The story provokes a comfortable, professional, secure audience sitting in an air-conditioned independent movie house to recognize marginalized people, illegal immigrants, as individuals with strengths and skills to be learned from. Most of us, I believe, feel a similar, debilitating impotence and "learned helplessness" to Walter's as he faced the privatized prison industry that has been created to manage the chaotic fallout of US immigration, national security, and foreign policy blunders. The traditional “enlightenment” institutions of academia, democratic politics and due process have been steadily degraded as corporate globalization, backed by privatized police forces and US military might, dehumanizes everyone in its path. The movie re-humanizes the world that was fragmented into irrational paranoias by 9/11, and uses drumming as a symbol of the revitalized individual and collective energy we all need to generate, somehow, to repudiate the brutish, dehumanizing powers of the fear-driven police state.

We really enjoyed The Visitor. Richard Jenkins pulls off the professorial, depressed, middle aged man that regains direction unexpectedly. Hiam Abbass is very likable as well. The Visitor leaves you wondering how it will all end. And at the end, were not quite sure. It provokes introspection, in relation to our government, and how its actions affect the individual(s). A good movie I would highly recommend.

"The Visitor" is an appealing movie based on "normal" lives as well as the basic human desire to simply live in piece. It is not a preachy movie but effectively shows the need for greater cross-cultural understanding nad acceptance. My wife and I loved this movie. This movie worked on a number of levels without beating you over the head with a message. The character development on each of the major characters was excellent. We see the humanity in all of them no matter what their nationality, color or background. The movie also works on the political, social, romantic and humor level that is rare in cinema today. Finally the movie's storyline flows naturally and never feels forced. Go see this movie if you like quality films!!

What I enjoyed most about this movie was the transformation in the main character's view of his own life. When he finally confesses to Muma, Tarik's mom, that in his current life, he just pretends to be busy, he is describing a lifestyle or state of affairs many of us can identify with.
The movie also depicts the realities that immigrants have to live with. Not having committed any crime, Tarik is imprisioned, purely based on racial profiling, and is deported. This is a sad consequence of our current government's deplorable policies on immigration.

The film has much to commend it. Richard Jenkins does an outstanding job as Walter, and Hiam Abbass and Haaz Sleiman turn in very good supporting performances. The screenplay is good in a subtle way, and the acting brings it to life. Tom McCarthy did a great job casting. He has succeeded in his attempt to put a face on the immigration issue. I recommend this film wholeheartedly.

My husband and I were both impressed with the way in which this simple yet very rich story was told. I went initially for the drumming because I recd a djembe for a recent birthday but the drumming, while very exciting for me, was secondary to the moving and realistic story. The acting was superb all around.

A very touching movie about a man who learns to feel again and to participate in life even as the lives of others are in crisis. The issue of illegal immigration is handled well--no preaching but a clear depiction of the impact of our laws on people who come here for a better life.
