I don't think anyone can possibly describe how good or bad this movie really is. I think in this case everyone is supposed to see it.
There is never a good ending when people discuss about religion; there are too many encountered opinions, so just go and see it for yourself.
In a more technical note, the visual effects are very good and the photography gave it a comic-book like haze. The female lead did not portray the role as good as it could have been but it was still not bad.
The overall color scheme used is simply outstanding and the dialogs are clear, funny and smart. A must see.
In my humble opinion I think it is an eye opener for those who don't think that following your faith is an option anymore.

This movie was powerful. It's always a pleasure to see an actor the caliber of Denzel take a movie and make it his own. The Hughes Brothers did a good job setting the landscape to support the story.

The Book of Eli is an action movie that makes you think. This quote stayed with me: "People used to have more than they needed. They threw away things we would kill each other for now." Denzel Washington is believable and strong as Eli. The supporting cast is not as strong. The reasons for shaking hands and dark glasses could have been explained better. The movie is more thought than plot.

Nothing mind-blowing here. A pretty straight, and pretty small story about Eli (Denzel), a man who travels west carrying the last copy of the Bible with him.
He comes across a town built by Carnegy (Gary Oldman). He's not really a good guy, and at the same time has done SOME good things for the people there. That's part of the problem with the film - there's not really a bad guy. At least not one that you can hate. He finds out about the Bible and wants to get his hands on it.
That's about the extent of the plot.
There is some good action, and some good visuals - but overall the don't make up for the lack of story, plot and character.

I thought the movie was dark and very violent. I have never done this before, but I left my friend to watch the rest of the move by himself after sitting in the theatre for an hour. I was hoping the movie would begin to enlighten me, but after an hour, I couldn't watch any longer. Of course, my friend told me I should have stayed until the end because, at the end, the entire movie made sense.

I read the reviews and saw the clips and decided to go see it on my day off. I must say that the beginning was good and supplied the suspense and drama I was anticipating but from there it was dry. I felt that besides the message that it intended the movie was boring. Without Denzel I feel this movie could have gone straight to dvd. I am sorry but I was expecting more of what I saw in the opening of the movie.

I thought this was a great movie featuring Denzel Washington. Not one to keep you on the edge of your seat but it would allow you to wonder what would happen next. Denzel is the movie. Although some of the other characters were interesting I felt their roles were contrite and forced. Some of the parts of the post-apocolypse could have been expanded on - shaking hands, glasses...
My son and husband came out wanting more, and I think by that they wanted a few more action scenes along the road at the end.

this was a better movie than people are realizing, Sure it's Denzel but as the movie progressed listen to what he's saying and watch him move about the screen. The challenge to movie goers is to listen and then to watch the action. This is why there is only a few action scenes and more dialog. Very well acted and even better spoken.

I enjoyed the movie, but the previews gave the impression of something other than what appeared. I really enjoyed the cinematogrophy. Nice twist at the end. I would have given it a 3 1/2, but I love Denzel!!! He adds the extra 1/2 point.

I thought the movie though apocalyptic and a little predictable was well done with solid twists. There was solid action to keep it moving along and a good ending, minus the final shots. They could have let it drop with Denzels final screen shots and it would have been spectacular. The girl taking on his persona looked like a cheap add-on or after-thought put in by Hollywood.
