Although it was fun to see Mulder and Scully together again, I left the theatre feeling that I had just watched an OK made for TV movie. There was no accustomed spark between Mulder and Scully. This was a murder mystery, and had nothing to do with the extraordinary, extraterrestrial (sp?) or the unexplained. X-Filer's Fans......Don't waste your time. Wait to see it on DVD.

The approach they took to this movie was totally different than what I expected. It was a lot more thought provoking and ambiguous. If you remember from the series, there were different episodes with different "flavors." They picked a more subtle flavor for this movie than they had for the previous movie. I also loved that they allowed Mulder and Scully to progress. I really believed that it was them these many years later. They had grown and matured, but it was still the characters. I thought the pacing and the suspense were good and they never let the tension down, I had no idea how it was going to end.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was like an extra long TV episode, but the problem is it was the kind of episode you might have just turned off. Too much religion, not enough aliens! Also rapper Xzibit as a lead FBI agent felt grossly out of place.

I genuinely liked the movie. The character development was amazing and satisfying. The movie didn't follow some stereotypical map where you meet characters, character develops problem, you meet bad guy etc. Instead it caused you to think..and laugh.

I am a huge X-Files fan, and I am very disappointed in this movie. It is competing with Indy IV for worst movie of the summer. It's unfortunate that this movie was made. I say this because people who weren't fans of the show who go to see this movie will be turned off by the movie and could very well miss out on the show.
The genius of the show was that there was something always unexplained. Without going into spoilers, there's nothing like that in this movie. The plot lines for involving Mulder in the story are weak and forced; Scully's are even less tenuous and after she gets herself and Mulder involved in the case, she spends the entire movie complaining.
The action is not particularly compelling, and the FBI agents as portrayed are annoying dullards. They take Mulder and Scully "on the case" without properly arming them or ensuring that "after ten years" they still have any idea of what they're doing, which is entirely implausible at best.
The backstory about how Mulder and Scully got where they are at this point in time is only hinted at and never fully explained, which could have made the story more compelling, but was maddeningly left out.
I'd really like to know what kind of test audience saw this movie - they had to have the IQ of turnips. Roger Ebert apparently gave this movie 4.5 stars - I'll let you draw your own comparison between him and a turnip.

...that the movie would get better. That there would be some suspense or other kind of excitement. That something related to the entire premise of the X-Files would make itself known. That the actors and talent behind the lens were doing it for more than just for a paycheck or contractual obligation. Mostly, I couldn't believe I spent nearly $50 for something that didn't even rival 42 minutes of the TV show.

Melodramatic, tedious and confusing. Like, why was the scientist grafting dog's heads in the first place? Was it a hobby, an interest he picked up during his residency? What possessed him to come to the middle of nowhere Canada to perform operations in a Winnebago? Was it just to help the psycho Russian organ transplant guy and his lover? And, speaking of psycho Russian organ transplant guy, if he was gay, why show him in the pool checking out the girl's bod if it's her head he was after? Red herring or gaff? Should have shown him spying on her combing her hair.

Being a die-hard fan of the X-Files and waiting 6 1/2 years for this movie, I had some pretty high hopes for the sequel, as I'm sure many other people did when they went opening day. Sorry to say I was left extremely disappointed. For the creator Chris Carter to keep this movie's storyline under lock and key for so long, you'd think that there would be some major, unbelievably entertaining and thrilling plot to the movie, but there wasn't. Honestly, I've seen regular X-Files episodes that were 10 times better than the movie (Memento Mori, Demons, Redux I & II, just to name a few). Not wanting to give anything away to those who have yet to see it, let me just say that there is a lot of repetition in dialogue between characters and not a lot of action, which is totally different from the first movie, which was filled with action and meaningful dialogue. Also, religion is a major basis of the plot, which was a surprise. Overall, it was good to see Mulder and Scully back in action again, but the movie seemed rushed and the script awkward. I expected more than this....

