My son and I saw the movie and were thoroughly absorbed the entire 2 1/2 hours! We are huge fans of the series, but I had big doubts about how much I would enjoy the movie being set outside the familiar halls of Hogwarts. I needn't have worried; we were transfixed. We loved the way the characters are shown growing and maturing. My son has read every book, and I have read none. Each of us was engaged every minute. He was very pleased with the adaptation, and I loved not knowing what was coming next! Surpassed our expectations; we can't wait for Part 2.

I saw this movie for the 2nd time last night and it was as good or better than the 1st viewing. I am so glad they decided to break this book up into 2 parts. To have tried to squeeze that book into two and a half hours would have been a grave injustice. It's just a shame that the next one will be the last movie. Great through 7. I cannot wait for #8 !!!

I was pleasantly surprised by how engaged I was. I'm usually annoyed by how many details are left out in the movie interpretations of the books, but this one left me fairly satisfied. There were some embellishments I found completely unnecessary, but it's to be expected. The biggest disappointment is having to wait until July for part 2. The key to enjoying this movie is to NOT read the book before you go. Just enjoy the movie for it's own sake.

Being a fan of this series, it wasn't difficult to make the decision to see this latest edition. Our expectations were far surpassed! I can also honestly say that the entire filled -to- capacity audience was as mezmerized as we were - not a sound in the audience throughout the entire movie! I saw the movies before this before I read that books. After the last movie I finally sat down and read them all. So I was a little disappointed and annoyed that they would split the last book into two movies. So annoyed in fact that there would be 6 months between them that I almost didn't go and see this in the theaters. How ever I went to see it last night and was glad that I did. My wife and I liked it. Over all it was a little slow (and the emo pity me scenes felt like they were dragged out too long just like in the book). Obviously with any book adaptation there are parts that are going to be left out, but over all they did a pretty good job of hinting at or at least briefly touching base on some of those things. If you plan to see the last movie, make sure that you see this in theaters before it leaves (which looks like it will be shortly).

I have to admit I am already a huge Harry Potter fan and this film was the perfect "bridge" to setting up the premiss for the next movie. Everything is going to come together miraculously for this next and final film. Well done.

The last two movies have really become character driven. The acting has really stepped up a lot. That gives this movie a new feel to it. It's a lot darker, emotions are running wild. The characters are being pushed to their limits and the actors being mature young adults can actually represent that well. A lot happens relatively quick in this film but that is just because they have so much to cover. If you have read the books you may find the ending point a bit awkward but appropriate and if you haven't read them your going to be dying to see more. Overall good movie.

Well, this is the first of the movies that has seriously disappointed me.
It was hard to follow the story. And, extremely easy to miss the character dialogue over deafening sound effects and shock treatment that seemed to be pandering to the "Friday the 13th" crowd.
I understand the need to simplify things in order to go from print to film. But, the dialogue in this film contains numerous unexplained hints and innuendos that merely scratch at the surface of the plot. There are many important new characters introduced that are given little, or no background. And, the mind-link sequences between Harry and Voldemort are unexpected, unexplained, confusing, and way too loud to hear the dialogue.
So, unless one has read the books, I cannot see how one could follow the movie. Let alone attempt to conceive the plot.
If the makers of this movie would (at the very least) drop the volume of the special effects so that the dialogue can be heard, and reduce the amount of 3D shock treatment, I would give this movie a higher rating.
I will see part II only because it will complete the series. Buy the book kiddies. You won't be sorry.

Unless you are heavily into the JK Rowling plot, the SFX is becoming tiresome. In the earlier films, you were entertained even though you may not have been familiar with the intricities of the story. The eye candy held your attention. Now that we have seen the "magic", the story has to carry the day. For those of us who have not taken the time to read Rowling's tomes, the convoluted plots are difficult to follow especially considering the character's accents.
We will wait for the DVD on the final episode, do a little homework on the story and hope to be able to appreciate the conclusion.

This is the darkest Harry Potter movie yet. None of it takes place in Hogwarts, as Harry and his friends are on the run from Valdemort. This movie is much different from the earlier movies in several respects. It is much darker and scarier than the earlier movies, although I kept telling myself while watching it that it's always darkest before the dawn, only in this case we have to wait for Part 2 to see that dawn. Very well made, with seamless special effects.

With so much information in the book, book 7 has been split into 2 movies, of which this was the 1st. Can't wait for the finale!
Also, would almost wish that they had decided to do this for earlier books in the series, which left out many things in order to fit the story into one 2.5 hr film.

Touching, emotional, scary, and thrilling...everything the first part of the final chapter of this excellent series is supposed to be. The choice to split this story into two definitely was the right one as there was far too much in the story to whittle it down to one 2 1/2 hour movie. I am counting the months until part 2!

My family, all adults, enjoyed this movie . The story line followed the book and the pacing allowed the characters to develop and react with each other. Would have liked to see a bit more of Hogworts but the British scenery was spectacular. Waiting impatiently for the second half.

I agreed with other reviews I'd read that saw several hints and references to Lord of the Rings. It started to get to be a little much when the wonder trio were pictured amongst sweeping ocean shots and sprawling mountains, not to mention what I've dubbed the "quest for the one wand to rule them all."
Overall, the movie was not too wet and not too dry. I found it lacking in suspense, but the flick definitely contained several meaningful moments that do move strongly to the culmination of the theatrical saga. Naturally I expected some delay of climax and a smoother story arc with the final chapter forthcoming. That being said, the introduction was well-shot and performed, and did serve to bring the movie to a nice opening about-face with sweeping action sequences, comedic moments, drama, and special effects.
Nothing about the movie really tugs at the heartstrings quite enough, but the audience is not without some moments of heart. It's hard not to be desensitized after the end of the previous chapter. Steve Kloves' adaptation of the original work and David Yates' momentum work together to create a very stable sense of the characters maintaining their identities while plodding through difficulty. This is achieved without the story beginning to plod, as well as a polite lack of flippancy that might be exhibited to maintain interest while the story moves through the doldrums.
Fortunately with Part 1, slow and steady wins the race. This piece treads the middle path of all possible genres. While it will never be the blockbuster that sweeps you off your feet, it is the movie it needs to be.

I liked this movie a lot. The story was a lot easier to follow than in the book and the acting was fine. The cinematography was stunning at times. It did move slowly and quite a few scenes ended with people just staring at each other as if it was an afternoon soap opera. Good film, though!! Go see it if you're a fan.

Very dark, very intense. It's building to a climax in the final movie, but this one shows further insights into the characters as they've matured. It also sets the stage for the final battle. Definitely not for young kids, but my husband and I enjoyed it a lot. We plan to watch the whole series of movies again shortly before seeing the last one.

For Potter fans it is not disappointing. Lots of great interplay between the 3 main characters, lots of spells, magic, witchcraft, evildoers, chases and strange elves (reminiscent of Golum fro Lord of the Rings). Fantastic cinematography and effects, lots of fun - and at over 2.5 hours, plenty of bang for the buck. And this is just part 1 of the finale.

Overall not too bad. Having read the book, I was disappointed with the omissions made in the movie. Several fast moving scenes, will have to buy the DVD to be able to rerun them and see all I missed.
