait for the second movie!

As a huge fan of the books, my daughter was skeptical as to how the movie would play out. She was very pleased with the results. She wished Ares and Clarisse would have been in the movie, but otherwise thought the movie was an awesome adaptation of the book. Can't wait for more!