In preparation for this film, I watched all 9 seasons and the first movie. If you came into this expecting an old-fashioned X-File, that was your mistake. Mulder and Scully are no longer the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed agents they were in the first movie (released in 1998). They worked on the x-files for nine years and were beat down every step of the way. This movie picks up where neither of them have been in the FBI for around six years. This movie did a great job of showing how the aftermath of the x-files really messed them up (they've even lost a child). They have no one to trust but each other. Even then they have problems of compatibility, but they know they couldn't really be with anyone else. It also shows a parallel of how the FBI runs without them. Their ways of investigation are even MORE out-dated and out of the norm. They look tired. They were never able to really substantiate ANY of the cases they ever did, so I don't blame them. You have to look at the logical fifteen year time line this movie encompasses and the mental and physical toll it has taken on these characters to truly appreciate it; that's why I thought their emotions were beautiful. Kudos to David Duchovny and Giliian Anderson for reprising these roles exactly where they should be.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

the actual STORY in this movie IS Mulder and Scully-- not the crime or the "x file." It's about how the crime affects our 2 characters. I found it smart, interesting, and a perfect new chapter in The X Files world. A MUST SEE FOR X FILE FANS, especially those "shippers", and non X Files fans who are smart will find it interesting and entertaining.

I should start by admitting that I'm a huge X-Phile, so that definitely colors this review. I love Mulder and Scully, and the appeal of this movie to me has all along been just having the two of them on the screen again regardless of whatever case they might be investigating.
The Mulder/Scully interactions in this movie do not disappoint. The chemistry has grown and deepened, and every time Duchovny opened his mouth, I realized just how much I'd missed Mulder in particular. Spending time with these characters again and discovering how their lives had changed over the years was a joy. Not to mention the unexpected pleasure of seeing another familiar face from the show! And a few subtle shout-outs to various writers/producers from days gone by - clever.
However, the case itself felt like merely a placeholder - something to stitch together the fantastic Mulder and Scully scenes rather than standing on its own merits. The character of Father Joe provided an opportunity to examine some fascinating and serious issues of faith and forgiveness, but other aspects of the movie seemed less thought out and a bit more vague. The other characters were not as fleshed out and were therefore not as dynamic as Father Joe. Having said that, I never felt bored, though; I was just left with a few questions that I wish had been addressed a little more thoroughly. Additionally, visually, the film is gorgeous - the darkness and the snow added an eerie air to almost every scene.
I think there are a couple of issues here. I really believe that the marketing push behind this film is doing it a great injustice. This is a great, quiet, thoughtful film. You'll still be thinking about some of the themes as you walk out. The problem arises from the fact that those involved with the film are marketing it as a)cross-over friendly (you don't have to be an X-Files fan to enjoy this); b) a scary/thriller type movie.
While I don't think you absolutely *have* to be an X-Files fan to understand the film, I'm just not sure how much enjoyment a non-fan would get out of it. The interaction between Mulder and Scully draws on that wealth of history between them; I can't imagine watching the movie without the benefit of that knowledge and still relating to it on as emotional a level. When Scully and Mulder are onscreen together again for the first time in the movie, I'll confess to getting choked up. There were echoes of their very first meeting in his basement FBI office that made the scene resonate, but again, someone without that familiarity of the series wouldn't "get" that scene. I would think ultimately that would detract from the overall experience, but it's incredibly hard for me to try to discern what my own reaction would be if I were stripped of all that show history.
As for the scary aspect - there are a few moments that are somewhat scary, but this does not have even remotely the level of intensity of say, The Dark Knight. There was a level of menace throughout that entire movie that kept me on edge. Anyone going into this expecting something similarly heart-poundingly intense or with car crashes and explosions and noise and fire or whatever is going to be greatly disappointed. That is not this movie, and I think giving people the wrong idea of what sort of a film this is will do this movie a disservice.
Chris Carter has said before that the X-Files was ultimately a search for God, and in some ways, this movie continues that theme. You're left pondering the darkness in men's hearts, the ripple effects of that darkness, and the possibility of God's forgiveness.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

