Sugar uses an engaging lead character and the theme of baseball to lead the viewer into and through the worlds of the barrios of the Dominican Republic, the US midwest, NYC and most importantly the thrills and heartaches of the entry levels of major league baseball. At the end, one is left thinking about the importance and loss of community, the power of language to exclude and the sacrifices necessary to be a champion. Could be edited to be less slow but then it wouldn't capture the true rhythm of baseball.

Over all the movie did show the difficulties of people of other countries might have coming to America. I would have thought the elderly couple would have more knowledge and ability to speak Sugars language, since they made comments on how they had housed ball players from different countries. The fact that Sugar was given an opportunity to live his dream that very few people get and walked away could lead the American people to believe here is someone else that just gave up on their dream and we will have to take care of them.

... and the minor league factory/farms that funnel them into the Majors. ***SPOILER ALERT*** The film's problem is that Sugar's decision to leave baseball comes across as rash: he's injured, down on himself for the first time in his life, has no one to support him on the team and the girl who could show him some affection is unavailable because she's an Evangelical. At the end, the film wants us to see his working as a carpenter and only playing baseball on weekends as a wise choice. But Sugar is too potentially talented, and under too much pressure from his Dominican family, to not give baseball another try once he's got his head on straight.

I enjoyed the film. I found it interesting to see all these players being recruited and believeing that there is a really good chance for them in their sport but as they struggle -- there really isn't anyone there to help them thru it. But they do find a way to survive and help their families regardless.
