The movie was sometimes funny but mostly serious. This is a great movie for kids ages 9-11 to experience what mature movies are like. I took a group of 7 kids to see this. Most were familiar with the book series. The kids generally enjoyed the movie but were dismayed that the principal characters had been turned into older teenagers. They also did not like that romance had been inserted. Some characters whom they liked were missing from the movie. Overall, though, they enjoyed the movie. The other adult in our group and I both thought it was rather hilariously bad with the exception of Uma Thurman as Medusa, Steve Coogan as Hades, and Catherine Keener as Percy's mother. The actor who played Percy Jackson, btw, seemed to have studied acting with Zac Efron -- 'nuff said!

This was an excellent movie. My son wanted to go see this movie ever since he found out it was being made. As an adult, I wasn't sure I was going to like it but found myself on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what will happen next. This was a great journey through Greek Mythology and I thought it was wonderful how this movie turned out for adults and kids. Those that weren't quite as happy with it, might have been those that read the book first and may have wanted all elements to be within the movie. Not always possible when you go from book to movie as most of us know. This movie has sparked interest in myself to brush up on my Greek Mythology and for my son to finish reading book two of Percy Jackson! This is Just AWESOME!

I know that is so typically the response when they make a movie from a book but in this case the book was WAY better. There are missing scenes, odd interactions, and odd pieces (like a 12 year old driving)...it just doesn't come out as smoothly or as interesting as the book. Entertaining but not adictive as a series.

My kids and I loved the movie. Although there were some differences with the book , these were easily overlooked. The casting was wonderful and the special effects were thrilling. We loved the movie and would recommend it to other families. We hope there will be a sequel!

Movie was OK. If you read the book you will be disappointed. They didn't follow the story line like they do for Harry Potter. No good character development. Logan was great but it all came a cross a bit choppy.

My children, 13, 11, and 6 have read all of the books, and are big Percy Jackson fans. We really enjoyed the movie, and found the special effects great! (A little too scarey for my 6 year old at times) I agree, it doesn't follow the book closely, but it's impossible to follow everything and fit it into two hours. the key elements of the story came through, and it set the stage for the next movie. My kids and I all agree, we can't wait for the next one!

I was amazed by how wrong this movie went. It was like "High School Musical" with combat scenes. I understand taking liberties with a story line in order to make a compelling movie of an appropriate length, but the makers of "The Lightning Thief" entirely omitted something core to the book: wit and irony. The movie is earnest, predictable, sophomoric, and boring. It exposes none of Percy's self-deprecating humor, or his the clever observations in the book's narratives. Save your money.

Great action for the whole family. Catches some of the nuances of Greek Mythology while having a fun story line. A few problems with continuity, shield always seems to be with them no matter how many times he drops it. Should be a great new multipicture series.

Movies are about being entertained and forgetting about the rigors of everyday life. If a movie pulls you out of reality and into the plot, then half the battle is won by the directors, producers etc. For their first major flm roles, I thought Logan Lerman (Percy) and Alexandra Daddario (Anna Beth) were wonderful. The special effects and battle scenes played out well. My only reason for lack of a higher score was that the plot needs a bit more pull and originality. While I did not read the book series, my two boys have and said that the book was better and they skipped many key events. Whatever the case - FUN FOR ALL!

If you want some really deep thinking Oscar winning classic... its not that. However, we all liked it - it was lots of fun, and pretty good. Ou son (age 10)who has read all the books told us that it had deviated a lot from the book, but it didn't spoil the experience for him and us. We had some laughs, it had some action - some interesting takes on Greek mythology - and now we want to see the Parthenon in Tennessee (much closer than Greece!) - How great for a road trip!

The movie is very loosely based on the book and that's being generous. Key characters in the book were completely removed from the movie. Camp Half Blood looked nothing like it was described in the book. I was impressed with how the Lotus Hotel and Casino was portrayed, that was cleverly done. Granted it is tough to accurately turn a great book into a great movie but it appeared that the writers completely gave up on even trying to follow the core plot line. I was highly disappointed in this movie.

It was a fun movie, if you had no expectations of it actually following the book. Because other than the names of the characters they changed everything. Why does Hollywood think they can rewrite a good story? It's never as good. I had taken my 10 year old daughter and her friends who have all read the books and was a little disturbed how they aged the movie for a little older audience. To be fare though it was a fun movie and had some cool special effects.

This film was just ok. The plot had holes we could have driven a Mac truck through. We assume it was missing key elements, as is the case with book adaptations. The effects were well done but not well enough to mask the glaring plot issues. It is a film well-aimed at the tween to teen category. Adults may not be so entertained.

I took my 5th grade daughter + 2 classsmates to the movie, all of us have read at least the first couple of books in the series. We really enjoyed it! Other reviewers seem to be irritated that it does not follow the book exactly.. however, you must remember that movies flow differently from books and allowances must be made to keep up the pace. Some characters are not included, but there is certainly room to introduce them in sequels (which we hope to see!). The special effects are outstanding. Younger kids might find the monsters too realistic, better to wait for the rental if you have little ones. As an adult, I found this movie much more interesting than certain OTHER juvenile-based series of late.

For a 2 hour movie, it was pretty thin. The plot was as linear as you would expect, except for a discontinuity in Percy's objective. No character development to speak of. Animation was nice, if not a bit grainy. Fine for U-10, but my 11-year-old and his buddy thought it was below average.

I thought they did a really good job with casting & the special effects were great - Grover & Chiron looked great & the Fury, Hydra etc. were pretty convincing as well. In my opinion they could have done a better job with the story line & kept more to the book. Alot of characters were left out & there were some holes if they're planning on making the sequels into movies. My husband & son were really disappointed. Bottom line: don't expect too much & you'll enjoy it; the movie is never as good as the book.

This Harry-Potter-meets-classic-Greek-Mythology hybrid definitely stands up as a fun and engaging adventure. It highly surpasses the later, weaker Potter films. Despite some lumbering construction flaws (poorly developed villain, awkward treatment of the mother character), Percy Jackson is imaginative, light, and visually brilliant. The young actor playing Percy has a confidence and vibrancy reminiscent of a (very) young John Travolta. And look for Uma Thurman in a delicious and campy cameo as Medusa!

I took my 3rd grade son and some of his friends who have all read the book, and many of them the series. They enjoyed the movie. It's a big fantasy, action film. Afterwards, they spent a long time discussing the differences between the book and the movie. Percy was older in the movie, than the book, they travel to different places, etc. Also, they pulled in events and characters from books 2 and 3 for the movie, so it seems likely there won't be a sequel if they've already spent their wealth. All in all, loosely based on the books it was a good movie. Then my son came home and started reading book 2 again!

The movie seemed to be one of those "inspired by a book" type of movies instead of a movie about a book. But please don't be disappointed if you were looking for it to exactly like the book. It is a movie that was good on its own but could have been great if it followed the action that the book provided. I will wait to see this one again when the DVD is released.

My daughter and I loved this movie...it was filled with action and adventure...loved the story line and didn't want it to end....i am 30 years old and this movie made me want to go out to Barnes and Noble to buy the books!!!! Loved It