First of all, it was refreshing to see Gillian and David on the screen again. That's the positive part. This movie was weak in concept and very predictable. I kept saying to myself, "surely, they're not going to...", and in a few moments, they did the very thing I thought they were going to do (but should not have). I won't spoil it here, yet. This movie would have made a mediocre TV episode had it been cut down to 40 minutes (allowing for commercials). As a feature-length film, it was boring and mildly confusing. It was only confusing because what I thought they would have done to make it a movie more in the X-Files theme was left out or ignored. [Spoiler warning...] [Spoiler warning...] [Spoiler warning...] [Spoiler warning...] Why would an FBI agent (the one first abducted) not know how to GET BACK IN THE CAR? Why was it so easy for Scully to convince the hermit, Mulder, to take on the crusade? The black helicopter seen could have been cooler -- especially if they had landed in Mulder's back yard after he agreed to go. The priest looked so much like a raggedy John Cleese (Dr. Brackish Okun from Independence Day), it was distracting. Why was there no paperwork involved in Mulder's FBI pardon? Why were Mulder and Scully not deputized? Why were there so few agents (and no police) on the "raid"? At the raid, why did the special agent in charge Whitney not let a flunky-agent stay outside with Mulder? Why did Mulder not carry his phone or even make some well-placed GPS tracking calls on his way up to the bad-guy's house? When Mulder was dialing his phone, was the name "Gillian" the one chosen? Why was he tailing so closely? Why was Mulder unarmed the entire time (civilian or not)? Do all AB negative blood-type's wear medic-alert bracelets? Why did the bad guys NOT test Mulder's blood to see if he was a compatible MALE body donor? Why were they trying to save THAT mutant anyway? Would Scully have been interested in the bad-guy's medical work? Could she have learned some great surgical techniques in a non-sterile environment? Why was Skinner's hair so raggedy? Why did Scully hesitate so long before saying she was ready? Why was the patient allowed to see that? What were we supposed to gather from the "boat" scene after the credits? Oh? You didn't stay? Was that a conclusion or just a "nugget" for loyal fans? ...or was it a wave goodbye?

"Unlike the previous poster, I thought it was plenty scary. I was jumping all over the place in my seat at unexpected moments. And it had more gore than I'm used to with the XFiles cos on tv they had to be tamer (back when XFiles was on anyway). So, some of the movie was watched thru the fingers of my hands :-) I was with my 29 yr old nephew who loved those same parts of the film that I refer to above. So, to a 29 yr old guy, it wasn't tame. This may not matter to someone who didn't watch or wasn't an avid fan of the show, but I loved how they seamlessly integrated and re-introduced a lot of that which was a part of Mulder and Scully's persona on the show. For instance: Mulder still eats sunflower seeds. Mulder's sister is mentioned more than once. The poster "I Want to Believe" is still in his office. Scully still wears her cross necklace. The quick repartee particularly from Mulder. Scully and Mulder still have that same chemistry--only deeper. I did think the storyline was gruesome but then so were some of the stories of the XFiles. There was plenty of "Scully and Mulder" and their relationship to each other. I loved seeing them work together and where they are personally these 6 years later. That said, this wasn't up to Chris Carter and writers best story (or maybe it was the filming/editing that wasn't quite up to XFiles standards). I'd give it an 8 out of 10 stars. Okay: 8 1/2 :-) I always loved the music on the show and was not disappointed this time either. There is one scene where the XFiles theme music was the instrument to a spontaneous, unexpected laugh (really laugh) out loud response. Scully and Mulder are about to enter an FBI office. On the left of the door is a picture of President Bush and on the right of the door is a picture of J. Edgar Hoover. You'll have to see the movie to understand why it was so funny :-) Bring on more XFiles movies, Chris Carter! Nancy" p.s. The previous reviewer referred to: "the psycho-religious conversation about believing in things that aren't what they seem.." That's pure XFiles: two sides of the same coin. Mulder view and Scully's view of the same topic. Each sees a different side. Classic XFiles!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I really liked the movie. It was so good to see Mulder and Scully together again!! That's what I went to see and I was very happy with the story, even if it was a little off the norm for them. It was a few years later after all!!! Go! Enjoy!

