Although some of the milieu of the original series is captured, the pacing and cinematography were like just another TV episode. Only one other character besides three from the original series had any depth at all. A few deaths reaffirm Scully's and Mulder's nebulous belief system and purpose, to be frozen in time for all posterity.

I kept waiting for something to happen....but it never did. I was OK with the fact that it had nothing to do with aliens (many of the TV episodes were that way), but there wasn't anything super-natural or even exciting enough to keep you on the edge of your seat! With what it costs to go to a movie these days, save yourself from the rip-off and wait for it to show on cable if you MUST see it at all.

Very refreshing to finally see a film that doesn't rely on special effects or explosions and fights. As a fan of the series, the film does an excellent job of catching you up with the characters and their lives since the show went off the air, and wil not leave you disappointed. If you never watched the series, the movie does a good job as a stand alone mystery/thriller.
The only negative I have is that there is a sense throughout the film that the producers are holding back and trying to contain themselves, in order to appeal to the non-fans of the series. This story begs to "break out", but the producers and director sit on it. Perhaps now they have established the charactors for the non-fans of the series they can "break out" if/when there is a follow up.
Very nice little tip of the hat to the fans of the series appears at the VERY END of the roll of credits.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe is an excellent movie, capturing the essence of its long-time main characters with their inside jokes. This was definitely not an upset to dedicated followers of the series who have come to understand the characters and all the situations they have had to face.
They really did a great job of showing us how Mulder and Scully have changed as well as reminding us what makes them the unique individuals that have captivated their fans from day one.
If you are bent on whether or not to see it in theaters, GO AND SEE IT - for yourself. It made me hope (and want to believe) that there will be more X-Files movies in the future.

I am a huge X-Files fan and have been waiting for this movie for way too many years. It simply did not work. The things that made the series so wonderful such as the relationships between the numerous characters weren't there. Most of the characters weren't even there! Skinner had a scene or two at the end of the movie. Scully appeared irrational, if not downright unstable.
The case that brought Mulder out-of-the-woodwork was dark and disturbing but too unbelievable and uninteresting to be the basis for a good movie.
I do not feel like this was an X-Files movie. There were some feeble attempts to make it seem like it was by mentioning some psychics in previous episodes (stand alone episodes that are truly worth relishing) and Mulder's sister but it only made me wish I was at the theatre watching the original television series or the first X-Files movie instead of this embarrassing and tedious attempt to bring back Mulder and Scully.

Can't believe the previous guy walked out. on this movie. Maybe it wasn't violent enough for him. I found the concept of the movie interesting, and definitely worth seeing. I have been thinking about this movie since I saw it on opening night..
If you are a fan of the show, you wil definitely like it. I found the interaction between Mulder and Scully entertaining, and along with the easter eggs in the movie, don't forget to wait to the end of the credits to see a thank you to the fans.
The only drawback in the movie is that it was slow in one part of it. However, I also thought Xibit did a good job in this movie too.

In a world were movie goers expect only over the top action and over-produced epics it was nice to see that they treated the movie like a regular X-Files episode. As a fan of the series I loved seeing Moulder and Scully together and my wife and I really enjoyed the film. If you are a thinking person and don't depend on over-produced computer generated films that dominate our present era then you will enjoy this movie.

Unlike the first film, which I found intermittently successful, Mulder and Skully's relationship is front and center here, and it delivers. In spades. Yet, like most of the more memorable episodes of the series, this story poses questions about faith and redemption amid acts of profound sacriifice. The X-Files was always a series more rooted in religious and spiritual themes than in the masquerade of a conspiracy show. As someone who loved the original series, I found the film sensitive and moving and deeply satisfying. Thanks, Chris Carter.

