This movie surpised me in a good way. It wasn't as creepy or frightening as the old TV show, it was more of a deep character study of two people drawn together by something bigger than them. No aliens this time, but we get caught up with Mulder and Scully and how they are grappling with the consequences of Mulder's obsession about ET's and the paranormal. The writing and acting is sharp, and Gillian Anderson is especially good as Scully. I understand that the story isn't what some fans (or me) expected or wanted, but it's as good or better than any epsiode of the venerable series. Here's hoping it makes enough money to continue the franchise.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

While this feature length version of the cult hit series did not deal with as much of the supernatural as the television show, nor the green men of the first film, X-Files I want to believe offers a more in depth human side of our heroes, former agent (now playing doctor full time) Dana Scully, and former agent Fox Mulder (now hanging around a bungalo for two not doing much of anything but hiding from the FBI. Apparenntly whatever he did since the series ended really angered some fo the top brass.
Mulder is called in by Scully to help find a missinig agent, thought to have disappeared under "odd" circumstances.
The relationship between Mulder and Scully is as muddled in the filml as it was in the series. We see them sleeping in the same bed, they do share one (or maybe two) kiss but in a scene where they discuss their "feelings" Scully points out to Mulder, "Your passion is what made me fall in love with you" and Fox's answer: "that's why we can't be together".
There is one very brief appearance by Agent Skinner, the two agent's head honcho in the series but other than that there are no other characters we came to know and love (or hate) to be found.
For me the best thing about the movie is the chemistry between Anderson and Duchovny, and even that was lacking the spark it once had during the lonog running series.
Not much in line of real action, and again for the Sci-Fi fans, prepare to be disappointed as all plot really comes down to is a bunch of crazed Russians stealing people in the purpose of harvesting body parts.
The movie drags, the agents aren't together nearly enough and I have a question: WHO'S IDEA WAS IT TO PUT AMANDA PETE OF ALL PEOPLE IN THE FILM AS AN FBI AGENT??? This woman is portraying a sharp and smart agent. Are you kidding me with this?
My date gave it four stars and I 2 1/2 so We settled on ***. But, if you want a good movie with good action, and lots of chills and thrills - go see Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and absolutely, see The Dark Knight again if you already haven't. I know I shall.

it was good, it wasn't great. agree it didnt have the suspense or intrigue of even some of the better episodes. it was kinda fun to be back in x-files land, though, and we enjoyed it enough. but wasn't a "wow" film by any means, and their relationship is a bizarre one - that was the part of the movie that i had the hardest time believing!

In a nutshell: (ha, get it? Nutshell?) Anyway, if you loved the show, you are going to love the movie. It's got everything you want from one of the classic episodes: a great mystery, paranormal phenomena, tension between Mulder/Scully and all of the rest of the FBI, and, of course, the beautiful and haunting portrayals of Mulder and Scully by Duchovny and Anderson. I loved it and felt VERY satisfied when it was over.
If you did not watch the show, I think you would still enjoy the movie, possibly even more than the first movie. This movie doesn't require any knowledge of the show's background. It's a smart horror flick and it'll make you drop your popcorn more than once.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

It was an ok movie to watch, but definitely not as good as the first X-Files movie. It was kind of boring; I acutally found myself with my eyes shut dozing a couple of times. It didn't really have a good story line that was interesting enough to keep your attention; however, I guess everyone has his or her own opinion about what makes a good movie. I invite everyone to go watch it and make his or her own opinion about the movie.

If you were an X-Files fan, you'll like this movie. Great episode of the X-Files in movie form. Why 4 and not 5 stars? The only part that I was not happy with was the writing for the scenes between Scully and Mulder. It wasn't that natural. They had a lot of explaining and wrapping up to do from the last season to now and they kind of threw it all in this episode which hopefully means they won't even have to touch it in the next movie.
Beyond that, if you've been wanting new episodes of the tv show, this will most definitely quench your thirst.

We have not seen Mulder and Scully in a while, so it was difficult to re-connect with their characters and it seems they felt the same way. Because there was something missing in their chemistry. On the other hand, I think this was a typical XFILES story, but better made for TV. If you are an XFILES fan wait for video

i must admit that it was not quite what i expected, but it was very enjoyable for me. You get to see the characters in a very different light than the series and the 1st movie. It seemed a little off if you are expecting an X files formula for the script. I think this is a mistake for the "franchise". I can see how this may get very mixed reviews, although fans of the show will no doubt love it, as i do, others may rip it up..i suspect i will see it again this weekend, as there were some distractions in seats around me which may have caused me to enjoy a little less, causing me not to give better review of the movie....my advice go see it even if you are not a fan, the chemistry is still there between the characters, although i dont feel it was showcased enough in script....also stay till credits roll ,there is something neat afterward.....

This movie has some great moments with Mulder and Scully, and it gives a good idea of what happened to Our Heroes after the show ended. But the plot itself is like a too-long episode with a slip-shod plot that's ultimately boring and eventually ceases to make sense. For die-hard fans only, and even some of them may not be pleased with the result.

