Think of this as the Coen Brothers' take on the story of Job from the Old Testament. Everything in the life of the lead character Larry Gopnik, a befuddled nebbish, is going wrong. He seeks an answer to the question: why does God allow such misery? The answer: there is no answer! This movie is faintly comic, with humor of the deadpan variety. But the lead character is not appealing, and all the other characters (almost all Jewish) are caricatures. This movie takes a long time to go nowhere in particular.

Mysterious. Things happen. Because. What comes around did not go around. Watch out for the tornado! If it weren't for that, I'd've sworn it was Levittown, Long Island. I loved the cantors whispering the words to the boy who was too nervewracked and or stoned to start his Bar Mitzvah reading.
If the visitor at the beginning was the dybbuk, was the man with the Hebrew letters on his teeth the Golem?
Sweet. Funny. A movie you wouldn't mind seeing again.

I'm Jewish. I got the Jewish content. It was good. Some good scenes, memorable moments. But, as a whole, I think I'm getting tired of the Coen Bros. having thier audiences finish their movies for them. Again, a movie ends, the lights go up, and I'm left looking at my wife going "WTF?" they're really gonna just end it like that? It's getting annoying.

Very interesting film, posing serious questions about the meaning of life and our relationship to a divine force. Order versus disorder, quantum probability cast into the human domain. Looking for answers from Rabi to the lyrics of Jefferson Airplane all cast in a humorous mix Jewish and gentile stereotypes.

What's to say??? Well, it's definitely the most unattractive cast in the history of Hollywood films. They went out of the way to pick some seriously goofy people. that aside... I saw where they were going and I appreciated the honesty and quirkiness that are typical of the Coen brothers. Not particularly 'funny' per se... but likeable just the same. I think it will be best appreciated by viewers of Jewish faith. Many laughs were underappreciated by people who are not familiar with the traditions and lives of the this particular religion. If you are familiar, you will understand the movie more and find it funny, I think.

I knew to expect brilliance from the Coen Brothers but I simply wasn't prepared for this.
It is one of those rare films that left me staggering out of the cinema, bewildered, knowing that I've experienced something significant but not knowing what it is or how to articulate what I feel. A true work of art.
The film is split down the middle. The filmmakers realize that their audience is all of thinking humanity. It provides an equally strong message for people of faith and superstition and for those who choose to rely on reason and evidence to carry on through their lives.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

For those who follow the Coen Brothers and know their love of rewriting the classics, like the Odyssey as Oh Brother Where Art Thou, this clearly autobiographical look at the Book of Job will resonate. In 1967, a Jewish physics professor in Minnesota is beset with a series of woes that challenge his insular view of the life he has led. Once again they depict an ordinary man who becomes a pawn in the battle of good vs. evil, herein called by their Jewish personnas- Hashem vs. the Dybbuk. Its a very idiosyncratic look at the world the Coen Brothers obviously grew up in and of both the myths and men they knew. Some of it is priceless and funny, but it may be too narrow a character study for others.

This may just be the most mature film done by the coen brothers. set in the late 60s (kudos for authenticity in sets and costumes), an ordinary schlub undergoes a series of trials, which cause him to seek to understand himself and his god.
Most of the characters are stereotypes, which is ok in a film about stereotypes. One of the points of the film is that our schlub eventually breaks out of his mold.
The audience laughed out loud. Coen fans will enjoy it, as will those who appreciate wry humor.

This movie made no sense and it was long and boring. It went on and on. There was nothing funny about it. Maybe you have to be Jewish to appreciate it but even then this movie is not worth even renting to me. The beginning does not tie in at all with the movie and the ending was even more confusing than the entire movie put together.

Not at all boring and not at all uplifting. It is funny and sad at the same time. This is a movie about middle class Jews who seem very familiar even "family" to me a gentile. No one deserves a family like this but they seem so real. They are actually caricatures of real people who we can like, in part because they make stupid mistakes and we feel so sure we would not make those mistakes.

