that this movie would live up to the TV phenom...but it was quite dissapointing. The best part of the movie was when Mulder shaved off his facial hair to show us why we think he is one of the hottest men alive. That was it.

Being a huge fan of the tv show, I found the movie to be entertaining. It was slow in parts and the plot was muddled but It was like a stand-alone episode of the show as was promised. Yes there were episodes of the show that were dowright scary but most of the them just gave you the creeps and the movie succeeded in that. It was nice to see Mulder and Scully on film again even if it wasn't perfect. The banter, the chemistry, the ust was all still there. Of course t could have been better but it also could've been a whole lot worse. If you liked even the most mediocre of the tv episodes, you won't have a problem with the movie. I hope they get a chance to make more.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

it is true what they said that this movie has nothing to do with the mythology of the x-files so please keep that in mind when you watch it. however, this movie was made for the fans. it is not the best movie ever and there are x-files tv shows that are more entertaining, but it certainly is not boring or disappointing. you see an older version of scully and mulder and how their lives have changed. it's the usual set up of mulder going in head first and scully coming to rescue him and believe him for half a second then refuse to believe what she saw or felt for a moment. as far as people saying scully changed, it is true she is more like her character in season 3 but think about it, after leaving the x-files for so long and being put back into a more religious/scientific environment, she doesn't see strange things every week and that might have changed her. there are some questions left unanswered in the movie - but i guess that is what makes it an x-files movie.

I *wanted to believe* that this would be the start of a series of X-Files flicks but sadly I must say this is probably the beginning of the end of the X-Files saga...I left the theater feeling like I had seen a *spoof* of the real X-Files...I just wanted to go home & rewatch the last ep.of the series or the first X-Files movie which was way better & left me wanting more X-Files movies...I guess I will just put this behind me & live with the fond memories of what the X-Files was when it ended in 2002.

Although it did bring us up to date on the relationship between Mulder & Scully, that is where the similiarities between the movie and the weekly show ends. This was just another police drama, and not a great one at that. After waiting for four years, this was a bust.

If you are looking for this movie to be equal to or even better than the first movie, forget it. No where near it. Being a huge X-Files fan, I was happy to see the Mulder/Scully characters but completely disappointed in the storyline. I felt like this was one of the tv shows that didn't make it when the series was on and just written to add their lives post FBI. Chris Carter could have turned this story around and I believe if he really thought it through, could have made this a blockbuster. But it isn't. I left the theater ticked off this afternoon.

I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was great to see Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on the screen again, six years after the end of the television series. The characters themselves had not been suspended in time, and had gone on for six years in their 'lives.' The plot was labrynthine, multi-layered and quite deep on a psychological and religious level ... with faith (not necessarily in a higher power) and refusing to give up being a key element to the story and the characters. There are several subplots running through the story, and the time goes fast in the theatre. Having seen it twice has helped clarify some points I missed during the first viewing. Some 'reading between the lines' might be necessary. Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz threw quite a few very nice bones to the 'old guard' fans, by using visuals that mean something to them but would NOT hamper a new viewer's experience. There were laugh-out loud moments and also moments that made you jump. Given the LOW production budget of the film, in this day and age of massive CGI SFX, the film performed quite well and was beautifully lensed by Bill Roe.. My only true complaint about the film was Fox Studios' impressive *LACK* of PR, marketing and advertisement until just two weeks before the premiere. They let it to word of mouth via the X-Files fans, and therefore, if the film does not perform well at the theatres, it's my opinion that Fox shot themselves in the foot by NOT doing more to promote the film. I hope there will be an X-Files 3, to go back into the show's mytharc and the 'end of the world' scenario as was predicted/envisioned by the show's creators/producers.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The storyline of this film was a great puzzle and developed the characters very well. Even though the story fails to follow the main X-Files storyline, this side story is one of mystery. The suspense of determining the plot and waiting to find out what happens next kept me on the edge of my seat. A definite must for all X- Files fans and psycological thriller fans alike.

I feel that many reviewers are profoundly misunderstanding the point of this film. Mulder and Scully are not on The X-Files anymore. I don't think it was a secret that this movie focused heavily on where the former agents are in their lives today. This movie puts them back in their old shoes temporarily, which they realize they've grown out of. It also addresses interesting moral issues and fleshes out the struggles of two people who have been through an awful lot of horrible things together -- but still "want to believe" that there is true happiness to be found. I do agree that the plot line of the actual case is confusing at times, but it does clear itself up in the end. Anyway, in my mind, the case is not the most important part of this film -- it's only one part of a whole message. And you have to pay careful attention to find that message. I guess that's a lot to ask of people who need to be 'wow'ed by gore and special effects.

