i came into this movie thinking it was going to be a total bomb but it was better than i expected. if u havent seen the show i think u still might enjoy it but u wont know the chemistry between moulder and scully. but if u are just looking for a good time at the movies go see step brothers. i will see that today and i saw this at midnight.

If you're an X Files fan, go see this movie and you'll enjoy even though it's a bit slow and filled with David Duchovony one liners that are a bit cornball but whatever..Gillian anderson looks and act great.

As a longtime fan of "The X-Files," I went to the midnight showing of this long awaited continuation in the Mulder/Scully drama with hesitant hopes. Much like "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," the feeling of a movie being made just to make some money and not necessarily continue the story was something I couldn't shake, but I went regardless. Spoiler alert - The plot follows Scully, a now full-time doctor who has left the FBI and is asked to find Mulder, so they may use his X-Files knowledge to find a missing agent who is supposedly being tracked by a psychic, once pedophilic priest played by Billy Connoly. Along the way, more people are found missing and a mountain of body parts frozen in West Virgina tundra give more clues to a sinister organ harvesting sceme. -End spoiler alert. Unfortunately, the title "I Want to Believe" is where the biggest problem lies. The film gets bogged down repeatedly with religious and tired diatribes between Mulder and Scully, arguing more over whether God exists rather than aliens. It felt like every time Mulder and Scully got on screen together, the audience was holding their breath, waiting for some revolutionary conversation between them, only to be let down with another "Mulder, I can't help you, I have a new life now and you'll always be looking for your dead sister. Give up and give up the X-Files." There are some saving graces. The plot of the villains is sci-fi enough to satisfy, and the ending action sequence has the same amount of stomach-churning anxiety and suspense we had from the golden age of the series. But it all feels forced in the end. It's almost palpable how uncomfortable Gillian Anderson feels playing Scully again, while (thankfully) David Duchovny slides right back into his theory-posing sunflower seed-munching brooding. For a die-hard fan, they'll see the film regardless of any bad reviews (myself included), but for any person whose interest was piqued in the X-Files due to this new film, I'd hand them a box set of Season 1 and send them on their way.

I would like to preface this review by saying that I was a firm 'Files' fan all the way through to the end. While this film has it's "cute" moments between our two agents, I found it to be overall lacking any feeling that I was actually watching X-Files. Overall, this felt much more like a drawn out episode of C.S.I. with some interesting sci-fi bits thrown in. There were a few references that many fans will recognize but overall, they were lacking. There were no Aliens or Government Conspiracy and absolutely no grandiose scope needed for a truly engaging film.

AWESOME!!!!! Anybody who enjoyed The X Files will enjoy this movie, but they also made it enjoyable for people who may not have seen the series. I don’t want to give too much away; but it was really well done, and left doors open for sequals. (Chris Carter said in several interviews that the success of this film will determine if they do anymore)
Don’t go in expecting to see things about aliens or government cover-ups. They did this story more like their “monster of the week” type stories they use to do. (The recent Indiana Jones movie had more to do with the parnormal than this movie.) It’s rated “R” for good reason. It’s a very dark and somewhat gruesome story. They did however have a good bit of humor to lighten things up without going overboard. Some of the jokes you’ll appreiciate more if you watched the show, but it’s entertaining either way.
There is also a very touching back-story about Scully’s continuing struggle between her Christian beliefs and the realities of science. Being a doctor and working with the FBI she’s seen so many tragedies and has had to deal with a lot of human suffering.
I'll definately see it again!!!

I liked the movie as a stand alone, but haven't decided if it is a good X-files Movie or not. The Mulder/Scully dynamic was adorable and beleivable, the references except for one blatant reference were hysterical, and the surprise guest was AWESOME!!! I went with a non fan who loved the movie and I agree that the plot can totally hold its own. I am also a little annoyed with Amanda Peet.... cause seriously... she has no place in an X-files movie. Also... stay until the end of the credit folks... well worth it!!!!

I loved it. It brings closure and I think it answered a lot of questions. My husband was disappointed, he wanted it to be more about EBE's and UFO's. If that is what you want you probably won't like it. It's an excellent thriller, but it's also about what happened (s) to Scully and Mulder. I don't want to give away too much, but if you want to know if it was his baby...see the movie. It was just what I thought it should be. It's not the same Mulder and Scully from the 1990's. But he is still sharp with his wit though visably a little tired of the whole thing. Scully is still just as cynical, and annoying, but in that good scully way. The chemistry between them still sizzles. You are sad that it's done, but you know for sure it is and at the same time happy with how it ended. Chris Carter did a great job.

I saw this movie at a midnight showing and I must say it was well worth the lack of sleep. If you have never seen any episodes of x-files you might be a little lost with a few "funny" things. Other then that is had a great plot, and was an awesome movie all around. I suggest going to see it.

