For my birthday, my husband said he would go with me to see any movie I wanted and it was The Lovely Bones. Even HE enjoyed it! Stanley Tucci was absolutely fantastic playing the "psychopath next door." Having been born the same time as Susie and being 14 in 1973, I fully understood what she felt and the world she lived in. Peter Jackson did a good job portraying that era. I have not read the book but now both of us plan to do so.
A definite must see.

I was disappointed with this movie. Might have been that my expectations were so high beforehand I could only be disappointed, but ...
I'm not sure I knew what this movie wanted to be. It begins with a young girl experiencing her first brush with romance. This is then snatched away with her murder. We then see scenes of the inbetween afterlife intermingled with a suspense tale, with Suzy sometimes just an observer and sometimes a participant in the hunt. This mish-mash of moods leads to an uneven movie - it's hard to decide what to feel when.
The movie is certainly well made and well directed. I'd say it's worth a view, but don't set your expectations very high.

Nothng left to the imagination as the plot was explained right out of the gate. I guess the good part of the movie would be the message to young/old to be careful out there and never talk to strangers. But not what I was looking for in a movie for "date" night.

I thought it was beautifully made and very well-acted, especially by Saoirse Ronan. My gripe would be at the story level: I felt the main conflict between the victim and her murderer was not satisfyingly resolved. I don't always demand a Hollywood ending, but for a film about a dead girl, a little more feel-good would have been nice.

This book is really good and the movie didn't fall far behind. I, however, think that the "other world" scenes were boring and confusing. Other than that, this movie was great and was really entertaining. I would recommend it to other friends.

You'd think this would have been better. From producers to directors to actors this was a stacked deck. What happened? Really poor charachter development, loose ends and how the heck did he get the safe in the car by himself? By the end I was really complacent. I hadn't read the book and didn't like it. My wife read the book and felt like we wasted our time.

I didn't read the book, but I feel the movie conveyed the lack of closure that both the children, and parents of missing children, experience. The actors did a great job; the creepiness of the villain, the anguish of the family and the lost hopes of a young girl were clearly expressed. I expected the sappy in-between world to take up most of the movie, but it didn't, and what there was of it, was not over-done and played well into the rest of the story. They also captured the 70's right down to the father's "wallabees." I really don't understand the bad reviews. I would see it again.

I've read this book about six times and looked forward to the film. Unfortunately, I absolutely hated the movie. The fantasy sequences detracted from the film's message and plot so much that I turned to my date in the middle of it and said "I'm so sorry I took you to see this!" It wasn't at all what I expected, and I would not recommend it. The murder sequences were graphic and violent, and I had to turn my head away at more than one place.
I was shocked to see middle school and elementary school kids in the audience. I would NOT recommend that you let kids see this until you see it yourself and make an informed decision. I was disappointed that this was the filmmaker's vision of one of my favorite books.

Had not read the book, but hear the book is great. My 19you wanted to see it, so i went with her. I would not waste my money to see it again. She agreed with me. Susan Sarandons character was the best part, i loved her at the "grandmother" LOL! The rest of the movie was a bore pretty much. Moral of the story, don't go down into holes in the ground with creepy old guys. She was 14, she should have known better!

After seeing previews, I was excited about seeing this movie. The fantasy stuff filling about half of the movie was a killer for me! The very little suspense and inability to keep to a plot makes this movie a "don't waste your money". After seeing it, I wouldn't even suggest it as a rental!

Best book I have ever read. Love that the story was told by the victim after she is murdered. Did not know how they would translate this to the big screen. Although many details were left out of the movie which allowed it to be PG 13, my 13 yo granddaughter loved it! The story was told in a beautiful way and I think that some of the negative comments means that these people did not get the beautiful spiritual meaning of the movie. Actors did a great job!

I am not much of a movie goer, however I was drawn to this movie by the interviews I heard on NPR. It was misleading. I did not read the book but it was obvious that if I had it would have been easier to understand what was happening. It is difficult to create dream like states that look believable. Still I think it was worth watching.

I thought the visual effects were phenominal, but there were no transitions between scenes and random facts would be said and would have nothing to do what was going on. I had not read the book, but my friend had read the book. I had no idea what was going on because the scenes didn't flow and it didn't clerify a lot of things and it was incredibly random. It did not make sense and i had to constantly ask my friend about what everything meant because it did not tell you or even give you an idea. And not only was i disappointed, but my friend who read the book said it was about as good as "the happening". I was expecting it to be great especially with award nominations, but no, it left me with no feeling of any kind of satisfaction.

I wasn't expecting another Lord of the Rings but I couldn't get past the entire idea of a serial killer targeting a teenage girl.

The book was captivating, and so was the movie. Fans of the director should realize this is NOT Lord of the Rings, it's a heart breaking movie, there is little action. Don't go watch a movie just because you like the director's work in the past. The movie is fantastic though!

Well, I like Peter Jackson's action-packed, visually stunning flicks just as much as the next person. For the people who were let down, let me remind you that this is an adaptation of a book that is anything but action-packed. And the only room for real visual interest is in the "in between." As someone who read and enjoyed the book, I thought the film did do it justice. I really enjoyed it. Two thumbs up! If you liked the book, go see the movie. Expect there to be a few things left out, but I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you haven't read the book, I still recommend it. The story is captivating. Enjoy everyone!

The film is gut wrenching, brutal, yet surprisingly tender. Those hoping for a film with the bravado of The Lord of the Rings or King Kong will be disappointed. That is not to say the film is not visually stunning – Peter Jackson's imagining of the afterlife as envisioned by Alice Sebold is jaw-dropping and masterfully captures the essence of the novel . Maneuvering deftly between the heartbreaking reality of a family devastated by the murder of their daughter and the afterlife that she inhabits, the movie is a story about the losses that linger, and the ways that life goes on. Saoirse Ronan, as Susie, carries the film while breaking your heart. Highly recommended.

I love Peter Jackson. The Lord of the Rings trilogy are some of my absolute favorite films. King Kong is an incredible visual experience, and Heavenly Creatures is a heart-breaking. The Love Bones, however, is basically a mess with a nice affective ending.
I think a lot of the blame lies with the horribly simplistic and sentimental source material. It brought out the worst in PJ. Jackson's typical bravado and visual splendor is tremendously lacking. The first hour and half plods along at a crawl with only a couple nice visual touches. Overall, I still enjoyed it and it strives for levels greater than 99% of all major studio movies, but it is an incredibly disappointing effort from a typically brilliant filmmaker.

This movie is split between a very real world where the family of the murdered girl must live with her memory and a surreal, “in between” world where her spirit is stuck. This surreal world is full of absurd imagery that creates a cartoonish feeling to her plight. The real world scenes in the movie are excellent and full of intensely thrilling moments. Stanley Tucci plays a terrific serial killer. I would recommend this movie to fans of the book, but not to those who are anxious for a Peter Jackson follow-up to LOTR.
