My 20-year old daughter and I had the same initial reaction; the storyline seemed Very similar to an animated movie called "Fern Gully"; remember that? Aside from that, the technology was impressive; the cgi & 3-D, et al. We both thought it was a bit too long, also; could've been trimmed about 15-20 minutes.

The movie overall was good times, I wouldn't say it revolutionizes the sci-fi action flicks of today. The storyline throughout was incredibly predictable throughout all the way to the end. But if you walk into this movie as a very well computer graphic ed, action, 3D movie then you will enjoy it overall. But still worth to see in theaters.

There is so much negativity about the story line - that it is boring, "it's all been done before," but if people of Earth are tired of love, loyalty and sick of the sacrifice of self for something worthy and wonderful, then they need to stay here on this planet and leave Pandora and the Navi people alone. Love and Truth are universal. Sadly, so is greed. Avatar teaches us the same lessons that we continually refuse to learn. The movie is a must see.

There is no doubt that the technology made for amazing and brilliant digital effects, and this is where the movie lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately, it fell far short story wise and the characters had no real heart. I actually walked out before the movie was overall for me it was a big disappointment.

Visually, this movie is a royal flush. Stunning colors and imaginative settings. Seamless integration of CG with live action. The characters and story, however, left me feeling I was watching a rerun of a story I've already seen a dozen times or more. The beauty of the setting and the wizardry of the technology do not make up for for an overused plot and trite sterotyped characters.

Avatar is the most passionate, intelligent, challenging use of special effects technology I have ever seen - it uses these "effects" in the service of a powerful story, about love, the environment, the potential loss we face as a species, and our mission as humans. It's told beautifully - in a way that is really hard to do with words. Only way to really get this movie is to see it, and let yourself be transported by the story and the world created by the artists who envisioned Pandora. Any niggling negative details, are superceded by the huge technical, artistic and humanitarian accomplishment of the rest of the film. I never thought I would say this after seeing a movie made for over $500million but - James Cameron, you are amazing!!

... but no story. This story has been done, and requires little, to no IQ. The characters are stereotypes of stereotypes! The lines are pathetic!
I give it 2 stars, though, because to watch it in 3D was stunning! It was more like a ride, than a movie.
However, technology will move on and get better, produce more incredible breakthroughs, but this story and product will still be bad!
I cant imagine spending that much money, time, and effort on this movie, and letting that pitiful plot slip through!!!

The effects of this movie were amazing, and I hear that 3D is even better. The storyline was very good, it could have stood on its own without the effects, it was pro-environment anti-imperialist without being preachy or heavy-handed. I particularly liked that there wasn't a lot of gore and s*x - most violence had no blood and no amputations, and the "s*x" scene was very brief and discreet - so that I would be comfortable taking my teen or younger to see it , like Star Wars when I was young! (Maybe I am wrong about what viewers can tolerate, since MovieTickets thinks the word s*x is profanity!) There was a lot of violence and swearing, but the I think story overcame that. The special effects mostly showed how beautiful the world was.

My wife and I were totally blown away. We saw it in 3-D, and if you don't, you're missing out. She got a little motion-sick from the effect, but not bad and I was fine. (Yes, it's that effective.)
Good story, believeable characters, well cast, amazing visuals. A must-see.

This was one of the most enjoyable movies I have ever seen. It was INCREDIBLE, and the 3D version makes you forget that you aren't on Pandora yourself.
I have never been one to get obsessed with movies, and I'm not into science fiction or fantasy, in fact I'm a business major focusing on learning Mandarin, SO it means a lot when I say that I AM OBSESSED and would TOTALLY dress up and go to an Avatar convention.
I am going to see this at least 3 more times.

For a little over two and a half hours I was treated to one of the most beautiful and uniquely satisfying movie experiences I have ever had in my life. I know the critics are fast to point out some shortcomings of Avatar, but I loved every second of it. Judging from overhearing the conversations of people leaving the theater, so did most others.
The 3D experience is pristine and creates an engrossing environment that I had never imagined could be accomplished. I still feel as though I am still having beautiful flashbacks into a journey through Pandora that I never actually took.
You must see this in theaters, and in 3D. I may even end up seeing it again, which I haven't done for any movie in the last 10 years.

There were no surprises in this movie but it was well done,... very well done. The presentation was magnificent. Typical story line but you didn't mind. The special effects/colors/imaginative alien world was exceptional. Take the whole family! Refreshing... no profanity whatsoever!!

James Cameron did a wonderful job on the details and every aspect of this movie! We watched it without the 3D with our kids and my husband and I plan on watching it again after Christmas in 3D. I've never gone to the theater twice to see a movie, but this one is definitely worth it!!!

I am afficionado of Cameron, so I can forgive a lot for the amazing special effects in "Avatar", which are absolutely mind-bending! I saw the regular and 3D prints and plan to see the IMAX 3D print ASAP. I've never done that before. Cameron has developed a groundbreaking new method of story-telling. BUT, "Aliens" had better hardware in 1986. The plot of this movie was too political, which, while I agree with the perspective, would have served the movie better if it were more subtle. While the profanity, provided realism, it seemed unnecessary. Finally, the Na'vi had not a sag or a droop among them! Must be the reduced gravity because it belies every National Geographic article on aboriginals I have ever seen.
Still, GO SEE THIS THING! WOW!

James Cameron has succeeded in using his talents to produce a great flick. Even with his societal biases in the forefront he has still managed to write a story that captivates the greatest audience. This movie will become the test for all future effects movies. I am always looking at the effects to check there accuracy for adherence to real world (or off world) physics. Assuming that Pandora has gravity close to Earths this movie earns A+++ rating on that score. All the scenes are amazingly detailed and bright and FULL, What depth!
I am going to see it again. If you saw it in 3D go again and see it in 2D, it is so much brighter, no loss of amazement.

This is a great movie! Loved all of it!! Three hours goes by fast! I only have one bad thing to say about it!! I would love to take my nephews to see it but it has 6 or 7 really bad words in it!! Like the F* bomb and GD bomb!! You take those words out of a 3hr movie and you have the all time best action movie for the whole family!! That was the only thing I was disappointed about!! Come on James??? Would have gave it a 5 star but the language knocked it down!!!

James Cameron has done some superior movies and filming that we have all watched and enjoyed. One of my favorites is " Titanic ' to it's details to the ship and it's interiors , that no other movie has ever done before. Now comes AVATAR ... another experience not only to the mind but to the eye. You feel as you watch, you are part of the movie and share their pain, and their love, for their people and their planet. The colors to the plants and trees is enough to excite the human senses. The interaction between the humans and the AVATARS , the planet , it's animals is wonderful. And you hope that you could yourself enjoy and live on this planet. I will probably go and see it again this time in 3D ! Do miss it.

Before I even begin it's important to know that I am a sucker for James Cameron films, I love them all. Avatar has amazing special effects and should win an Oscar. I really enjoyed the movie but the only thing that let me down was the all too predictable ending and how it dragged a bit. I knew exactly what was going to happen during the last 30 minutes of this 2hr 40 min epic. I still really enjoyed it and suggest it to just about anyone.