Admittedly, I am a major X-Files fan and have been waiting for years for this movie to come out, so when they advertised a release date, I knew I would be at the premier. This movie was nothing like the first one. It didn't center on the alien/conspiracy portions of the show (which weren't ever my favorite anyway) and instead took a dark walk into the paranormal (just like the first two seasons of the show typically did). It had a similar feel to Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose. It contains very dark content and is extremely suspenseful. The rug doesn't get pulled out from under the viewer too many times, so maybe the other reviewer was disappointed by that, but I found the movie to be exciting and fulfilling, answering some of the questions I have wondered many times since the show ended. Also, it is SO awesome to see Mulder and Scully interacting in what would be nine years later since the show ended. The movie was also careful to make sure that non-X-Files fans wouldn't be left out, making sure to at least partially explain most things that were brought up from their past. There are some really funny parts, one involving George W., as well as Mulder's typical wry jokes. I loved it so much and I would highly recommend you see it on the big screen. You will be glad you did.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I was disappointed. It was a long, drawn out movie that was predictable. I was hoping for all of the twists and turns of the series but found this boring. I couldn't wait for it to be over. There was potential but unfortunately it really flopped. Parts were funny in the beginning then the humor went away and it was just DRAMA.

It was good to see Sully and Mulder back in action. I have beeen an X-Files fan from the very beginning. The movies plot fit right in line with the season episodes. It was also good to see that Chris Carter did not repeat the previous movie plot and instead took it in a different direction. For those whom did not like the movie, all I can say is that you are not a true X-Files fan!!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Why did they make this movie? It wasn't even as good as a regular weekly episode. I am a big fan and I just found this movie dull and the plot weak and suprisingly mundane. I kept thinking it was just leading to the real plot, but it never went anywhere.

Loved the series! So I expected at least a good movie. Got a slow, plodding too long TV show. There's a reason why advance copies weren't allowed out. Too bad it was soo bad!
The most positive comments I heard after the show was from an XFiles fan who said "it wasn't thaat bad." She's wrong...it was.

I was worried when they said it would be a stand alone, but this was a great movie. We saw development in Scully and Mulder's relationship on a meaningful level and it was connected to the action of the plot. The storyline was creepsville! If you're a true fan of the series--not just the myth arc, or not just the big budget hollywood original movie--you will appreciate this film. It could bring new fans to the show, who enjoy smart creepy style suspense.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

If you were a fan of the series The X-Files, you will surely know that often the scariest things are what you are never shown, and ultimately, sometimes what you can never see because they are within you. This movie speaks to these fears, and at the heart of it all this time around stands Doctor Dana Scully.
X-Files fans everywhere would cheer at the thought, but that being said, if you have never seen the show, this movie still has a lot to offer if you enjoy a movie that gives you action, darkness and romance, without dumbing anything down. This movie does what a lot of other recent entertainment has neglected to do. It lets you think.
Scully, who has always tried to cling to her Catholic faith, has her trust in God challenged and the rock of the foundation of her relationship with her former FBI partner, Fox Mulder, shaken to its core.
Shot in vast, frozen landscapes, with a villian more psychopath and less alien, less paranormal than some might expect, the film plays like a good, old-fashioned, scary movie. There are plenty of 'gross' moments, but, as it has always been in the X-Files, most of it is not thrust in your face, but planted, like a seed of an idea to form in your thoughts as you sit, wide eyed and waiting, to see what happens next.
Chris Carter, creator or the X-Files, gives us here a logical look at where the couple would be at the present time, six years since we last saw them on the small screen. His attempt is well thought out and he remains steadfastly true to the characters and the X-Files universe he created. Mulder and Scully are as beautifully tragic and humanly imperfect as ever. They do not gloss over or deny their past--which would have been a great disservice to loyal fans--and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson prove they are still capable of bringing their now famous, other-worldly connection to the table. We are treated to the smoldering looks and hints of sexuality that kept the series going all those years, but again Carter trusts us enough to know that this seed, too, grows best in the warm, dark soil of his audiences' minds and hearts.
To catch even just another glimpse of these characters is almost enough to satisfy the show's steadfast fans. Almost, because this dedicated group is known to be largely intelligent and highly opinionated. For this movie to be a success, it needed to stand alone as a story, but pay honest homage to the place and people from which it came. They had to nail it.
They did just that.
I left the movie satisfied, but wanting more. My mind was ticking. It felt like many Sunday nights, once upon a time when I'd hang on until the final "I Made This" that marked the end of the show's credits. (Speaking of which, if you see this movie, you'll probably want to stay until the end of the credits.)
We might never be so lucky as to get a show that nails it week after week quite as well as The X-Files did, but I dare to hope there will be more movies like this to come.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