This move was true to the X-files in every aspect possible! I walked out of the theater praising myself for deciding to go sleep deprived today so I could see the midnight showing last night. It would have fit in as a regular episode and had all the fav's back. It was thrilling, suspenseful, funny, and I have to say Xhibit plays a hardass well. It was soo Scully, Mulder, and Skinner. It had Scully's skeptism and Mulder's belief in everything fulfilled the true X-Files soul.
There were only 2 things I questioned...someone's car went over a revene and the next day a brand new car was back and 2 on Mulder's phone, you see him scroll through names and instead of "Scully" it's listed as "Gillian".
If you are an X-Files fan, as I am and have always been, you will enjoy this...the plot, storyline, twists, and end result are SO worth it and you will be pleased. It was fantastic. I think I'm going to go see it again!

This movie surpassed all expectations that this viewer held! Full of whimsical lines and begging for a return to the series. The only poor acting was from Alvin "Exzibit" Joiner, who was quite awful and added nothing to the movie. Scully and Mulder were fabulous!

I went to see this movie last night with two of my friends. I'm an avid fan, one friend is a casual fan, and the other never really watched the show. We all loved it!
The movie is smart, funny, and intriguing - keeps your attention the whole way through! Fans will love Mulder and Scully in their glory, and regular movie-goers will love the mystery and old-school horror feel.

I loved the X-files. I loved the relationship between Mulder and Scully. I didn't LOVE this movie. I pre-purchased tickets online for the mindnight showing after anticipating another movie since the last one came out. I felt this it was only good. I didn't expect anything spectacular but for being away for so long I guess I was expecting a little more. I cannot say it was not good; I am after all an X-files fan. However the movie seem more like just an extended version of a weekly episode. I always thought of myself as a die-hard fan even going as far as watching all the shipper media out there. David and Gillian still have the same relationship dynamic they always had, but it just wasn't exciting. Maybe it's just me. I hope others feel much more excited about it than I do. I'm on the fence about whether or not they should do another movie. Maybe so, but bring the mytharc back in. I think it was the depth of the conspiracy and the growing sexual tension that kept us on our toes all those years. Please, I hope you enjoy the movie more than I did because I truly love the X-files and will never stop being interested.

As a long-time fan of the X-Files, I admit I was concerned that this movie would not live up to my expectations. In actuality, the movie exceeded my expectations! Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz provided us with a movie that was suspensful and true to the original characters/ series. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson returned to their roles as Mulder and Scully as if no time had elapsed. I would definitely recommend this movie to everyone and can't wait to see it again!

I really, truly wanted to believe this movie would not only bring back to the big screen the classic X-Files (the something that made it what it was and kept fans tuning in week after week for years) but alas it brings only frustration, disappointment and most likely the biggest box office bomb of Summer 2008 and maybe even all of 2008. A sizeable number of die-hard fans (as is clear from several early reviews on IMDB) may keep it from actually attaining the worst performing movie of the year. That said, no number of die-hard movie goers will be able to change the cold hard truth about 'I Want To Believe' and that is that aside from about 15 minutes of watchable content and a few Mulder & Scully scenes that fans have been wanting and waiting on for over a decade, this film is an example of how not to make a movie. Not only is the pace bad but the film is missing every single thing that made the show a hit except for the main characters, Mulder & Scully. There are no UFO's, Aliens or anything of the unexplained except for a poor attempt at a psychic connection which is wasted on a priest who is also a convicted pedophile. To add to the bad storyline is the low production value. The cinematography itself isn't bad, in fact it's beautiful, however one can watch but just so many minutes of beautiful shots of snow and ice before wondering if they are watching a movie or a documentary on snow and ice. The lack of any decent effects and very limited action and the fact that it's obvious everything was filmed on site somewhere eliminating the need for any sets or stage shots points a very low amount being spent on production. If this film did have a sizeable budget it certainly wasn't spent on the production. I can only imagine one or more persons must have commanded high salaries to appear. And after seeing the quality or more accurately, lack there of in the films story, I would imagine the actors would have to be bribed heavily to be willing to appear in this film. Bottom line is The X-Files 'I Want To Believe' is more aptly described as The EX-X Files 'Youre Not Gonna Want To Believe, Ever..'. Chris Carter should be ashamed of this and should fight tooth and nail (because no studio will probably trust him again with an X-Files movie) for a chance at a third X-Files movie so as to have the chance to produce what the first film fell short off and this last one was a violent offense and make amends to fans for what 'I Want To Believe' does to the franchise. Never have I seen the creator of something as marketable as or as well loved as The X-Files, so badly treat his/her creation. Chris Carter should be embarrassed and ashamed of this film.

boring......Story was surprisingly bland..no frights, no interesting twists or turns. I walked out when they started having the psycho-religious conversation about believing in things that aren't what they seem or something. I guess that was the end of the movie...don't know---couldn't take any more. Utterly shocked that this movie got 4.5 stars from Roger Ebert. Rent the first one instead.
