Was this movie original? No.
It was a cross between Star Wars, Outbreak and Dances With Wolves. I think what made the movie work was the amazing technology used to make it. I would put it alongside Star Wars, Terminator 2, Matrix and Independence Day.
It was visually captivating and thus you were trapped in a maze of often used plots but you didn't care... I liked the movie and i would see it again.

I reluctantly agreed to see this with a friend because I'm not a Sci-fi fan at all nor do I like movies over 1.5 hrs in length. HOWEVER, I really enjoyed this movie! It is visually stunning, intelligent and original. It was full of action, suspense and romance. It's NOT for younger kids due to intense war scenes and emotional content. Leave the kiddies at home and see this movie. I believe both men and women would really like it alot. I'm going to see it again tomorrow!

I saw it a second time with family who had not seen it yet. The second time was without the 3D feature. I liked the second one more because I thought the 3D glasses hindered the viewing experience. Either way...Great movie in many levels. Oscar perhaps?

Visually spectacular! I found myself caring for the characters. I even shed a couple of tears, silly me! I did find some of the acting to be comic book character-like, but was able to get beyond it quickly. Definately worth seeing!

3D has improved sooo much. What a fun experience. My husband, friend and teenage son and I all loved it. For the 1st time in a long while we didn't feel we were overcharged for what we recieved. And the time goes by very quickly, even for a teenager. Beautiful scenery, exotic creatures, interesting characters, fast action...all the while you feel you could reach out and touch the screen. Couldn't recommend it higher. Go TODAY!

Avatar is a colorful, creative, well-conceived movie. The visual presentation is stunning and the world you are absorbed in is beautiful. I found some of the acting and some of the dialogue under-done. I also found some of the political inferences to be un-necessary and overdone. For example, the reference to "Shock and Awe" as a dig against the Bush administration. James Cameron is a visionary director and writer. Leave politics out of these kind of movies.

This is a very good movie. The computer generated graphics are exceptional. I really enjoyed the show. The story line is typical but it works here. Just enjoy the show and not try to read anything into it.

The main thing I noticed about this movie was the 3D special effects and the greatness that the CGI-style animation made this movie into. particles of dust and ash, etc looked as though it was landing on your nose (had urge to swipe it away lol). The battles and the fights were nothing short of epic greatness, and the storyline unique.

We were disappointed with the message of "white man" destroys the "Native Indians" theme. We happen to be part native American Indian and I found this theme revolting.
The graphics "CGI" was great! - But the message was just another Left Wing Social message.
Our General News Media and Hollywood are run by the same new left wing Socialists.
The coarse language used by the supposedly good guys was just unbelievable and blasphemous to any deity.
We were just disappointed the lack of story.

I was a little leery about the movie being so long. But once it starts, it keeps you captivated throughout the whole movie. It did not seem that long at all. The 3D was awesome. You actually wanted to 'reach out and touch'. With the combination of a love story and good/bad guy theme, it really was a great movie. I actually want to go see it again. The vivid colors are spectacular, and the special effects are wonderful. It really is a movie you don't want to miss!

impressive technical achievement, with an equally impressive story, Avatar reaffirms James Cameron's incredible gift for imaginative, absorbing filmmaking. This is one of those movies that invites you in, makes you believe and want to become part of the world. You feel for the characters, and are moved to want to help them or even become one of them. The underlying tone and relationships to historical pasts and futuristic possibilities only enhances the experience. This is one of those movies that comes along once in a lifetime and makes that great impression. I will own it on Blue ray and enjoy it again and again, and walked out of the movie praying that there will be a follow-up in the works.

Movie was very entertaining. A little disappointed in the 3D, as half the fun of seeing a 3d movie is to have things coming out of the screen at you and there really was not much of that in his movie. The 3d was used more to make the special effects look cooler.