Think back those of you who went to see the Simpsons movie and remember that feeling when Homer sat up and accosted the audience for paying for what we saw on TV for free. That is kinda how I felt after leaving I Want To Believe.
Now I am a huge fan of the series and I did enjoy the first movie immensely but where the first X files movie and I Want To Believe differ is in scope more than story.
There was a good story presented to us with this new installment letting us see into the post life of Mulder and Scully after their departure from the FBI. Not to mention David Duchovny as well as Gillian Anderson really stepped right back into the roles we all loved so much, Huddled around the TV on a friday night waiting for Chris Carters next ticket for us to the supernatural.
But there in which is also my problem it all felt too familiar, the story was good but just too linear compared to what I have come to expect from CC over the years. And we were supposed to get all caught up in the relationship of Mulder and Scully, but it is nothing we have really not felt or seen before.
In fact it just felt kinda shoved in there grasping at the audience every 10 minutes, like we needed reminding that they were star crossed lovers torn by the darkness that seemed to follow them. I mean I know most people have the attention span of a gnat but come on, if I had to hear them near tears on screen because girl loves boy but boy loves aliens more one more time I was going to weep bitter tears of pain.
So here we sit with great acting a story that had potential but was straight, flat and went really no where and alot of snow. I mean alot of snow in fact I thought I was going to get snow blindness if I kept staring at the screen.
There was nothing in the "movie" to warrant it being on the big screen, it really could have been a two part season episode and we all would have raved and loved it back in the glory days but now it feels like Chris Carters feeble attempt to bring himself back into limelight. So yea I give it three stars one for acting one for the G.W pun and one more just for utter love of the series.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

My only problem with this movie is that I had to wait so long for it. If the suits at Fox could have gotten their act together to greenlight this project four or five years ago, this would be a perfect X-files movie, and we would most likely have seen another one by now. As it is, we were starved for six years and then fed an appetizer. A succulent and tasty appetizer, but not an entree by any means. For those criticizing the "monster" element of the story, one must take into account that the payoff wasn't the reason for the existence of this story. Exploring the relationship between Mulder's and Scully's respective ways of practicing their faiths and how the differences between each affected their relationship to each other is what was on the board here. Everything else was just an outward manifestation of that inner conflict within the unit made up of these two characters. This was not a suspense/thriller so much as it was a meditation on the things that pull us together and drive us apart and how it's often a razor-fine line between the two. It was an enormous payoff for this viewer (and spouse and niece of this viewer as well), but left me clamoring for another. And another (Mr. Carter, do you think we can get two more before December, 2012?). As far as the box office goes, I'm afraid this quiet, intimate, dark, snowy film is going to be lost in the sturm und drang of this summer's blockbuster season, but here's hoping the international and home video sales prod the corp-tards at Fox to pony up for at least one more. I know I'll be filling a seat.

I'm glad this wasn't my first experience viewing X-files, or I would have been a little disappointed. Prior knowledge of how good the series made the slower parts more bearable. By no means was this a bad movie, but they basically took an X-files episode and stretched it to fill a movie quota. I also had hoped that the movie would deal a little more with the paranormal, this almost seemed like a CSI bit. I would still see it again, but I was a little worried my movie companion would find it a little dull, as I had sung the praises of the series on the way to the show, and had gotten his hopes up. I regretted it as the film continued to try to build suspense, but instead ended up just building nothing upon nothing. Better idea: go to Blockbuster and rent the X-files seasons - way more intense and interesting.

A very weak attempt at revival. I LOVE the X-Files television show but this movie simply didn't have the X-Files "feel" about it. The blood and gore just seemed like meaningless filler. The movie was completely detached from anything even remotely relating to the X-Files plot line; I'm not sure if they were doing that to try and appeal to a broader audience but seriously, who are they kidding? The only people who would be interested in X-Files were the people who followed the show, which ended in 2002. Furthermore, I felt that some of the casting choices were highly inappropriate (Amanda Peet and Xzibit as serious FBI agents? Get real) and they really blew the chance for The X-Files to make a great comeback. All and all...don't waste your time and money.

but I couldn't. This movie is something that fans of the series have been foaming at the mouth for... only to find a long version of a so-so episode. The first movie was epic compared to this effort. The x-files shock and excitement was lacking in this movie. The continuation of the Mulder and Scully storyline is something worthy for fans of the show to see, but it could easily wait for the DVD.
I really hated not liking this movie - especially after reading that a potential third installment depends on the success of this film... if my opinion of the film (and the fact that Dark Knight is most likely reign supreme at the box office) is any trend, it doesn't look good for a third X-Files film.

