Let me start by saying that the film is visually stunning, as I had expected. The performances are all very strong as well. That being said, if you love the book, as I did, you may be disappointed by how condensed a lot of the story is... some of the most beautiful points in the story have been eliminated or altered to fit and some characters have been melded together.
That is not to say the movie is not well done, after all it would be hard to fit in every detail. If you've not read the book, you may find a seamless story here.

The movie was very long and dry. The fact that you knew who the killer was by watching the previews made the movie that much longer. Acting was ok, but cartoony in spots. I thought there would be a little more to it, but the fact is the ending was terrible and the movie itself made me want a refund. If you really want to see it wait until it comes out on DVD or Cable. The reason I gave it 2 stars is it had its moments where it looked like it was going to turnaround...but then it didnt.

I saw this movie with my 19 year old daughter . We both enjoyed the movie and were glad we were spared the violence with enough to let us know what happened. The movie was very thought provoking and we had a long discussion after. We both felt the movie was beautifully done by the director with such a heavy subject.

Maybe Peter Jackson should stick to story lines that don't require the finesse of dealing with human emotions--especially when it comes to focusing on one family's tragedy and subsequent recovery.
Apparently Jackson felt that if his audience had enough special effects to look at, nobody would remember what the real story is about: the murder of a little girl, her family's descent into grief and anger, the "benign indifference" of the universe and how evil is allowed to fluorish unchecked. Or almost unchecked.
The epic scale of "Lord of the Rings" was perfect for Jackson's style. Not so the suburban plains of Pennsylvania.

I read the book years ago and really wanted to see the movie since I enjoyed the book so much. I heard/read the reviews and it made me a little leery about seeing the movie. I'm glad I didn't listen to them and went and saw the movie on the big screen. I enjoyed it very much as did my 13 year daughter. It had alot of powerful messages for her too. If you enjoyed the book then you should enjoy the movie too.

I took my teenage duaghters to see this film, 14 and 12, as they had read the book. I felt the movie was well done, not having read the book myself. Parts of the film did drag a bit, and were reminiscent of "What Dreams May Come", but overall, the storytelling was good without dwelling too much on the details of the actual crime, and the cinematography was excellent. The scene with the broken bottle ships was stunning. I would, and have, recommended this film to friends and family.

I did NOT read the book and really didn't know what the movie was about but my friends really wanted to see it. I thought the acting was good and I liked the characters but the story didn't seem to know what it was about. Was it about the earthly world or the in-between because the stories didn't really enhance one another? Then it seemed like the story wanted to be about Susie and her dad, then the story was about Susie and her sister, then it was about Susie and the kiss she never got and then it was about Susie and her mom. It COULD have been all those things but the story wasn't told in such a way to support that and the result, instead of being complex and rich was just confused and hard to watch.

I'd give this movie a 6 on a 1-10 scale. The special effects were good, the story was shortened so much from the book, it really took from the film. Don't go in expecting to get the same experience you did in reading the book... won't happen. It would have been much better going to see it in December, rather than January. The end was different than in the book, but in a good way- my only kudos.

This movie was Silence of the Lambs meets the Care Bears. It tried to do way too much and so it became disjointed. It had the makings of a great psychological thriller but was ruined by the interjection to the supernatural world (which although it had cool graphics) was way too cheesy, long and what I would call pre-teen material. My husband and I expected something like Sixth Sense and wound up very disappointed. Just when you were getting into a good scene you would be swept away once again into the world of the care bears and left saying "what?!?" to yourself.

I have read the book and I do like the direction that the director took the movie. There was a lot of symbolism that worked well with the plot. Complaining about how long the movie was, come on people (I can’t believe anyone had two teenage girls running around screaming while your movie was playing as I did). I cried during this movie so that should say something about how emotionally charged it is, considering I rarely have any emotion like that during a movie.

This movie has fine acting, but is way too long, much too disjointed, and rambles on and on and on.
Love Stanley Tucci and all the other acters except for Susan Sarandon who was probably playing herself in real life (cigs and booze).

I loved this book but thought the movie was also really good. It's an incredibly difficult story to bring to the screen, but so are MOST stories! The acting was superb; the suspense was palpable and it was thoroughly entertaining. I did find it upsetting (I have young daughters) and found that some images really stuck with me. But both my husband and I really enjoyed it. It is too long (editing could've been tighter) but this is not a reason to miss this film. I definitely recommend it.

This was the biggest piece of s**t movie I have ever seen. So long and drawn out and never compelling. It hardly ever made sense and was just flat out stupid script wise. Nothing about this movie was good, unless you count the fact that it put me in and out of sleep, so I was very rested when I left.

In spite of some top notch acting and an intriguing plot and narrative "The Lovely Bones" is not a must-see film. The movie is too long, too loosely edited and often it does not connect us very well between the real-world goings-on and the "heaven's waiting room" scenes. Maybe that is intentional but it creates a disconnect which interferes with the movie's emotional motivations. I recommend it primarily for several imaginative scenes in the heaven-like dimension the young murdered soul is lingering in....and the acting by Wahlberg, Tucci, Sarandon & Ronan.

Enchanting, bittersweet, heart warming but cruel. The scenes were balanced. The emotion of the characters were exactly how you would imagine.
