This is the type of a movie, with it's intensity, poetic visual canvas, dark subject matter and no-holds-barred acting that will have viewers leave a theater on either extreme....hating it or loving it. Very few "middle-of-the-roaders" here. Obviously I love it!. Such a gem. Day-Lewis at his brooding best. I was absorbed by his character's persona. I was curious about him, frightened by him, respected him (at times), was repelled by him, cared for him and had sadness and empathy for him. Only Daniel Day-Lewis could have created all of the facets that shimmered through this complex character. A masterpiece of movie acting.

I thought at first the movie was about the start of oil drilling. It started out very entertaining and informative. Daniel showed he can act for the first 30 minutes. Then it got a bit foggy. I didn't believe him when he was angry or aloof. He just didn't pull it off. The baby showed up without any story as to how he got the baby. The mother was just swept under the covers. The church story just did not fit into the flow of the movie and just slowed it down. I didn't even finish the movie it was so long and boring. I have no idea why this movie got so much award nominations.

I very rarely give 5 stars. This movie isn't for everyone. It is so different from the typical climatic formula used in movies today. Oil is more than a product, it is a character. The acting is brilliant, and the directing is unforgettable.
This movie is for those who view Hollywood as a means for art.

I had no idea that the beginning of "Big Oil" could be portrayed in such a lyrical fashion. What struck me most about the film was Day-Lewis' performance, and it made sense to me then that he makes one film every two or three years. He has an amazing ability to disappear into his characters, something that is said about many actors but is only true maybe 1% of the time. I was completely mesmerized by him and also by the tenacity and skill of Anderson - it takes guts to make this kind of movie today, and yet he did it and made a masterpiece. Bravo.

Excellent movie. Yes, there are long silences. Yes, the pacing is slow. Yes, the plot is secondary. YES, the acting is outstanding. YES the characters ring true in their flaws and their strengths. All of these things have been said before, and are all accurate. The bottom line, is that if you want to see a "film", then you will probably be satisfied with this movie. However, if you want to see a Hollywood "movie" then you will definately be dissapointed. If you consider "Armageddon" a 5 star movie, then I garauntee you - you will hate this film. So don't punish yourself unnecessarily. ---As a note, I did not find this movie "anti-christian" in any way. It's true that one of the characters preys on the faith of others. I found this to be a facet of that character's general immorality rather than a commentary on Christianity as a religion.

I can't add anything new to the fine professional reviews that are available so I won't try.
For those of you who hated the film, I suggest that you get a dictionary and look up the word 'review.' I'm amazed at the number of numbnuts commentaries. Perhaps you should read some of the professional reviews and try and learn something from them, like, what it was you weren't understanding about the film. Really though, don't bother. I know it can be a strain to use your brain too often. As one person commented, Spiderman 4 will arrive and until then you can hang out at TGIF and listen to Jessica Simpson.

It has been fifteen years since I picked a NEW "Most Boring & Painful to Sit through Movie". This is the new winner. This 2 1/2 hour commentary on...uh...whatever, had me spinning an invisible revolver and pointing it at my head. It was the first time I found myself wishing the audience would talk just so I would have something interesting to capture my attention. The 'preacher' had the spirit putting two words in my head..."So what?" I stayed because, much like watching a train wreck, I wanted to see if there actually was any blood that the title promised. If I could get free tickets to give to my friends for this movie, I would save them the time and just insult their intellegence directly. To the writers...go to Disneyland and get an imagination.

The makers of this movie obviously have a problem with the Christian religion. If they had used a moslem instead of a Christian to put in such a negative light there would have been riots all over the world. Why is it OK to denagrate Christianity? This movie is an embarrassment to Hollywood. I learned a lesson-get a review from a friend before attending such trash.
