As someone who hasn't read the books (yet), this both whet my appetite and piqued my curiosity, and the story as a whole hung together well. The place the plot needed to go was pretty predictable, and the mythic references were comfortable (though they also make me want to re-read Greek myth). The effects were great at immersing the story elements and made each character feel as real as any other.

Enjoyed the movie overall, great special effects, lots of action. My 5-year old, to whom I've read all the books, loved it. But, they made a number of major changes from the books. The characters were older and some of the themes were more mature than they needed to be. Also, they left out some major plot elements that are integral to the larger plot (e.g., Luke's relationship with Annabeth, the prophecy). I'm not sure how they're going to work around them if they do make sequels. But, fun overall.

This is the perfect movie for families with middle school kids and up. My middle schooler has read the series and though some parts were different, the movie version was approved! There was enough action and humor to entertain my high schooler as well.

We were pleasantly surprised by "...Lightning Thief". We were, no doubt, aided by low expectations (caveat) and we never read the books. We were impressed by all of the special effects & CGI! The story, which is obviously directed towards teenagers and younger kiddos, moved right along. We never felt bored. Enjoyable characters were well-cast and all of the actors did splendid work. It takes a director with a deft touch to create a movie that satisfies a broad range of the movie-going public .... especially when the film is based on literature written for teenagers & younger! Director Chris Columbus succeeds in doing just that! While not a masterpiece "...Lightning Thief" is a solid, entertaining movie that most will enjoy!

I took my 10 year old daughter to see this - she enjoyed it and it wasn't nearly as bad as it might have been. The characters are pretty one-dimensional, but the pace is good and the music is fun. The female lead is at least smart and powerful, although the male lead still ends up defeating her and then rescuing her. I could really have done without the modern minstrel show, however, with the leading African American being half-animal and providing the comic relief. I did enjoy the epilogue, so stay through the beginning of the credits for that.

I did not read the books but took the nephews who did and they enjoyed it as did I, I gather some changes were made, but you could then have a 4 hour movie, if you closely follow a book. This movie was fun and the effect were nice. You also learned something as well.

My Granddaughter (10 years old) has read the first 3 books in the series and wanted to see this movie. She has read most of the Harry Potter series and seen the movies. This movie was a disaster! The only thing that was based on the books was the characters names and the idea of greek mythology. It didn't follow the book at all. One of the main characters wasn't included, and another's two distinct features weren't included. It was a horrible movie, and even if you haven't read the books, don't see it.

I loved the books, and this is not as good... but hardly any movie is able to pull that off. The action is fun and the storyline inventive but the script was short on character. My daughter (10) said, "Best movie ever!" The two hours flew by. A few scary scenes for my almost 7 year old, but he did fine. I'd recommend it for the whole family

I have never read the books for this movie but my daughter has she loved the movie and she loves the books. I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. I see a lot of people that have blogged here did not and I am sorry for them that they missed an opportunity to be entertained. At the end of the movie in the theater we were at, the audience applauded, so I guess it is safe to say that everyone I saw it with thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the theater was packed ! So kudos to the studio and newcomer Logan Lerman

Great movie!!! It is good to see a movie with such common but uniquely presented themes. All young people shouldsee this. The theatre was full of parents and their children. The children were laughing, cheering and interacting with the characters during the movie. After reading the whole book series, i was looking forward seeing the movie. I concluded that the movie is nothing like the book. The director did a poor job w/character and plot development. The movie had such potential, but missed the opporunity do something very special. As a result, this movie is nothing more that a poor man's Harry Potter.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

The movie was great for the family. There were a couple of scary scenes for young children (under age 8) but most of the content was really good. There were great action scenes along with a followable story line.

I bought this book series for my children as my daughter was reading The Lightening Thief for school. We loved the books. They kept my children enthralled and wanting more. We were pretty excited to see this movie and I am glad that we saw it. It differs quite a bit from the book and that was frustrating for them but the story and action kept them glued to the screen and I admit, me too. When Luke and Percy were fighting my daughter decided she couldn't wait any longer to go to the bathroom. That was the fastest bathroom trip of her life. So, this movie was worth the 40$ it took for our family to see it.
