This is an astonishing, even thrilling film. My high school daughter and I saw the movie together; we've been down to help with the Katrina recovery and this film nails how articulate and appealing the people down in the 9th ward are, and how much they've been neglected by the government. It does this because the directors were smart enough, when the two "stars" approached them, to realize they were the movie. It's terrifying when the water's coming, appalling when no help is coming, and ultimately redemptive. What a story!

the producers jumped on this one because they knew it was a hot topic and a perfect opportunity to showcase their political views. Unfortunately, the movie would have been alot more poignant and powerful without those views.

Besides showing our government's terrible incompetence in dealing with New Orleans' disastrous hurricane--which we already half-knew, but not so graphically--this film introduces you to very poor people the average middle-class filmgoer would never meet. If she saw them coming, she would cross the street. Yet these people with their appalling English turn out to be decent, even heroic. In the end, you feel respect for and empathy with them.

Astonishingly immediate, and horrifyingly relevant. As we watched the movie, Hurricane Gustav was bearing down on New Orleans again, Louisiana's National Guard troops are still deployed in Iraq and the Republican party is about to convene in St. Paul to launch a bid for another term. Thank god for survivors with handcams. We came away almost disbelieving that this footage could ever have been shot.

So worth seeing to get an overview of what happened during Hurricane Katrina and yet I felt there was so much more to say ... it's a good primer on what happened - and didn't happen. it's powerful, shows the human spirit through it all. Makes you feel like you were in the house WITH these people.
People tried to do what was right - from inside and outside New Orleans- but proper help was denied at every turn by our government. That these same people are in office is INconceivable.
People of N.O. STILL need help. Poor people are still being denied their rights. If this opens up more privileged and all people's eyes, then it's done a huge service.

This is a great, important, powerful film. Please support it - take your friends and family. It's a testament to the character, will, and spirit of amazing people who have managed to survive in the face of nearly impossible odds - not only when Katrina hit, but all their lives. We need filmmakers to make more films like this - and we need this film to be shown in as many theaters across the country as possible. So awesome. It puts a fine point on the fact that Katrina was not just an event unto itself, it was a catalyst to show how our government continues to fear and ignore the poor. It's sad to think that had they been born in different circumstances, Kim and her crew could have been running FEMA instead of the clowns we had then--hell, the clowns we have now. Just saw this very moving doc. Incredible first-hand video and story of a couple surviving New Orleans in 2005. Excellent story telling. Go see it!! It's at the IFC Center in NYC. They're trying to get a grass roots distribution going. Look for it or arrange a screening in your city if interested. It's an important film.

Trouble the Water is a "must see." What shines above all else is the absolute value of each and every human being. Kimberly's spirit and courage are beautiful...many will think her unusual, but she is just one shining example of how people without money are just that -people without money - not without anything else. She is without pretense or apology, and as I watched Trouble the Water, I came to love her as a sister. New Orleans is truly a "tale of two cities," and we cannot afford to forget or abandon the residents who lost so much. How about those levies? Go see for yourself - they can't withstand another severe hurricane...We fought against apartheid in South Africa - well we've got similar issues still here in the U.S.

This documentary was breathtaking and will be an eye-opener to all citizens of the world about how the U.S. government regards poor communities. May it enrage us all to take action against that disregard and abuse. It was also an inspiring, moving story of resilience, community, and humanity in New Orleans when people needed each other and God more than ever. Kimberly and Scott Rivers are names I will never forget.
