I read the unfavorable reviews on this site before I went to this movie and thought surely they were wrong. But they were NOT! I truly wish I had not wasted my time, and my money, on this movie. Other people walked out in the middle of the movie and I wish I could have convinced my husband to go, too. At the end of the movie a storm briefly prevented us from leaving the theater. While we waited, a conversation broke out among the people who had just left this movie. The majority of the group hated it too. -- It was slow. It was boring. The scenes were disjointed and confusing. None of the characters (except perhaps the child) made any connection with the audience. The plot was weak. Instead of dialogue, there were uncomfortably long scenes where the characters simply looked at each other or their knees. And the ending was absolutely ABSURD. AMC I would really like my $9 back.

The movie was pretty lengthy but it kept you interested for the entire film though.Some parts were just very slow and not filled with any kind of excitement.The story line itself was kind of weak.My advice to anyone who is gonna see it,hope you can sit still for that long.The 2 hrs and 38 mins. felt more like 5.

I've yet to see a bad P. T. Anderson film, and this film continues his pattern of high artistic vision. I can't say this is his best work as far as creating characters that one truly cares about, but the scenes and themes stayed with me for days. I was completely drawn into this world of oil drilling, and the interfering sacerdotal rube. The religious themes were even more true and disturbing. Anderson returns to the issue of madness in the main character, but here it is much darker than in "Punch Drunk Love". That film was Adam Sandler's best work, and Anderson also gets a best performance from Daniel Day Lewis. Anderson films usually leave me feeling uplifted, and I feared the darkness of this movie would be dispiriting. He does go too far at times, into cruel violence. However I did find myself cheering at a Michael Clayton-like moment.
As a film school graduate, I'm certain this film will be much discussed in such places for many years. I think this is the third best film of the year.

This is a great story set in a place I know really well. I thought it was accurate, in detail, and stunning is presentation, and far above 90% of todays films overall. Go see it. It is not easy to describe but contains some of the best performances I've ever seen. 5 Stars

Absolutely incredible story. Daniel Day Lewis nails it with the best performance I've ever seen. Those folks calling this the worst movie they've ever seen are the ones that keep Warner Brothers in business. Movies like this are definetly not for you people. Stay home and wait for "Spiderman 4".

The opening scenes paint a picture of a lone desperate character (Daniel Plainview, a “oil man,” played by Daniel Day-Lewis) engaged in a dangerous occupation in a remote terrain. A fuse is set, then an explosion followed by bodily injury. Our interest and curiosity is aroused from the start. The dangerous situations of the opening scenes are perhaps second only to the happenings of Wile E. Coyote and his Acme Co. "Rocked Sled," but this film is no comedy. This is drama. Day-Lewis projects a seemingly complex, driven, and intense character. His control of body language, tone of voice, the look in his eye and the expressions on his face continue to hold our attention throughout the film. Paul Dano delivers a supporting role (Eli, the local evangelist) that complements the lead. The look in Dano’s eyes, and his facial expression, when his character first meets the oil man played by Day-Lewis projects the look of someone who believes they know a truth unknown to the rest of us – 90% soft smile and 10% smirk. At that point a power struggle is established and the audience is set for a Rocket Sled ride. Each time someone sets-off Plainview’s fuse there will be drama -- explosions of anger followed by bodily injury.

Everybody should just give there 11$ to the ticket taker and have them kick you in the balls for 3 hours, that's how horrible this movie was. Daniel Day was good but when the movie sucks that bad not even a good actor can save the movie. And for all those good reviews about it being artsy ,anybody could make this movie with a camera and some bad music in the background. One of the worst movies ever!!!

I, too, was reluctant to see this movie after some of the movie-goers bad reviews. Let me say that it is my opinion that the bad reviews came from folks who went to this movie expecting something else entirely (maybe the title threw them a little). This movie is outstanding! Completely underrated in this venue (movietickets.com user reviews). Highly recommended. Very intense. WOW!

After reading all of the reviews, both good and bad, we were unsure about seeing it. We chose to form our own opinion on this movie, so we went to see it. It was excellent! A long movie, maybe not the music that people want to hear, but it fit the movie. There is no in between, either you like it or not. Daniel Day Lewis was superb and if he is not nominated to win an academy award and get it, we will be disappointed.

The only good thing about this movie was the title. It really should be called "There Will Be Sleep." I was waiting and waiting for something to happen. This movie stretches a story that could be told in 15 minutes into a long drawn out story about an oil industry giant who doesn't care about anyone except for his self. I struggled keeping myself awake. This definitely found it's place #2 in my Worst Movies of All Time just behind See No Evil.

