An unsympathetic, unlikeable lead character, painfully slow pacing, and a completely unsatisying ending. Despite a few entertaining supporting characters, and the fact that this movie addresses some huge thought-provoking, existential themes, I found myself more annoyed by this movie than entertained. If I was watching this at home, I definitely would have been fast-forwarding through most of it. Yes, I understood what it was supposed to be about, and yes, as a Jew I could relate to a lot of it, but it could have been -- and should have been -- a much better movie. I think non-Jews will really hate this movie even more than I did. Don't bother.

If you're not Jewish I don't know how you can relate to this movie or enjoy it. It's all about jokes and drama relating to only Jewish problems and solutions. Going to three Rabbi's for advice is a little over the top and how can I respect any man who takes that much abuse? I don't care what your background is, a spineless character and cultural self indulgence is always a bore. True art is universal. It doesn't just pander to its base.

A Serious Man is one of their best stories and very funny as usual. Comedy is pain - so is the truth. And they know how to mine both. Don't miss it!

Confusing, but with many interesting angles, as came out as my wife and I disussed this movie, but aimed only at a Jewish audience of a certain age. Not for gentiles unless you know a lot about Jewish life. Had its moments but in the end, it wasn't worth going to and I will not recommend it

I found the movie more uncomfortable than hilarious like Barton Fink. It felt like it never really got started and the beginning was about 1 hour 45 minutes and then it ended. Reminiscent of the story of Job and life's unfairness, struggling with where and what God's role is, disconnected platitudes often given to those who are struggling with their situation.

The movie got so many elements of Jewish life right that it was astounding. So many subtleties evoked my own experiences growing up. And despite the outrageous humor (at times), the movie had a very serious sense about it. Congrats to the Coen Brothers!! Excellent!!

I say" poo-poo" to the poor reviews of this movie from other movie ticket.com reviewers! This movie was cast with mostly unknown Minnesota actors and what a job they did! The performances were spot on. Jessica McManus and Aaron Wolf were terrific as Larry's children. I think they both have a bright furture ahead. Sari Wagner a Minnesot fave was percect. If Michaeal Sthulbarg doesn't get an oscar nod for this there is no God for Larry. Say what you will about the Coens, along with their casting director Rachel Tenner they picked a terrific cast for this firm. Kudos Joel and Eathan!

Fatalism dominates this film. Little can be done to control your destiny (or God's will), regardless of how good a person you are . A take-off of the story of Job in the bible. While the movie is funny, the underlying theme is not. If the Coen brothers weren't Jewish, I would think this movie is somewhat anti-sematic given the stereotyping of Jews in the film. Having said that, as a Jew, I found that many of the experiences that Larry and his son had with the religious leaders rung true. I recommend the film highly...but I think it will have limited appeal. As my husband said, "It won't play well in Peoria!"

I was disappointed in this movie. There really didn't seem to be a clear point and the disgusting factor with the brother's cyst is unnecessary and does nothing to improve/add to the story. I felt like nothing happened after the movie was over. I love the Coen brothers but I'm not too impressed with this.

A Serious Man has some serious pleasures, mostly in it's seemingly pitch perfect depiction of a growingly confident and increasingly secular middle class American suburban Judaism in the late 1960's. These scenes are very funny and touching, and luckily, enough to sustain a story that, while interesting, is not as strong. Overall very enjoyable.
