i heard a radio host today griping about how there wasn't a hero that swooped in and saved the day, and no transformation from evil to good. but that's what you get in mainstream hollywood, formulaic, feel good movies.
i've really enjoyed movies like this and no country for old men (which was better) that don't spell out everything, leave questions unanswered, and don't follow the script of forcing a happy, unrealistic ending.
"i don't like to explain myself" is what daniel said, and that's what a man like him would say instead of spilling his guts and telling wah-wah stories from his childhood.
i thought the dueling characters of the oil man and the preacher were great, because they started out and ended up in very similar circumstances. it was a harsh portrayal of reality for what happens when you behave the way they did, but without all the finger-wagging lessons.
and as far as the soundtrack goes, i loved it. yes, it was like nails on a chalkboard, as someone else said, but it's in-your-face (and ears) grittiness is what made me feel in the moment. it put me on the edge of my seat, way better than the subtle stuff you usually get.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

There Will Be Blood is an unforgettable movie experience. The score done by Radiohead's Greenwood, is frightening and masterfully done, and the acting alone by DD-Lewis is enough reason to see the movie. A shoe in for best actor. The length is long (2:38), but if you get caught up in DD- Lewis like i did, the movie will fly by, leaving you wanting to see what happens next to him. The overall plot is done well and is directed beautifully. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a real life movie, not a Hollywood hyped one.

Both my husband and I found out after this long boring movie was over that we both were praying for it to end halfway through. It was very slow, the soundtrack was the most annoying noise I have ever encountered in a movie, and if there was a plot, we couldn't figure it out. Don't waste your money or your time.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

dreadful movie. painfully slow and boring. and i like long movies. void of plot and substance. dont know what movie the positive reviewers saw. most of the plot threads had no point at all (ie the deaf son, the evangelist, the half brother). awful.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

I heard about this movie through a friend at work and after he described the plot to me i was interested, but once he said Daniel Day-Lewis, there was no way i was not gonna see it. And man was I completely blown away. Amazing performances all around. Soundtrack created great atmosphere and tension(gave me goosebumps half the time). Almost 3 hours long and i actually wish it couldve been longer. I love movies that have the sociopathic two-heads-of-the-same-coin confrontation. Two eccentric madmen stripping away all elements of humanity from eachother leading up to the gritty disturbing ending. Absolutely loved it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Why do people go see movies that they don't understand and feel inclined to write poor reviews on sites like this? No, this is not a Hollywood popcorn feel-good movie. It is an intense, dark, moody, art film. And, it is executed perfectly. I don't get how people don't understand that going in. Just go see National Treasure again, or maybe rent Transformers. Don't write about something with which you have no experience. Just because you don't get it, or it made you feel "depressed," does not make it a bad film.
Day-Lewis' performance alone makes this a must see.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

An excellent character study of two sociopaths, the oilman and the preacher. The oilman discovers the shallowness of his secularism and the preacher falls prey to his lack of faith.

This was the most ungratifying movie I've seen in a long time. I was anxiously waiting for a good story teamed with a brilliant actor and ended up shifting in my seat and looking at my watch. Long, tedious and with a horrible soundtrack, the word slow can't even describe the direction. Daniel Day Lewis, by far one of our best actors, plays an unsympathetic oilman without much conscience. Listening to Charlie Rose describe this film he said that it was in the same league as Giant......save your money, go rent Giant and be entertained. This was a waste of money and an afternoon.

This is an awful movie...it is just too long for what happens...very boring to say the least...there were some good points in the moving, but not enough for me to recommend this movie to ANYONE....I found myself dozing a few times....thought it would be alot better since the trailors looked good...and the acting was supposed to be good as well.....an actor can be good, but if he is in an awful movie, I still wouldn't waste my time seeing it....

The acting is great, but the movie could have been shortened by at least an hour. The producer and the film makers were trying to hard to impress everyone. Don't bother unless you can see it on DVD and fast forward the slow parts. A picture of a very black soul with a deeply disturbing ending.

2 hours and 38 minutes? It could have been 3 hours in length and I would
still be asking for more. The visual fabric of the movie transcends the
medium and the same can be said of the acting. DDL's Plainview is both
comically and tragically rich in terms of physical nuance and
psychological depth. The movie abounds with performace and talent. It
renders an accurate portrait of humanity as slick and slippery as the
substance they we drilling for.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was the most awful experience I've ever had at the movies, all around me people were either snoring, anxiously shifting or actually leaving. I've never seen so many people walk out on a single showing in my life, and half of our party ended up doing the same. They simply couldn't take the dragging timing & total lack of interesting plot development, things just kept getting worse and worse but somehow not allowing the viewers to become involved with the characters at all. The reason everyone finally gave up hope and walked out was the gratingly arty soundtrack that contributed a sort of nails-on-chalkboard feeling to the whole experience. Half our party (and seemed about half the theater) preferred to go stand outside in the pouring rain and wait for it to be over rather than suffer the experience in the theater for one single minute longer. I have never in my life wanted my eleven bucks back so bad (not to mention 2 hours of my life).
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Not connecting the dots does not make for a good movie. Has the reviewers of this country lost their senses or standards. A story is something that is witnessed. Not saying... I don't like men... and we buy it. We have to see it, show us examples. Lets see the interaction of why he hates men, what they did. Where his mother/father were. Why he was so cold etc? All of this and more are not dealt with so when he comes off with this bizarre behavior it seems not just odd but ... what just happened?!? It like seeing a car accident but you never saw the other car coming or the driver being inattentive. Most of the Day Lewis character was like that. Meaness and you're not quite sure exactly why. And the character says... I don't like people but again THIS IS A FILM. A STORY. Lets see a few examples WHY YOU DON'T LIKE PEOPLE. Not mention is 20 minutes before you kill someone. Just in time for Cover Your Behind for Story Writing 101.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

One of the Best Pictures out there, An instant Classic. The movie length is 2hrs and 30 min. but it never fails to keep it thrilling. I wanted to know what happens next. The pace of the movie is consistent and perfect timing. With great sound scoring, the action leads you to the next level. Daniel Day Lewis is a sure winner for best actor as he mastered the character's life, behavior, and background. He is very consistent in every way. The story builds up from where he started to strike oil to his success and the changes in his life and what he has to prioritize. I do not want to give away anything about the movie but it will surely impress you.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