If you are a thinking person you will love this movie, however if you voted for George Bush, you probably won't get it. I have read many reviews of this movie which accuse it of "having no plot". The movie tells a biographic story and I have yet to have seen a biography with a plot, not to mention that many great stories have no "plot". "Plots" are by no means a necessary ingredient for a "good story". The news often contains stories that are more entertaining than anything anyone could ever make up, and there is NEVER a plot in those stories. The movie very interestingly, artfully, and accurately explores the obsessive life of an early oil man and the prices he is willing to pay for his goals. In the beginning his obsession is to make money but as in reality it quickly transform into a hunger for power which cannot be satisfied. The most interesting part of the movie is the parallel between early oilmen and modern oilmen. As they seem equally as ruthless and cold hearted while raping the country for every nickel they can squeeze out of us all while making record profits! It's a perfect example of how human nature is very resistant to change and much the same today as it has always been. It is laws that make society civil and not human nature nor morality. This movie will leave you thinking about it long after you leave the theater, that is providing that you have that ability!

Incredibly bad movie. Not a word is spoke for the first 10-15 minutes of the movie! There was no plot, no explanation of why things were the way they were, and no point! Absolutely the most over-hyped movie I have seen in years. Long, boring, inaccurate and poorly directed. Felt like walking out after the first 30 minutes and should have because it got worse and more painful to watch after that right to the end which was ridiculous. DDL as usual was excellent but did nothing more than reprise his role from Gangs Of New York. Not worth the $8 dollar price of admission much less an Oscar nomination in my opinion.

You ever watch a movie and take one step out of the theater and say he or she will win the acadamy award fo best actor? Kathy Bates in misery comes to mind. This is one of those movies. Daniel Day-Lewis will win this year. This movie had great acting but was not the best movie i have seen this year; to long winded with out the action to support a movie of this caliber, but a true movie go'er can apreciate the craft.

This was an excellent movie, filled with great performances, especially Daniel Day-Lewis. This is an old-fashioned epic, in every sense of that word, with a grandness of scale, and underlying themes of obsession and morality. The protagonist, Day-Lewis's Daniel Plainview, is a man of supreme and ruthless ambition, who will manipulate and scheme in order to obtain the precious crude, yet has a blind spot when it comes to those who are close to him. Of course, as in any epic, this ambition comes at a price. If you're looking for a film with lots of action, you may be bored, but if you're willing to be patient with it and let it unfold, you will be rewarded with a rich experience.

A perfect blend of intense visuals, a hauntingly discordant score by Johnny Greenwood (guitarist for Radiohead), a deep, rich story, and superb acting, this movie is one of the best of '07 and one of the best of the century so far. There Will Be Blood is Paul Thomas Anderson's Citizen Kane, and it wouldn't be surprising to see this one take one take home the Oscar for Best Picture. Daniel Day-Lewis gives one of the best performances of the year as Daniel Plainview, but being overlooked and sometimes put down by other critics is Paul Dano who plays the preacher, Eli. It'd be tough for any actor to stack up to the incredible acting of Day-Lewis, but I really think Paul Dano holds his own here and does a magnificent job.

I thought it was good because it's the only movie I can think of that shows how the early oil towers were built and how the oil business really started. This movie will end up getting a oscar or two. Everyone did their acting great especially the main guy. Daniel Day-Lewis looks and sounds like he was meant for that part.

Probably the worst movie that my husband and I have ever seen. I must have looked at my watch 50 times. And the ending ??? Daniel Day Lewis, however was a wonderful actor but couldn't save this poor excuse for a script. What is going on in Hollywood these days?

There Will Be Blood is a great movie as it follows the life story of a selfmade man in the early twentieth century. The movie could have been longer, subplots better elaborated on. I am going to read the book to connect the dots where the movie had to cut corners. Like any great movie a book too rich to fully render in film must be the foundation for this. Watch it a be prepared to be awed.

Worst movie I ever seen. most of the scene is and oil man and his son from 1890's to 1900's digging oil and a child obsessed with god and preach about god.If you wanna learn how they dig oil back then and about obsession with god be my guess watch the movie..........

these days, when ticket prices are ridiculous, i kind of rate things by "was this worth 2 tickets totaling $18?" this flick is by far one of the best movies i have ever seen in my 45 years. and i've seen a few.

Totally aside from the movie, I was still waiting for the blood to flow when the movie ended. Anyway, like all movies not everybody will like it. It's a tale of the war for oil in the day when oil was just getting started and the type of situations one might find themselves in. The preacher and the son provided interesting sidelights, which are the elements of the movie that tied it back to real life today or 100 years ago. We all have conflicts with our children and others. This is the same thing 100 years ago.
DDL was the epitomy of the ageless war of selfishness versus trying to get along in the pursuit of his selfish goals. I;m not saying selfish is bad. In the end, we all are. This movie just goes to great lengths to show the extremes that some people will go to to acheive their personal selfish ends.
A Denver talk show that I very much enjoy, ranted about the "horrible soundtrack". I thought it was quite appropriatte for the movie and , in fact enjoyed it.
The music very much reminded me of the music in "Sling Blade". I thought the music in that movie was awsome and this movie made me wonder if it might have been the same group (It's not).
I thought the final scene with the son was unneccassary and was a bit sad to see it play out the way it did. But as he proves over and over, DDL says what's on his mind and means every bit of it.
