The supporting cast is very funny, especially David Cross (Cain) and Oliver Platt (high priest) who are hilarious. The crude references are over the top though, and really not necessary (they must have just made the PG13 rating). Obviously the teenagers will think it's funny. I thought the movie ended badly, but with no strong plot I guess it's difficult to end well. If they come out with a Year Two, I will certainly be there to see it. Overall, very funny movie, just enjoy it for what it is. Will I rent it when it hits video? No. Will I buy it? No. Would I go see it again in the theater? No.

That was an awful movie. Forget the blasphemy - it wasn't blasphemous. It was just bad. I found myself trying and failing to laugh at the 'funny' parts, and I was the one of my friends that wanted to see it. It felt like it was missing A LOT of chemistry between the actors. Or maybe it was a funny trailer that they then had to fill with 1 hour and 38 minutes of story and comedy and they just fell short (they make trailers and THEN the movies, right? sarcasm!). It was just one of those movies where the second-hand embarrassment of watching such trash boils up in you and all you can think about is 'when will this be over?' With such talented actors, they must have known this was a bomb. Would they think this movie is funny? really?

i'm not sure why people take offense to things so quickly. this movie was so incredibly funny, and yes it made cracks on religion, but.... WHO CARES? if you're secure in your faith and your God, you'd be able to laugh about it.
i absolutely cannot wait until this movie comes out on dvd, i will be buying it. so few movies have you laughing literally from the first minute until the last minute, but this movie succeeded. my tummy actually hurt after i came out because i was laughing so much, but wow was it worth it.

My Review of Year One: Are you a christian who values your faith? Do you have morals that you don't want mocked? If you answered yes to these two questions, then AVOID Year One....like the plague... :) Our family walked out about 35 minutes into the movie. It was already rather crass, but then they were on the way to Sodom and Gomorrah. There is no telling what the depiction of Sodom and the rest of this christian-degrading movie brought to the screen. Hey! Didn't any Black people exist back then? No. I'm not talking about (Jack) Black. I mean people of color! Oh yeah! This is a Hollywood production.
Year One wasn't directed by Woody Allen but it had its funny moments. Minus Jack Black and it would have been a total dud.
There were good comical portrayals of biblical events and happenings which reminded me of Mel Brook's "History Of The World". The filmmakers simplified sacred lore and made grand stories seem ordinary and humorous.
However, there was too much male on male humor.
And it looked real low, low, low budget. Nice supporting cast. But this movie could have been way better!

I am appauled by this movie! I hated it. It was rude and degrating as a Christian. If they are going to use things from the Bible, be accuarte and not rude! I am ashamed to even have wanted to see it. I thought it was going to be funny. The movie was definitely funny at parts...mostly everything you see in the previews. It was slow, or seemed slow, the midnight time frame might have swayed my review a little. That being said, I liked it, but for $11 it could have waited for Blockbuster. MC is the same solid character he plays in every movie. JB delivers the same over-the-top performance we are all used to. I would consider this a funny rental, probably a lot better if you're boozed up.

I think this movie could have had a lot more fun with the 'stories from the Bible' idea -- like in Life of Brian, History of the World, Part 1 or even Wholly Moses. This one didn't work. What Bible stories are referenced? The tree of knowledge of good and evil, Cain and Abel, Abraham and Isaac, and a bit of Sodom and Gomorrah. As bad as this movie is, Hank Azaria's portrayal of Abraham made me laugh. Ex-Football player Matthew Willig does pretty well as Marlak This movie is definitely not as bad as Land of the Lost. I hope the rest of the films I've selected for this summer are better!
