It has been annoying this summer and fall to hear all the skeptics talk about how Avatar would be a giant blunder and how awful it looked. It is great that about 30 minutes into James Cameron's film that I knew they would be silenced.
Cameron has crafted a visually stunning epic with something for everyone. Action, adventure, romance, thrills, and laughs. I was not surprised at all. This is what Cameron does. Look at his track record.
So go enjoy the film and remember it the next time you see a film with James Cameron's name on it.

The dialogue was so simple that it brought attention to it itself. It undermined the movie for me and I couldn't stop thinking about how second tier it was. Half the stuff said was so pedestrian and boring that it kept me from getting into the characters. Weavers and Rodridquez characters didn't say one thing that had any weight to it nor did anyone else. Overall, I liked the movie but the writing came off as something someone wrote from hearing cliches and from thinking it's cool to use once popular sayings that have come and gone. JC needed someone to be there to nudge him and say "um James, people stopped saying that stupid stuff (shut your pie hole, numnuts) a few years ago."

It was visually an awesome film. No one has ever made a movie looking like this. The surround sound was also done very well. The story was it weak point especially at the end but it doesn't really damage the film but it was very predictable. On the other hand, If it was too complicated, no one would like it. It was a classic David and Goliath story. The main thing is that it was not a Hollywood cookie cutter film so I applaud Cameron big time for that (and all his pictures). It seemed a bit long and I felt he could have cut about a half hour out of it by snipping a moment or two from various places in the film. I give it an A- (my 3 1/2 stars out of four). Can't wait to see the sequel.

Avatar is the movie of the year! I had high hopes for James Cameron in this movie and I was not disappointed. It was an outstanding film and I can't wait to see it again (going again this weekend!) No matter what your taste in movies, you should definately see Avatar - it will blow you away!

When you can leave a movie with your sense of wonder re-ignited then it has been a successful time. This movie sparks imagination and awe with the incredible special effects and far thinking that Cameron is known for. Yes it has a romance, yes it has action, yes it has a protagonist, it has characters you love and characters you hate, but what is has mostly is depth of feeling and a reason to see it more than once and a desire to own it once it is on DVD.

The special affects of this movie certainly did live up to the hype. The problem I had was the liberal preaching and overuse of stereotypes. I prefer a little more subtlety in my characters. I felt like I was in a Michael Moore movie with special affects.

Writing this the day after seeing the movie, many images of the Na'vi are still strong in my mind. That RARELY happens for me and is an indication of how fully-realized Cameron's vision of Pandora is. I echo all the other positive comments. Had the story, character development and acting all been on a par with the CGI, this would have been one of the best movies of all time. Since they weren't, I give it 4 stars overall - still very much worth seeing and groundbreaking from a technical standpoint for sure, but no Lord of the Rings, for example.

Even if the plot was nothing new, I was completely satisfied because every other aspect was! The creativity of the concept, the level of intricacy in the details, and the outstandingly believable acting were all out of this world. I saw it twice in two days, and man, I would go see it again in a heartbeat!

James Cameron and Warner Bros spent something upwards of $300 million and 4-1/2 years making the 2-1/2+ hour movie. If you enjoy spectacular special effects, it is a must see. If you are only interested in the story and have already seen Dances with Wolves, there is no need to spend the time and money. No, wait...Since this is a ground breaking film, I think that in a capitalist society, we all have a moral responsibility to do our part to support this effort which will change movie making forever. So buy a ticket, but only go into the theater if you want to see Dances with Wolves in outer space.

We saw the 2D version and were overwhelmed by the beauty and expanse of the visuals.
Not one scene was wasted. The plotting and storylines are compelling and believable.
The acting was great. James Cameron may not make a lot of movies but when he finishes a work it is completely worth it. We can't wait to see it in IMAX 3D!!!

Beautifully done in story telling and, of course, effects. It is a rather well known story, but told in a wonderful way that is riveting, poignant, enriching, and ultimately a sad commentary on humanities failings and the future those failings could bring. A story that needs re-telling as often as necessary. The world Cameron creates is simply gourgeous, a spectacular feast for the eyes. The 3D effects are perfect in their sublety, bringing an incredible depth to the screen that feels very natural, and is quickly overlooked...except for the ocassional dodge! Everyone of age should see this movie (maybe a little older than 13), on the big screen in 3D.

I am not really one for Sci-Fi... but this is one heck of a movie. The Story line is something that is realistic considering that state of our planet. The special effects are OUT OF THIS WORLD. I seen the 2D version. I can't imagine what the 3D is like. This movie captures you. GO SEE IT!!!

While basicly the story line is that of "Dances with Wolves", ya know guy from another race jumps in gains trust of other race, accepted as one of them, falls in love with the girl, helps new race beat his own race.. blah blah blah, it was still a worth while story with plenty of depth. The visual effect of the entire movie wouldn't have let you focus on much more story line if it had it! It was feast for the soul! Best Movie In years!!

the last time a movie made me feel like this was when i first saw moulin rouge. i wanted to buy another ticket and watch it all over again (right after i hit the bathroom!). the story was perfect. i don't know where to begin. what kind of mind thinks this stuff up? i really don't care much for james cameron as a person...but he IS a genius, there is no doubt. i would think, even for morons who think the "balance of nature" is not important, this movie would be very enjoyable to watch.

Must watch the movie in 3D! This movie really makes you feel as if you're "in the move". The high views remind me of the first time looking into the Grand Canyon...breathtaking. Great story line, unbelievable special effects...good job James!

easy to see why it is the most expensive movie to date, the special effects are super. The colors and action are excellent and it would have been the perfect movie with the exception of the storyline being so predictable. The movie is long and worth every second of watching, particularly for children. Took me back to my childhood reminding me of a book i read called Dragon Riders of Pern. Worth the price of admissiona and time spent with your child!

With a mixture of moral and ethical subplots and great special effects, AVATAR formulates into an overall storyline that not only thrills, but educates the moviegoer! This movie is fantastic but........the plot completely lacks imagination. It's Apocolypse Now, Aliens, Jumangi, Star Wars and a Disney movie all rolled into one. You've seen this movie before--just not all in one place.
That said, there were times I couldn't tell if the Avatar was a person in makeup or CG--that's how good this movie's special effects are.
Go see it--you won't be disappointed but don't expect some earth-shattering plot.

First and foremost the effects were stunning. They have finally gotten it right. Lighting, shading, real/cgi mix - awesome. That being said, I agree with the other reviewers that there were WAY too many analogies in the storyline. Indians, for example... most of the movie was slow and steady, but watchable. I'm glad I went to see it - I may go back to see it in 3D too.

Though this movie was nearly 3 hours long it had no dull spots and kept the audience riveted.
The plot and the CGI were great. The 3D effects were well done but not overstated.