As a faithful X-Phile who's been watching the show since the pilot aired (I was in third grade. Heh.), I was really looking forward to IWTB.
The Good
* Um, it's an X-FILES MOVIE. Need I say more? I've been waiting a damn decade for another movie, so I was just glad that it finally existed. * There was a hilarious Dubya reference. * Xzibit? Really a pretty good actor. * Mulder and Scully were in bed together! And they kissed! And they had this cute lovey relationship! I'm sorry for getting all shippery and fangirl, but I missed the Mulder-Scully chemistry. The reason the show didn't work after Duchovny left (well... kinda left) is that Mulder and Scully ARE the X-Files. Doggett and Reyes never could have carried the show. I love them as characters, and they served their purpose in the plot, but... no. They are not Mulder and Scully. * Awesome references to the show: sunflower seeds, pencils in the ceiling, The Poster, mentioning William, having Skinner make an appearance. Very cool. * The overall theme of the story, about passions for people and passions for work and how they can conflict and interact and compliment one another, was great.
However, the movie was not without its share of problems.
The Bad
* I like Scully better with shorter hair. Not that I don't still think Gillian is absolutely gorgey, because I do, but Scully needs the bob. And not that craptastic big-bangs thing she had going on in season one. We (the collective fandom) pretend that didn't happen. * Cancer Boy could have been left out of the story, and it really wouldn't have hurt the plot any. That whole substory was kinda sentimental and cheeseball, if you ask me, and it felt like it had been added in just to reference and address the William issue. * Nobody brought up the fact that we're supposed to be taken over by the aliens in four years. I know this wasn't a mytharc story, but... helloooo? Impending colonization? Enslavement of the human race? Not even a mention. * I thought that the creepy head-transplant scenes could have been... well, creepier. I would have liked to have seen more of the laboratory, and more scenes demonstrating the surgical process. And more of the blinking, disembodied head. Maybe in a pan of neck juice, to pay homage to The Brain/Head that Wouldn't Die. * The score was... off. Mark Snow did the score, but it just didn't feel very... X-Files-y. I dunno. If I hadn't known it was Snow conducting, I certainly couldn't have said, "Oh, this is Mark Snow's music." It wasn't his signature X-Files style, and it kinda threw me off. * The ending was... meh. I'd really like to see a follow-up movie to wrap up everything with the aliens and the mythology, because this one kinda left me wanting more closure to that end of things. I can haz one moar, Chris Carter?
Overall, I loved the movie, despite its flaws. Because, like I said, X-FILES MOVIE.
Thumbs up, four stars.
Gillian thirst satiated.

A pretty good movie. Not as good as Fight The Future but what can you expect when the show's been over for a few years? Decent storyline, some nice inside jokes for us longterm fans, and the acting was great. Duchovny and Anderson really got back into their roles, it was refreshing. As a fan of the show and the first movie, I had high expectations for the second X-Files film and was sadly disappointed! Overall, the story and characterizations were very weak and a lot of time was spent on side stories like Mulder and Scully's relationship and Scully's battle over her decision to treat a young patient. I felt the movie as a whole was disjointed and we were left hanging by a lack of some important details. I also didn't think the case being investigated should be considered an X-File. I think Grissom's CSI team could have solved it just as quickly.

I am not sure how I feel about this new movie. I just saw it. I think that if you are looking for a movie that is full of action and truer to the original series you'd be better off with the previous film version. Yet there was something quite comforting about this movie...it was like a 2 hour X-files episode focused on who Mulder and Scully are now. It was good, don't get me wrong...it just felt like a beggining.

Mulder and Scully return to the big screen and they do it in style. Chris Carter has done it again. The X-Files: I Want to Believe lives up to the decade long wait for another X-Files movie. It's scary and smart, it's the X-Files and it's so good! It has the obligatory Mulder and Scullyism that fans will adore, as well as a deep intellectual battle that will thrill anyone. There's so much to say about, but it's better to experience it in person. So head to your local theatre and experience Mulder and Scully at their best!

