This film managed to pull it off. I was nervous in the first few scenes that it would simply be a poorly acted, low budget period attempt, but then came the goose (literally.) From that scene on, this was a great and subtlety hilarious, even moving film. Definitely not for everyone, but even a layperson could be delighted by Kinski's nuanced performance.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Review 2 for Nosferatu the Vampyre
One of the WORST movies I've ever sat through

Even allowing for the goofiness of the genre, this is a bad bad BAD movie. Herzog, Schmerzog -- since he wrote AND directed, it's all his fault. The characters (such as they are) speak nearly-nonsensical lines in a vacuum, barely reacting to one another. It seems to have been scored by a twelve-year old who had only three records to work with. Kinski's Count isn't really scary, he's just weird (and NOT in that interesting Gary Oldman way). How any of these people were allowed to work again, after this, is the TRUE mystery of this film. Had it been possible on this site, I would have given it NO stars. Contributes absolutely nothing to the Dracula cannon.
