This is the best movie I've seen this year. The dialogue, the acting, the cinematography, the styling - all brilliantly understated to a powerful effect. And the message is well crafted - our government has created a racist police state on the faulty premise of fighting terrorism. Although the underlying truths are quite tragic, the writer/director skillfully interweaves moments of real humor and levity. Go see this movie.

"The Visitor" has its one surprise quite early in the film, and it's all downhill from there. Without giving away any important plot sequences, the protagonist is a lonely widower/professor in a New England college who becomes involved with illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa. The writers and director miss no opportunity to bad mouth the U.S. because of our immigration laws and portrays the illegals as blameless and victimized to a fault. They never explain why these people came here in the first place, but a favorite line of dialogue, repeated several times, is, "It's not your fault." The performances by the immigrants are believable as far as they go, but there is a persistent lack of background. I'd recommend a good drink at the nearest bar instead of spending $10 on this movie.

One of the truest movies I have ever seen. Understated, real performances and dialogue that sounds natural. The actors play their parts as if they are being themselves. The themes of the movie are personal and while the ending has an element of sadness, it inspires. The location shots are great too. Not the New York of the rich and spoiled but the one that belongs to the people. Just a beautiful movie.

The casting was excellent. It was good to see a talented character actor given wider scope.
There were a lot of themes that stayed with you: the complexities of immigration, moving on after the death of a partner, expanding personal connections to include ethnic diversity and friends of different generations, standing up for what you believe is right.