The first movie was awesome, as it followed the style of the series. As an X Files fan, I did not care for the sequel. I found many times during the show seemed to lag and be simply unentertaining--a few people walked, some fell asleep. This movie will be a letdown for hardcore fans, as it was more murder mystery than sci-fi. I felt like I was watching Scooby Doo half the time.

"I Want to Believe" is a good subtitle. It's not quite as strong a sentiment as "I Believe", so it fits a movie that's just not that strong.
But it was good enough, and it didn't let me down. I probably have a very low story-continuation bar after the Star Wars prequels (I hate them, in my Star Wars universe they do not exist). So maybe, being braced for disappointment, the movie could shine a little bit more.
For a Monster-of-the-Week story, it wasn't the best. The villains and anti-heroes weren't great. I don't think Amanda Peet did a good job of acting, although Xzibit was alright (bit of a one-note character, but he played that note well). The story, the plot twists, none of it was as good as some of the best episodes, but it didn't feel like a TV movie that was trying to hard. It was better than that.
As a fan I was probably most concerned that Carter and crew would have done something awful to Mulder and Scully and their relationship. I was relieved that, despite some direct discussions, the backstory of what was going on between the end of the series and the movie was still vague enough that I wasn't angry, or disappointed. After the commercials I was afraid that M&S had been living apart and not even in communication - after the movies I am actually not sure what their lives were! Which is perfect, because it leaves me free to believe what I want to believe, and interpret the movie in a way that works for me.
It had it's weaknesses, and the strengths weren't strong enough to overcome them and really raise the bar on this movie. I am sure it could have been better - but I am so very relieved because it also could have been awful. So it was good enough, it was worth the ticket, it was worthy of the X-Files although it certainly won't be remembered among the best.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was great for what it was, a new segmant of The X Files. I know a lot of people expected more, but I enjoyed sitting there wathing Mulder and Scully thrive on the screen again. The main story is actually not the case Mulder get's dragged into. The story is how Mulder and Scully have evolved since the ending of the show, or haven't. Scully is happy to be out of the life that brought monsters, demons, death threats, and men in black into her life. Yes, she asks Mulder to help the FBI, but only to clear his name. She forgot that he wouldn't be able to stop at just a consult. He will always find his sister looking back at him when dealing with a missing persons case. Mulder thrived at being back in action, even without his gun. However, as always, he realized he can't do it without Scully. The main case may be odd, a little stretched out, but it is The X Files. The case is just a tool being used to tune into the characters beliefs now. For the fans, there are many placements of familar faces and things that are remembered from the TV Show.

I loved this movie, I am a complete X-Phile. It was a wonderful thriller that was very reminiscent of the early X-Files. The story is a great reintroduction to this franchise. The next step will be to obviously revisit the alien mythology :) hopefully fans won't have to wait as long! Mark Snow did a great job with the score (as always) David stepped right back into Mulder, and although Gillian seemed to be a bit un-Scully like at times I think it just shows the evolution of the character herself. The brief Mitch cameo (Skinner) was perfect! Skinman is back!! Overall this was a great thriller, for long time fans and those new to the series. (New fans will be confused at the mention of William) Amanda Peet and Alvin Joiner are nice editions....Alvin especially but I think they could have been replaced by Robert Patrick....I did miss Doggett (Reyes not so much) but hopefully there will be room for him in the third movie. Great acting, amazing scenery, witty dialog, it was real and gritty, perfect for the X-Files. Going into this movie not knowing anything other than it was a monster of the week movie allowed me to be on the edge of my seat the entire time, it felt like back when I first watched the series and every week I was just on pins and needles! So I will not reveal anything here. Bring on the third movie Chris Carter!! You and Frank are awesome!! P.S. stay till the end of the credits.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

