After waiting ten years I at least expected the movie to be about aliens! What a disappointment, Scully convinces Mulder to trust the FBI in less than 2 minutes??? Only a very brief mention of their daughter? The story line was extremely poor, not about aliens and I felt like Chris Carter found religion sometime during the last ten years. It jumped from one thing to another, it was hard to follow. Mulder and Scully's relationship was hard to believe, emotionless, and dull. I kept waiting for the alien angle to the story, never happened.....and the ending was a huge let down.

Lets be clear. If you are a big X-Files fan that loved the non-Alien invasion stand-alone episodes as much as the integrated episodes, then you will love this movie as much as those shows.
Notwithstanding its movie theatre release, it offers no more than the stand-alone episodes on TV. But those were always 5 stars to me, and this is no different.
Actually, it is strange that they made this movie for the big screen. The Batman movie had appeal for people who were not necessarily Batman fans. If someone wasn't an X-Files fan to begin with, I can't see them liking this movie.
But for me, nothing but thanks to see another X-Files.

A very good stand-alone storyline for both fans and those who are new to the X-Files. The Mulder/Sculley chemistry was just as it was when the series ended. Plenty of great new characters, plus a suprise visit from a veteran near the end.

I've been a fan of this show since near the very beginning. Immersed in the unique plot, caught off-guard by outstanding character development, and some amazing writing/acting/music to boot. > I have to say, The X-Files: I want to believe I was disappointed in almost every respect. The plot? Empty, useless, filler all the way. Disjointed, and often painful to watch. It's as though someone took an otherwise throw-away script, slapped some well-known characters, and a few easily-spotted inside-jokes, and called it good. > Character development? Oh, we'll just settle for seeing Mulder and Scully cuddle in bed. Writing? Pfft, who needs something even approaching mediocre* writing?! (not Chris Carter apparently). > Acting? Hmm... Let's get a rapper, appeal to the young crowd! (he's good at standing around saying "I don't believe this" over and over -- so angsty!) -- Although I must say, the makeup people did a good job taming those awful eyebrows of Amanda Peet, and Gillian Anderson did have a few intense moments in this film where I remembered why I loved the soul she injects into the character of Dana Scully. > In all honesty, the only other even partially redeeming quality about this movie is the music. Me, my friend, and my relative all went to see this movie and we all walked out of the theater thinking the same thing, "Wow this movie sucked." My relative has watched the X-Files since they first came out with the series. And boy was he dissapointed! Also the movie is a little too graphic. It seems like the movie never picks up its pace, it starts out slow and it keeps going slow until the end of the movie. If you ask me I think that this movie is just one long episode with too much extra additions. I have respect for the actors but that movie was downright horrible! I would not recommend this anyone!

I saw this movie with my family and enjoyed it. My teenage daughter is a big fan, and we have seen every episode on DVD. My daughter particularly enjoyed it and says they made it just for her because she wanted a new X-Files movie. If you like the X-Files you will like this movie.

Having been a fan since season 1, I was really anticipating this release and was somewhat skeptical that it would be able to live up to the series (Pre- John Doggett, of course). This movie is a fitting movie for fans and newcomers alike. For fans, the relationship between Fox and Dana is taken further, and for newcomers, the plot is pretty intriguing as well. The story clearly focuses on the relationship between Fox and Dana, and the actual case takes somewhat of a backseat to that, but isn't that what we, as fans, had been wanting to happen, for years? Maybe not as action packed as some of the summer "blockbusters", but if you liked the show, you'll like the movie. If you like the paranormal, you should like the movie.

For those people who have been waiting diligently for six years this movie is like a breath of fresh air. The intensity of Scully and Mulder's relationship is back in full force and they could quite possibly be the greatest couple to come from the television screen. As for those viewers who have never seen The X-Files, it is still a worthwhile movie with an entertaining and often unexpected plot. It is not completely science fiction, in fact it almost reminds me of a slightly wacky and more character developing Law & Order episode. All in all it is a beautiful story to watch unveiled on the big screen and it left my heart aching for more brilliance that is Mulder and Scully.

