Saw "Blue Valentine" on a friend's recommendation and was totally disappointed. If you're the type a person who enjoys watching a marriage that was doomed from the very beginning fall apart, then this is the movie for you. Too much misery for me and no redeeming storyline, either. Chances are that these characters will be no better off in their future relationships either. Wish I knew what the director was trying to convey.

I saw this movie with my husband a few days ago. I have to say this is by far one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I was appalled and sickened by the abortion scene.. they definitely stayed true to the procedure. The acting was mediocre at best, and there was absolutely no storyline. I won't recommend this movie to anyone. Waste. of. time. I only rated this one star because I had to give a rating. If I had it my way, I wouldn't give one.

This movie definitely made me think twice about wanting to get married in the near future. It's a sad tale about one person who is so in love with their spouse, but their spouse is too broken to love back. I wish things like this wouldn't happen in real life, but we all know it does.

The transformation of the characters' looks after 5 years of married life is too drastic and a bit unrealistic, though. Despite the hype surrounding this limited-release, originally rated NC-17 for [gasp] "emotional sex" scenes, Blue Valentine lacks a lot. Most notably, Ryan Gosling's hair and his sex appeal were both MIA. He looked like David Arquette times 10, drunk and humorless. Ever since the Notebook, he's served as my No. 1 celebrity crush, but I just can't delete his receding hairline, chain smoking and terrible tattoo of "The Giving Tree" from my mind. A lover, not a fighter, I was hoping for somekind of love story or at least something w/Ryan ripping off his shirt in the rain. But nope, a solid 95% of this movie involves fighting, drinking, arguing, awkwardly forced sex, violence, and lots of fighting. It's a poor mix of 500 Days of Summer and The Break-Up.

Even great performances and smart editing could not help me overlook the overwhelming feeling that I have traveled this road before, for better or worse. I think that too many parts of the story/character development are not explored and too much is left for guessing. The only thing both I, and my husband, could say with absolute certainty is, this film never deserved the NC-17 rating it first got slapped with--although it did create some strong buzz. This film received a lot of hype, and overall, I was drawn to the storyline and actors, and left wondering what went wrong with them. But, the more I think about it, the answer to that question is obvious. Contrary to what many have said, I think, though depressing, it is an OK date film. If anything, it will encourage couples to not project, to take their time and get to know each other, and to take care of each other.

The movie follows a somewhat parallel story line of the same relationship from beginning to end about 10 years apart. I think it exposes a lot more of what the reality of a relationship is than many movies have or can, which is why I recommend it.
I would definitely have liked a little more focus on the more mature relationship and what lead to the situation they are in, but I think the movie aims to have the viewer infer what the reasons are.
Overall, thumbs up.

A great example of what goes wrong in so many marriages. Shows the pain that comes along with forgetting how to accept and forgive others. Very real. Perhaps it focuses a bit too much on what not to do in a relationship, rather than how to make a relationship work. Still, worth seeing.

The acting was great but there wasn't really a good story here (I agree with the previous poster) and it was a major downer of a movie. It is probably a realistic portrayal of a relationship crumbling apart...no one really knows what is going on...but I don't really want to sit through that!

High expectations based on "buzz." Sorely disappointed. Didn't care about either of these characters, the script - um was there one? Good example, the fight scene in the doctor's office. Who wrote that? Or was it improvisational? If so, next time give the actors a script. And where was the set decorator? Asleep or on drugs? Scenes in "Future Room" sucked. Could barely see what they were filming and couldn't tell if they were in the bedroom or bathroom for most of the scene. Overall, I just hated this film not only did I feel I wasted my money, I also wasted my time. Stay away from this film! Go buy a couple of lattes with the money you'll save, sit down and talk about GOOD films. Trust me, you won't put this one in your top ten lists unless you're counting your top ten "these movies sucked" list!

Saw BV at Sundance earlier this year. Incredible. Ryan and Michelle pour everything into this film. Considering what was going on with MW at the time, she had come through a lot, sort of like peeling back the protection and exposing the wires. Gosling's performance should earn him an Oscar nod. Kudos to director Derek Cianfrance for staying true to his vision from start to finish, from script, actors, and what ended up on the screen. Anyone who has struggled in a relationship will find this almost claustrophobic in its accurate portrayal of a marriage/relationship whose wheels are coming off. There is no relief 'cept inward and downward through our own hearts. Well done
