When I was watching the movie, I realized if I hadn't read the book, the movie would seem pretty slow. The book is more gripping. I would definitely recommend reading the book first. The movie is pretty similar to the book, but the book was definitely better!

Although not as good as the book (what movie is?), it's well-done - not too graphic or focused on the murder, but the victims and life. I appreciated Susan Sarandon's humor by the way. It was a good movie for my 14-year old daughters birthday.

For such a rich subject so many opportunities were missed to expand and make interesting. Instead, too much time was spent on a world that was confusing and did not relate to the rest of the movie. Also, too long for the story, length of time did not further the story or the character development, it simply made it drag on.

The movie would have been 2x as long if all details from the book had been captured, but it definitely got the points across. Not overly creepy even though subject matter is. The character casting was great although I felt Susan Sarandon and Michael Imperioli are such great actors, their roles should have been expanded more. GOOD MOVIE but the book is better.

This was a visually stunning movie (cinematically speaking), but it began to drag in the middle, and became tedious at times.
Also, the character development for Susan Sarandon was (inexplicably) more in depth than either Mark Walberg or Rachel Weisz. Stanley Tucci was truly creepy and unlikable (meant to be a compliment) in his character, but Michael Imperioli all but disappeared in this film...(based on the movie promos, it looked like he would play a more significant part in this). The movie had the feel of "What Dreams May Come" and the ending of "Knowing".......not an Academy Award winner...This could have been a whole lot better with Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg at the helm....entertaining but not memorable...

Well done. Brought my 13 yo daughter and friend and through the real creepy parts almost left, but luckily it didn't go too far.
Special effects were great.
Projects good sense of family.

For anyone who read the book, the movie was true to the book. I thought it was very well done. The actors and actresses fit the characters well. I would see it again and will purchase the dvd as soon as it is released.

Sensitive handling of emotional, moving drama. After reading the novel, I was anxious to see the film, and it did not disappoint. Emotions run from anger and disgust, to fear and devastation, and bittersweet joy. Intense and enjoyable movie.

I was extremely excited that they made Sebold's book into a movie, but unfortunately left the theater disappointed. The movie itself was good. I enjoyed it to a point. I don't feel they developed the character of the mom enough. They left out details that would have made the story tie together better. They changed the way the main character viewed and interacted from Heaven. They could have done a better job on this screen play. I think people who read the book may find it lacking. Those who have not? Will really enjoy it.

I am glad I didn't listen to Hollywood critics who gave this movie a poor grade because it was "off" or "too colorful" as they may have said.
This was a great movie. Great enough for me to sit through without moving, great enough to elicit tears and laughter from everyone around me, great enough that I didn't grumble on the way home about how much it cost. Whether it was completely true to the novel didn't matter. The audience (sold out) erupted into cheers at the unexpected ending, and left with tears in their eyes and smiles on their lips.

This movie was different than the book in many ways--out of sequence, things left out and added in--but it was still an excellent movie. It was one of those rare movies where the movie was almost as good as the book, even with the changes. The scenes where Susie in in "the in-between" and heaven are breathtaking. I seriously can't believe so many people have rated this film so poorly.

I thought this movie was really amazing. It was very emotional and I was crying through the whole thing. I thought that it had some really great morals and it was very suspensful and very visually beautiful. The acting was amazing and really touching. All around really amazing movie.

I absolutely recommend this thriller of a movie! I loved it for several reasons: the casting was perfect, the acting was superb, the story is meaty, & really held my attention, & was quite unique (you'll have to see it for yourself to see what I'm talking about). It's really a quite mesmerizing movie, & goes by fast because you get so engrossed in the story. DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!!

Of course the book was better, a lot was rearranged and deleted to tell the story in a 2hr film. The acting was terrific, great directing. My family and I loved this film. I've read some bad reviews, but I believe they came from people that didn't understand the story and thought they were going in to see an action packed, murder mystery. That's not what the story is about. I would suggest reading the Synopsis if you don't have time to read the book before watching.

Sorry, but this movie could have been really good, but instead ended up really lame.
In think that when Peter Jackson lost all of that weight, a lot of his story telling ability went with it.
The movie spends entirely too much time with mudered teen's "in-between-life". Honestly, by the end of this movie I was wishing that the young actress would just go-way already, Enough!
Stanley Tucci is terrific as usual, I'm just sorry ole Peter would get beyond his need for special effects and by-God just make a good movie. At least my popcorn was good,,,,,,,,,

: The Lovely Bones= holy cow epic times infinity movie but huge tearjerker. Way to go Peter Jackson/cast! Also, watch out for Peter J. in a cameo appearance when Susie's dad develops the first roll of camera film at the pharmacy!! Stanley Tucci created a whole new level of evil. The special effects for the 'in between' are breathtaking! The actors/actresses in it just make it that much more better! I know that Peter J. skipped the actual r-pe scene (I read the book and was disappointed to hear this) but it wasn't needed in the movie to make someone understand what happened. Followed the book pretty good but, for me, forgot or didn't tell about two important details. Ah well! :D

This movie was disturbing from a mom's perspective. I have young daughters and it left me feeling a plethora of emotions from anger to sadness to vulnerability. My 14 year old daughter was with me (she had read the book and is the one that wanted to see the movie) and said that it would make her think about her surroundings and who was around. This movie is one of those movies that will stay with you for years; in your thoughts and throughout your life experiences. Definitely worth seeing!

Very deep movie that will hopefully stand out in young teenage ladies minds. As she said after she was dead, I was so stupid. I thought the projection of what the after life may be like was nice.
It was very clear to my husband and I what both Susan, in her after life and her family suffering through the lose, were going through.
If people are looking for a gory, sci-fi type movie, then this isn't it. Well done!

The lovely bones was a nice theatre experiance but to those who have read the book it was a HUGE let down. Peter jackson should have incorporated more of the book and less flashy stuff. The main point was left out.

To all the "inttelectuals" who always have to say "It wasn't the book," No it wasn't. It was a movie. I usually read the book if I'm impressed by the movie. So do many others. (And I read other than just the movies I see.) They made a movie called "The Bible". Did anyone go to that movie expecting the whole book? There is nothing more boring than anyone who is over 21 and expects any movie to be a carbon copy of the book. Closest thing we've had, recently, was The Road. But still, no, it wasn't "the book." The Book would be that rectangle thing with words prined on paper that we buy at a 'book'-store. A movie is a different thing. Thank you. This is a great movie.

This is most certainly a movie deep thinkers will appreciate. and if you aren't someone like me, you can at least appreciate the movie for it's emotional depth. The movie is greatly abstract, yes, but it does after all have to do with death. Of course, I'm not ruling out that the director was directing it abstractly as part of his general style, but death is not something that can be so easily defined. This movie is BEAUTIFUL not only for it's visual effects but it's portrayal of human nature and the reality of revenge, death and the general nature of human emotions.