Life is one "Oy" after another. Tsures (trouble) is not unique to the Jews. I have met everyone of those characters in my life, including the wife of a friend who would stab you in the heart to prove a point. Bad things do happen to good people. The point being, we rise above it and push on. Wonderfully dark and an accurate portrayal of the '60's, that is really every decade and a harbinger of the self-indulgence and entitlement years to come. The meaning of life is never answered. You don't have to be Jewish to recognize that truth. Bravo.

As in the biblical book of Job, personal catastrophe forces the hero to seek the meaning of it all. But here, outrageous humor, utterly recognizable characters (especially if you're Jewish), and the insanity of "normal" human beings make for a whirlwind of hope, sadness, anger, frustration, and longing. I want to see it again ASAP!

A formulaic piece of existential garbage in which a couple of supposedly avant garde film makers show us that the struggle to live a decent life is meningless, and the effort to be a decent guy brings only contempt.
They take a decent but boring mid-western guy, and visit every kind of tragedy and humiliation on him, and mock his religion to boot. Its boring, and its been done (by the French and Italians) a million times before. Save your time and money.

The Coen brothers have a knack for taking the serious, mundane, depressing drudge of life and pulling out the ironic, quirky, dark humor parts and letting us feast on them. I am not Jewish but I have several friends that are and I could see the fatalistic "hamster wheel" at work throughout this movie. Darkly funny stuff. The scenes at the end with the phone call from the doctor and the tornado were perfect punctuation marks to cap off this film! Life goes on ....and there are consequences. If I were Jewish I have a feeling I would have gladly given it 5 stars.

A serious man was a great example of the magic of the Coen brothers, using farce and allegory to make a compelling statement about morality, faith in God and the meaning of life. The story was based on an updated book of Job. Many modern plagues of Job rain on poor Larry Gopchik, a hard-working Jewish professor of physics in the Minnesota of the 1960's, and he desperately searches for someone with the wisdom to explain why God let's this happen to him, As someone brought up in Jewish America of the 60's, this movie was right on as to sets, clothing, even the way the actors spoke and acted. Without giving it away the ending was priceless (and different from the ending of the book of Job). A MUSTSEE!!!

Saw "A Serious Man" last night. Irreverent Coen Brothers at their existential darkest. Nobody is spared, especially meaning-searching middle-class suburban Jews. Funny, but not ha, ha funny. Ebert says
"wince-wince" funny and he was right. Especially when you know or are related to some of the characters. Jefferson Airplace play important role.

While very funny throughout, some scenes that may appear surreal are actually very accurate to Levitown-like life in the mid-1960's. The film asks the same type of religious questions that I was seriously pursuing while trying to get to the meat of my religion from 2nd to 7th grade. The answer I got is similar to that given in the film - religion is only what you can make of it and no one can tell you anything more precise because there is no there there and the stories are just that. The film chronicles the end of knee-jerk religious belief faced scientific progress. This is the period when it stopped making sense to children and we were all left to find our own ways with tradition for support but without faith.

I have always been amazed of how much material Woody and the Cohen brothers can come up with on the Jewish condition and self-quilt/hatred. They are at the top of their game when they pursue their Jewich issues. If you are too serious a person to deal with self introspection with a Jewish bent then don't see this movie.Otherwise, enjoy the humor.

Given the other great films the Cohen brothers have made and given the hype I had heard about this one, I was VERY disappointed.
Like other people commenting on it have noted, unless you are Jewish (and I'm not), you will have a VERY hard time relating to/follwong this film. I am also not sure what story the film makers were trying to convey - what, "life sucks, then you die?"

I was so excited to see this movie as I am such a fan of the Cohen Bros. but this movie was BAD. If I had it on DVD I would of shut it off. I would of walked out of the theater, had it not been for my husband with me- who by the way, ended up not liking it either. It was so slow, the story never really went anywhere and the Jewish jokes were so "inside" that if you are not Jewish, it just goes way, way over your head. The best parts are the 13 yr olds getting stoned, so what does that say? Such a bummer, as we had high hopes.
