I have never read the books nor have I ever heard of the history to this movie. It didn't matter, I liked this movie a lot. The story follows two sisters who love the same man. Only, he is the king and married. The story has a lot of twists and intrigue. It has a good story about how sisters can grow apart over small things but come back together during the hard times to support each other. The story shows the evils of greed and envy and how it can destroy lives. I would recommend this movie to anyone. I would not let little kids see this movie but it would do some teenagers good.

If you have not read the book or have seen the Showtime Series the Tudors you will like this movie. I however have seen both and think the movie does not come close to either. The movie sped through about 400 pages of the book from where Anne enchants the king to when she eventually becomes queen. This was done in about 7 minutes. The casting was mediocre. I loveee Eric Bana but he should not have been cast as Henry, he is not nearly as mean and powerful as hes portraid in the book. Natalie Portman is a great actress however not seductive enough. Her body is like a little boy. I think she should have been Mary and Scarlett should have been cast as Anne, eventhough Scarlett Johansen did do a great job as Mary. Overall I would recommend it to someone who doesnt know much about the time period and then I would recommend they read the book!!! That was phenomenal!!!!

After reading so much on the Tudor family & being so interested in that era, I found The Other Boelyn girl to be very accurate historically. The performances were excellent, as would be expected from these fine actors. I think even those not interested in English history would enjoy the storyline and intrigue.

I had read the novel the movie is based on (same as the movie title. it's by Philippa Gregory) and I know a decent amount about what actually happened historically in this period and in Henry's court. The movie is BARELY true to the history and possibly even less true to the novel. If you read the synopsis for this movie it says Mary bears Henry 2 children (and she does in the novel) but in the movie she has one. The movie acts as though Anne is thrust in front of the King first but really it is Mary first. (Also historically Mary came first) The timing is horrible...things that are meant to have taken place over the course of several YEARS (i.e. Anne trying to enchant and keep Henry and ascend to the throne) are made to seem like a matter of days or months and things that take no time at all are overextended through pointless musical interludes. The relationship between Mary and Anne is not nearly as compelling and competitive as in the novel. All in all whoever wrote this novel into a screenplay clearly only skimmed the pages and wrote it near backwards for how much attention to detail was paid.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Incredible movie, sure to spark emotional connection in both men and women. Eric Bana, Natalie Portman, and Scarlet Johansen are terrific in this movie. Perfectly casted and one the better movies. For drama, it is up there with Beowulf, 300, and various other greats. Highly recommend this movie. We loved it.

Anyone who enjoys period pieces will enjoy this movie. It's a gREAT date movie because of all the inuendo. It will get you in the mood for a personal session back home. :) Very colorful and passionate but not very realistic . I mean REALLY, Eric Bana as King Henry!?!? Have you SEEN a portrait of the REAL King Henry? He was a homely, pasty white, f@t guy with beady little eyes. More like Jaba-the-Hut if you ask me. Now if Mr. Seymore from Truman Capote played King Henry the VIII that would have been more realistic! I would have liked to see Scarlett and Natalie kiss Mr. Seymore and make it look like they liked it ! That would take some REAL acting. It would have been more true to what King Henry was like- a Geek! Not the stud that Eric Bana is. I mean how hard was it ,to make out with Eric?! Pleeeeeese.

There are so many PG-13 movies out there that cater to the two main demographics that hold up the box office business, it's great to see there are still some great movies out there with great acting, casting, and detail-oriented production.
It's even better when a movie like this stays true to fact, I was amazed at how much of the story is in fact true or has been conjectured as true by scholars.

My Boyfriend and I enjoyed this movie very much, and made us more interested in the history of it. It kept you awake ad waiting for more the whole time. But it is sad. It is a must see. You will enjoy every moment. Trust Me! ;-)