7 years in the waiting and one would of thought that a motion picture would satisfy the appetites of fans worldwide! Where was the conspiracy, the suspenseful drama, the umph that made The X Files what it was for 9 seasons? The characters were true to the end, Scully's logic and Mulder's need to Believe, but the story was should have been an episode not what fans needed after such a period of waiting. As a fan, I enjoyed just seeing my favorite characters again on the screen, to get an insight on what happened after the Great Escape, I just wished my curiosity could have been better answered. Overall, if you're a fan, watch the movie just because you get to see the Insight, and if you're not, well, then, just watch it because your friend IS the fan.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The X-Files is back, and we still believe! The X-Files: I Want to Believe was excellent. I have been waiting along time for this movie after the show concluded back in 2002, and 6 years later this movie didn't disappoint. My roommate who isn't really a big X-Files fan, liked this movie. I would highly recommend this movie to any die hard X-Files fan, and even non fans will enjoy this movie. A definate must see, Mulder and Scully are back.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I watch for the entertainment value - not for any "deeper" messages. That being said, the X-Files movie is a very good TV episode. If you love the X-Files, go see it. It would have been a good 1-hour episode, but it was entertaining. I won't say more than that (Aliens? Grand message?) to avoid spoiling or disappointing those looking for . . . Is it a vague review? Yep. For my money, it's not a great movie, and it's not bad. PS - Stay through the ENTIRE credits. Don't leave early!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was terrible. They waited around 6 years to take the biggest dump possible on the chests of all their fans. The previews triumphantly declare that "The truth will be revealed." The only truth that was revealed is that Chris Carter wants to end his career and bring the entire X-Files franchise down with him. People watch X-Files for the aliens, creepy crawlies, monsters, and tension between Scully and Moulder. None of this was there. In the beginning of the film, Scully says she's done chasing monsters in the dark. Well, that's good Scully, because, in this film, you won't be. They traded in the paranormal for a lesson on ethics that no one was looking for. And on top of them completely ignoring what the X-Files is about, it was BORING. A two-hour long snoozefest. Don't waste your money on going to see this movie. If you really want to see it, watch it at home with some friends and turn it into a drinking game where you take a shot every time you are bored or they aren't following what the X-Files is really about. You'll be wasted within the first 15 minutes.

I thoroughly enjoyed I Want to Believe. It was a lot of fun and pretty scary too. I went with two friends who aren't die-hard fans like I am, and they enjoyed it too.
The underlying themes are beautifully woven into the story. David and Gillian are absolutely enchanting to watch on screen. They have some of the most amazing chemistry on screen I've ever seen and it makes you want to watch them over and over again.
The actual plot of the missing girl/FBI agent provides plenty of creepiness and had my two friends and me squirming in our seats. But the true driving force of the movie is the beautiful relationship between Mulder and Scully and the way their relationship has changed and evolved in the past 6 years. The plot of them looking for the missing persons is only a catalyst for the truth and darkness to catch up to Mulder and Scully.
The writing is great, the acting is superb (Bill Connoley is brilliant), and the entire thing feels like a longer version of an old episode of the X-files.
I will say that I thought stakes could have been higher throughout the entire movie. I felt like there weren't enough obstacles for Mulder and Scully, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed the movie!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was a GREAT movie. Eventhough it was a standalone among the conspiracy of the X-Files it was great. Kept me on the edge of my seat. I will more than likely see it a few more times in theatre! A must see for any X-Phile out there!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I am an X-Phile and while I wanted Chris Carter to do a bunch of inside jokes and focus on the 'soap opera' plots, Chris Carter delivers exactly what he has promised for months- A movie that any individual can watch, regardless of their history with the X-Files. If you have never seen an episode, I believe you could watch this film. Rest assured X-Philes, you will love it just as much despite it being a stand alone plot, see for yourself. The movie is not overwhelmingly or shockingly amazing but instead delivers superb performances by the actors who deliver just over an hour and a half of the X-Files. Unlike the first X-files movie, one does not have to have previous knowledge and should come expecting only to see a suspense and action filled episode of the show. Though I could rave about it forever, the short answer is- Chris Carter did well. You should go see the movie. Oh yeah- stay for the credits. :-)
Yes, I recommend this movie.

First off, let me state that I wasn't fortunate enough to watch the series when it was on tv. I've only caught bits and pieces of the series here and there and have seen the other movie. What I saw, I liked though. As for this movie, it really seemed more like an overly glorified episode rather than enough to draw me to a theatre. It seems to have been full of alot of "in" moments where a previous knowledge of the series would have helped me dramatically. I was hoping for a movie that would wrap up the entire franchise for me (considering the age of the series and it's actors), but instead got just some meh story.
The movie was well told for what it was, as well as well acted. However the writing didn't say "feature length" movie at all. There was very little of the unexplained in the movie at all as well. Mostly the dynamic of the relationship of the two partners. Rent it at best. But you'll probably only really enjoy it if your a die hard fan.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