Once again Chris Carter does not let us down. A well crafted script for both X-FILES lovers and new comers. I loved the craftmanship throughout the film. It was such a pleasure to watch a movie with true romance and not just cotton candy trash. The direction was beautifully mastered. My son is studying movie making/directing; I told him this is a must see! Thanks to the whole X-Files ensemble from all of your loyal fans. You never let us down! P.S. I thought the movie held true to the series although I would have like to see some kind of flashback or more storyline that bridges the gap between this movie and the series or last movie. The plot line was good, but a little too predictable, but that seems to be common in most movies these days.

I saw it last Thursday night and I have been thinking about it since them. This movie is true to the X files in that it poses difficult questions and trusts the viewers to be smart enough to come up with their own answers. In retrospect, it may just be too cerebral of a movie for a summer release. A shame since this is truly a wonderful gem of a movie.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was quite happy with the movie. The characters were true to those we remember from TV, and the story line was very much X Files. No, it wasn’t a high-action, edge of the seat thriller, but did it really need to be? That isn’t X Files. It would have been ridiculous otherwise. I enjoyed it but it was not as action packed as I expected it to be. More of a love story. I was hoping for a miracle and the Lone Gunman would show up, but it was great to see Skinner. I too, (don't ask me why) was hoping to see the mystery of aliens or the conspiracies that always played a part in the other episodes. Being a true X-fileophile I did find the movie overall good, AND yet a disappointment since it was so far from what I expected and wanted. Likes were - Scully's and Mulder's still intense professional/personal relationship; the appearance of old friend Skinner; the side story of Scully's young patient and her desire to "believe"; Father Joe. Dislikes were - no government conspiracies; no aliens. This made the movie just another psych murder story - not a X-files. Makes me hunger for another X-files project SOON hopefully to take us back to "The truth is out there!"

I absolutely loved this movie. It made me very happy. I think though that since it's more about the M/S relationship than it is about the actual x-file, the diehard fans will like it more than the general viewing public.
Also I miss Mulder and Scully in the FBI with their guns and flashlights and badges and trenchcoats. boo.

I loved this movie! Although some might, (and have) said that the plot is too complicated, or that it lack's the 'big movie feel' I can honestly say I was riveted. The story was engaging and the acting was superb.

I honestly WANTED to believe I was going to see a movie in the same calibre as the series and the 1st movie, both of which I enjoyed and continue to enjoy in re-runs. What I saw was a "here's-what's-going-on-with-Mulder-and_Scully's- relationship" and "here's them tracking what looks like a serial killer, with the help of a dying pedophilic priest, who appears to have psychic powers". X-Files? I think not. Had this been the 1st episode of the series, I would never have watched.

As a die-hard X-Phile, I wanted so much to believe... This movie was incredibly slow and had nothing to do with the supernatural...much less aliens or even government conspiracies. For me, the highlight was seeing Skinner, especially since all the interesting characters (ie. Krycek, the Lone Gunmen, the Smoking Man, etc...) are all dead. After waiting so many years for this movie, I left the theater rather depressed.