This movie is about the reunion of Scully & Mulder and their adventures tracking the whereabouts of a missing FBI agent. They depend on assistance from a convicted pedophile priest who is having psychic visions that he attributes to G-d. Scully is reluctant to go along with these visions, but does her own soul searching as she races to find a treatment for a terminally ill boy at the Catholic Hospital where she works now after leaving the FBI. The film gives all X-philes a little taste of nostalgia and there are several show specific references that will be lost on a general viewer. The plot seemed to be Chris Carter's take on the mythology of Dr. Frankenstein. Overall the movie was good, not great. It kept our interest, but it seemed to lack the original shows' suspenseful elements.

While I don't want to give away any of the surprises so carefully protected by the cast and crew on the release date, I can say that this movie is a monster-of-the-week X-Phile's dream come true. Duchovny and Anderson are at the top of their game--indeed I would say that Gillian steals the movie--and Carter's direction is crisp and to-the-point. I found the lack of CGI and all-live stunts to be refreshing and unique in this day and age.
The only problems I had with the movie were the almost-sudden ending, which I wish had been drawn out a bit more, the lack of real scares/thrills as I wouldn't call it a "scary" movie, and the short runtime. And remember, do NOT leave the theater until the lights come up--there's a very special scene after the credits roll.
This is already one of the THE best movies I've ever seen of any genre which I can't wait to see again.

I am a rabid X-Files fan (XPhile), which admittedly makes it extrmemely difficult for me to be an impartial judge when it comes to the new X-Files movie. In my opinion, anyone who who loved the show will want to see this movie, purely to see Mulder and Scully brought to life again after 6 long years. I saw this movie at a midnight showing on the release date and I can attest to the fact that all XPhiles will find much to love about this movie. The movie contains many inside jokes and references that had the theater audience laughing (in unison) in appreciation and recognition.
As for the plot, I found it to be eerie and disturbing enough that even non-Philes could appreciate the movie for the storyline alone.
As for X-Philes like myself, it was pure joy to be reimmersed into the world of Mulder and Scully for 2 hours and I think it took at least 2 hours after the movie ended before I could wipe the dopey grin off my face.
One last thing: I don't want to give any out-and-out spoilers, but I feel like all XPhiles out there should be alerted to remain in their seats until the movie is COMPLETELY over.

Clearly the person above is NOT a fan of the show because I just came back from watching the movie and have to say I was thrilled. The chemistry between David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson is still electrifying and they do justice to their character's relationship. The plot was also interesting, but the heart of the movie truly is the struggle between Mulder and Scully to balance work and love and it's fascinating. I can't wait until its on DVD. For real fans: stay until all of the credits roll...there's a little surprise at the end :-)

I was disappointed in the reviews that I had read before seeing The X-Files. As a long time fan of the show, "I Want to Believe" captured the essence of everything the show was about. Anderson and Duchovny fall comfortably back into their roles as Scully and Mulder. Whichever reviewer said the chemistry wasn't there should remember a phrase Scully had in the pilot: "The answers are there, you just have to know where to look." Mulder and Scully's chemistry is in him knowing she is walking through the door behind him and him showing up when she needs him at the hospital, not in some bedroom scene placed to make the relationshippers happy.
Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz brought back all of the things that made the X-Files a great show; it's not always about the creepy or fright factor, it's about 2 people trying to find answers and live in a world where morality is often an afterthought.
"The X-Files: I Want to Believe" can be enjoyed by both the die hard X-Philes as well as those who have no idea who Mulder and Scully are. Though, the subtle nuances may be missed by those not tuned in. And try not to laugh at the pencils in the ceiling.

The movie takes the reoccurring science and religion conflict within Skully to new heights, while not over doing it. The passion of finding the truth for Mulder is brought out of retirement and done in a very realistic way. The story itself was very engaging and well written. Definitely worth seeing whether you are a fan of the series or not.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you liked the show, you'll like this movie. Even if you didn't watch the show, you'll like this movie. It's really a drama-slash-scary movie with social commentary underlying it all. Top notch acting! Go see it! I'm going to go again it was so good!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was a little disappointing to me AND I'M A HARDCORE FAN OF THE SERIES AND THE FIRST MOVIE!
Firstly, if you're going to wait X number of years to release a sequel, when you finally DO get around to doing it, spend some time on the script and plot for goodness sakes. The first movie was about the government engineering bees to carry a virus to the populous at large and at the end we had the GIANT, AMAZING scene with a Million year-old spaceship exploding out of the ice and disappearing after an amazing rescue of Skully by Mulder. BUT THIS MOVIE, is just about a few murders in a small town and some scientific experiments that don't affect ANYONE really AT ALL. All this movie was is a new episode of the series. Plus there's this completely unconnected side story about a sick little boy that Skully is crazy to save when all it really does is detract from the main plot...probably because they writers knew that the main plot wasn't strong enough ALONE to carry a full movie.
Very sad.
Now for the good. Very nice performances by David Duchovney and Gillian Anderson. They still have that on-camera spark as their Mulder and Skully, most definitely. It's a shame that they had to bring it out in such a disappointing script.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