Great to have the X-Files back in the swing of things. This is a film that is a little different than I expected with the conspiracies and aliens. It dealt with the other part of the x-files that talks about those deep ontological questions about life, the afterlife, ourselves, and our deep connection to the world around us.
There is a lot of that in this movie, as well as a psychological theme about the evolution of teh 16 year relationship that Mulder and Scully share. Their new communication and comfort with their life is interesting to say the least and refreshing after years of pined up innuendo and casual comments, its great to see the writers to write the characters in that comfort level.
Its different than I expected but still good. I'll def see it again in theaters and look forward to the special features on the DVD

This movie would be fine if it were a normal, two-part episode on TV, but since you're charging me $10 to see it, it was disappointing. I'd rather have seen some development to the overall X-Files plotline, like Moulder's sister, Moulder & Scully's child, evidence of alien involvement or something like that. This movie frusterated me like the episodes when the show was on TV that didn't advance the plotline at all. They were interesting episodes on their own, but I'd be disappointed that they didn't get us anywhere.

i agree with the other reviewers who stated that the movie was bland. my choice adjective is boring. the concept was good but the delivery lack pizazz and did not keep my interest after the first 30 minutes. i only stayed because i kept hoping that the film would magically get better...as it never did. i would say that my expectations for the movie were moderate and i was more curious and interested to see what it was going to be all about than anything else. i will say, as a positive, i was glad that it really was made for those fans of the tv show. it was nice not to have to sit thru a lot of back story as plot development.

I am a fan of the X-files and have seen the first movie. I came in expecting the sequel to be better than the first. However, I came out disappointed. The movie's plot wasn't thrilling and the psychic's look reminded me of the crazy-looking scientist from Independence Day. Lacked the excitement of the series...
Story wasn't too great, but had its moments of thrill.
I somehow felt that the 1 hr 15 mins or so for the movie was too long, it appeared too long... Compare that to "The Dark Knight" that didn't feel like too long event at 2 hr and 30 mins.
Gillian Anderson has lost her soft looks -- too much exercising? or just old age?
If you go for the movie, do stay back till the credits run out... you will see a little something nice :-)

The 3 stars rating is more for lifetime achievement and not caving and making a really cheesy flick as most are these days. The acting was great, though some of the Mulder-Scully dialog was badly written I thought. Some really interesting premises and characters, the pedophile priest turned psychic for example, that could have been way more developed.
All things considered, Chris Carter stayed true to form: he didn't try to make the movie into something else, it was unmistakenly X-files, predictably with less suspense and intrigue than the mid 90's version.
Worth watching for the true fan, as a bonus there is a 2 headed dog, a funny 'current events moment', and oh yeah I almost forgot:
AT LEAST WILL FARRELL ISN'T IN IT!!! Whoo HOO.

Any fan of the X-Files will be very happy with this film. The plot is well written, its quick paced and the film flows well from start to finish. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson revive their roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as if they'd never left them. I was very, very disappointed by this movie. Obviously, this sequel was less about the X-Files and more about the romance between Scully and Mulder. Boring plot and a few absolutely pointless characters. Watch the series, rent the first movie and just settle with the fact that the X-Files will never be closed. This is one final installment that should never have been.

I really liked this. Although it is "user friendly" for anyone who has never seen an episode of the series, I don't know that I would recommend it for anyone who disliked the series. It was much more like a first season episode, free standing, nothing to do with the Alien Abduction plot that engulfed the later seasons. I thought the movie took some bold chances in being "headier" than most summer action films. Clearly there's been a lot of "water under the bridge' for the two main characters and that was there, but not commented on and I appreciated that. Lots of subtext regarding the battle between religion and science that I liked. Some folks never like mixing action and politics, but I loved it. In fact, I liked this MUCH better than the first big screen X-Files and more than the later episodes of the series when Mulder and Scully were simply not even there. Welcome back old friends, I hope there is an X-Files 3.

I am a HUGE X-files fan. Have the box set of ALL the seasons/episodes. I LOVED the first movie.
So I was VERY excited and anticipating this 2nd movie. I was very prepared to forgive alot.
But-
Wow-the movie wasn't as good as the first one. And it wasn't even as good as the best series episodes.
It was the "monster" variety. More of a horror/slasher movie than an X-file.
I was hoping for more paranormal, Esp, psychic, and unexplained phenomena.
There was NONE of that. It was just a horror movie. I left feeling disappointed, grossed out and icky. But mostly let down.
I never liked their monster movie episodes.
I love X-files because they write great MYSTERIES. Investigation etc.

It was great to see Fox and Sculley again!
But the story line was simple and weak. Serial killer wants body parts. Priest may/or may not have psychic ability. Sculley may/or may not save a sick boy. End.
The TV shows had better story lines.
The first movie was great. This was not. I hope they make more movies though, I love the characters.