I loved IWTB, so much so that I returned to see it again this weekend (and was almost surprised to find that I enjoyed it even more the second time). Granted, I'm a longtime fan of The X-Files, but I saw the movie with non-Philes and casual fans and all of us enjoyed it.
This is not your typical summer movie with blow-em up shots and cheap laughs. It's a very thoughtful and thought-provoking thriller. It's dark (literally and metaphorically) but with an unmistakable undercurrent of hope and the power of belief. All of the primary characters in the film are struggling with questions of faith, from the heroes themselves to the psychic disgraced priest that leads them and the FBI in a desperate search for two missing women.
I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but suffice it to say that the film is an amazing character study of both Mulder and Scully - who they are, and who they are to each other, at this point in their lives. Six years after the series ended with the two of them effectively on the run from a death sentence imposed on Mulder, we meet up with them again to see that their lives have changed dramatically. Scully is a practicing physician; Mulder is essentially a recluse forced to live under the radar of the government and cut off from the tools and access he once used to search for the Truth. *** A mild spoiler followsin the next paragraph***.
Although the film wants to surprise you about 25 minutes in with the revelation that Mulder and Scully are now partners in a different sense (they're in a longterm relationship and have lived together in the same remote house for some time), I think it's important for people familiar with the show to go into the movie knowing that status. There's no more teasing about their sexual tension and attraction - no more near-kisses interrupted by bees. They finally figured out that they were in love with each other and did something about it (FYI, this didn't entirely happen offscreen but will be news to anyone who didn't follow the show during its final two seasons). They're not, however, without their problems and the film focuses immediately on what could drive them apart. They're at different places in their lives and a major theme of IWTB is how the two of them can reconcile what each of them wants and needs. It's moving and it's romantic, and strikes just the right balance between humor and angst. Bottom line, if you like Mulder and Scully, you'll love this movie.
The X-File at the center of the film has nothing to do with alien mythology and, viewed on its own terms, is probably not among the strongest standalone plots the 1013 crew have written. But there's more than adequate tension for a mystery-thriller and the movie is really elevated to something special by the performances of Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, and Billy Connelly (in a complicated role that should make us all pause to wonder whether even the most depraved person can strive for and achieve redemption).
I found myself thinking about the themes and ideas in IWTB long after I left the theater. As I said, the meaning of faith is a central question of the film: what does it mean to have faith in God? In another person? In a relationship? In the strength of your own beliefs? All of this gets explored in a very satisfying way. Utimately, the film is about Mulder and Scully moving forward together, taking risks, and being brave in a world where darkness will always try to shadow them.
Last but not least, for X-Files fans, there are plenty of subtle nods to elements and people who were important in the series. These characters have grown and changed but not so much that you won't find them familiar and endearing. Considering what the two lead characters went through and how much they suffered, I enjoyed seeing them finding some measure of peace in this film as they figure things out.
I'd see it again, and I'd recommend it to anyone who can appreciate a taut, twisty, and cerebral thriller with great arcs for two characters with whom almost everyone is familiar (at least in passing). Go check it out - and don't wait for the DVD or you'll miss some terrific cinematography and action sequences that play best on the big screen!!

As a devoted fan of the series, I was thrilled to hear of a new movie and drove my friends crazy with a count down to opening date. I took two friends who don't even know how to spell X-files and they enjoyed the movie, but I was left wanting more. I wish we could have had this movie a few years back and peeked into Mulder and Scully's post-FBI lives sooner. I think DD and GA did a great job with bringing the characters back to life, even if Scully was a little hard on Mulder. Wasn't sure where I was going a few times with the plot, but it worked out. Hopefully, Chris and the other writers can get a real suspense story line together soon and try again. I'll be there, as long as DD and GA are there! Thanks for giving me a reason to go anywhere near our movie theater on a Friday night.

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? This was not even a good television episode. Nothing notable or so edgy that it warrants a big screen feature. Meh. I would have liked to have seen something really scary... like maybe have the people that were being sewn together creep around and stuff, kinda like Frankenstein monsters, but instead, it just fizzles at the end...it was a total "yawner". What a disappointment.

This movie was OK. All the devoted X-Files fans like myself will see it and will feel it was worth seeing. But, I left the theater with a sense of disappointment. The movie could have been so much better. This was as good as an average episode of the X-files at best. It didn't have the kind of epic story line of Fight the Future and it didn't have the creepiness of some of the better "monster of the week" episodes. It just wasn't that scary. Getting caught up with the lives of our favorite T.V. characters will be enough of a reason for the real fans to go, but I am afraid that the box offices numbers won't be high enough to justify them making the movie we all really want to see. That is, the proper end of the Alien Invasion story line. I hope enough people go to the movie to leave that option open. That might be the only reason for any of us to see this movie twice.