This movie was unbelievable in IMAX 3-D. It's the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was so good that I saw it twice. I loved the message, the theme, the characters and the special effects. You know the movie is engaging when you don't see anyone move to go to the bathroom and this movie was 2.5 hours long - lol

This movie was incredible, it held a story of love, pride, courage and one with nature and all she has to offer. James Cameron out did himself in this story of wonder, excitement, adventure and oness of people comming together and fighting for the things they cherish and beleive in.

I am a Native American Indian and I don't think that James Cameron wanted to cature the essense of our historial struggle. More so he seems to have wanted to create a culture of pure innocent aliens intertwined with nature. Their respect for their deity and living in one with their environment - Simple yet elegant.
The movie was incredible -- the story was sound and there was no down time in the eventful ride. James Cameron is a genius!

OK, so there are mainly two kinds of Sci-Fi movie watchers, those who get really irritated when the movie details are not realistic (like all aliens know how to speak english and look like humans but a little different), and there are those who really don't care about anything other than the entertainment value of the movie (I'm one of those guys). So it should not come as a surprise that I think Avatar is an AMAZING movie in every way shape or form.
Only downside is that aliens are too much like Native Americans.

I am not frequent movie patron, but this one caught my eye. I enjoyed this movie from the very beginning to the end. The plot was different from many past science fiction movies I have seen and kept my interest even though the outcome was predictable to an extent. Plenty of action, human types of interaction and emotions were available throughout the movie. I would heartily recommend this movie to the science fiction crowd.

This was a great movie. A little slow to start, but took off very quickly/. The story line was engaging, the action was continuous, and the effects were amazing! My wife was skeptical about going to see Avatar, but she came out saying "what a great movie!" We want to go back and see it in 3D!

My husband and I took my teenage daughter and 10 year old son to this movie for a 'Family Night'. I have to admit, he and I, were not that excited about seeing an animated film. And my daughter wanted to stay home. I was worried about the length of the film, or that my daughter would complain the whole time. But it was fantastic. We were all sucked in to the movie from beginning to end. I kept turning to my husband to say, "This is unbelievable." Anyway, best movie we've all seen in awhile and we talked about it in the car the whole way home!

This was by far the best movie I have seen in many many years. I am an avid StarTrek fan and I loved the new ST movie but I have to say that Avatar was light years beyond StarTrek. The visuals, the graphics, the story line, and the effects were outstanding. The underlying message was beautifully presented and very appropriate for this day and time. I was encouraged to see this movie by a relative after I wasn't impressed with the previews. I did it for the 3-D experience but was quickly consumed by the entire experience.
Don't hesitate to see this movie!!

Once again, J. Cameron has excelled in his ability to take history and turn it into a beautiful yet poignant storyline. Yes, the visual effects are outstanding! Capturing Horner for the sound score was genius. However, the story behind Avatar is the true masterpiece. Will we ever learn from our arrogance as Americans that not all cultures desire to be US? Bravo, Mr. Cameron! In addition, for those who merely desire a beautiful movie with, as my husband called them, chick flick features, this is a “must see” as well!

The action takes place on a beautiful moon orbiting a Jupiter-like planet. The story is very like "Dances with Wolves" except that the Indians win, and the final battle is reminiscent of the fight between the Ewoks and the Stormtroopers. The computer created scenery is imaginative and brilliant, and breathtaking to behold. The story is basically good-versus-evil plot, pitting the angelic and elf-like natives against brutal and unfeeling mercenaries. Some present-day references appear in the script, such as the military commander saying " We must make a premptive strike, and fight terror with terror". I saw it in 2D, and will probably go back again to revel in the 3D scenery.

Absolutely game changing from a visual point of view (3D version). Must be seen, and must be seen on big screen. 3D aspect very powerful and engaging. Not cheesy like the old days. Still a bit overdone in a few places, but generally awesome.
The story, plot, character development, acting, etc. are all good. Not great, not bad. Good, at least for an action movie. Much of it is very predictable and contrived, but the execution is good enough that it's still tolerable, and even when it isn't just sit back and look at it. Wow.
The editing could have been a little tighter. I did become aware of how long it is a couple of times and wanted things to get moving.
