Cameron didn't just paint a movie backdrop, he created a world. From the detail in the foliage to the insects and animals in the backgrounds, the special effects in Avatar are incredible. That said, it is a shame the plot line is so predictable, the main characters so stereotypical, the humans so inflexible in their actions and the final battle violence so gratuitous. Could have been much better.

I found myself visually captivated by this world and enjoyed the references to equipment and cast members from Cameron's ALIENS.
If you've seen ALIENS you'll see those references in the female helicopter pilot, Dragon1 ship, the Corporate Executive, and the single person "loader" used by the military. The Avitars themselves are a great concept and introduced in a way that seemed scientifically plausible.
The movie theme of Earth's Military and Corporations being the aggressor, being responsible for destroying a world and its people for a specific resource, and to exceed wall street profit expectations is not fantasy. It does stir emotion makes the audience think.
I will see this movie again and I fully recommend that you do to!

Visually Stunning. Was worried to take the kids due to a few reviews I had read. Could have dealt w/o a bit of the language, as it was unnecessary. It was predictable, unfortunately, but well worth the time. Did not see in 3-D, but think that would have taken away from the film and would have been distracting. (Don't get anything to drink! It is long!)

If you can get past the politics, this is a great movie. I didn't pick up on it, I just enjoyed the amazing graphics and beautiful scenery but my husband and some other very verbal movie goers were not happy with the political analogies. "Fight terror with terror" and shock and awe tactics. Plot is apparently similar to our war in Afghanistan/Iraq. Devestating another country/planet for it's resources, killing defenseless woman and children, not being in tune with our planet....
But again, I just enjoyed the movie as a movie and not a political statement. If you can do that you will thoroughly enjoy this movie. Maybe one of the most visually captivating movies I have ever seen.

I really enjoyed this movie. The visuals were beautiful, the concept of the way of living on Pandora was beautiful, and the message was beautiful too. I always know a movie is good when it is nearly three hours long and I still wasn't ready for it to end! I am looking forward to seeing this in HD when it comes out on BluRay.

The effects in this movie were truly amazing! I am glad the director held off on making it until the technology caught up with the idea (he originally planned for 1999 projected release) The story line was great as well! Loved all the characters!

Being an older movie fan, I was worried that Avatar would be aimed at a much younger audience. The story has as much substance in the writing as it has unbelievable technical delivery in the special effects and visuals. This movie is excellent for any age per its rating. The pace of the movie and symbolism kept drawing you into the story. Excellent way to spend almost 3 hours.

I love this movie. Second time I seen it. I like the way is used American Indian references throughout the movie. I would love to get a Native Americans prespective about the film, I am only a quarter Native American.
I would like to know why it took 11 years to make the movie though. I did leave the movie thinking that there will be more movies stemming from the first, so I hope I see something coming like Avatar 2 soon.
I did think the naming standards of the movie hurt it a bit. We all know there is a popular cartoon series and soon a movie from the cartoon series call "The Avatar" coming out next year and the naming standards of this movie is causing confusion.
Very good movie anyway. This is a must see movie.

I don't like science fiction movies and I'm not particularly fond of 3D stuff, but I went to see this on the recommendation of a friend. It was the absolutely best movie I've ever seen, primarily for the visuals. Unlike most stupid 3D stuff, this one made you feel like you were really there. This is going to set the standard of what 3D should be from now on.

The plot of the movie is one we have all seen before, but it still remains a solid foundation to build upon. The length of the movie was insanely drawn out. It took some time to actually get into something that would keep you from going to the concession stand. They expanded on side stories that we typically make assumptions about making it quite a bit longer than it needed to be. The action scenes made you want to throw punches to help the underdogs. The visuals were great. Overall the movie was good but would have liked to have seen more sooner.

This is the most visually stunning movie I have ever seen... and I've seen quite a few in my 50+ years. The life forms in the alien world of Pandora are completely believable and there is a plethora of them... animals, plants, insects, an entire ecosystem that is amazingly real and totally alien. The viewer is instantly transfixed and mystified and I didn't hear a peep in the audience throughout the entire show... it's like we were all stunned by the wonders that kept unfolding. I rarely feel inclined to see a movie twice in the theater but after I got home from seeing it I immediately went online and purchased tickets to see it tomorrow in 3D IMAX. Avatar is pure movie magic at its finest and most imaginative... a must see!

When, not if, you see this movie, only see it in 3-D. Why would you see it any other way. The 3-D effects made you feel so much more a part of the movie. The scenery was phenomenal. So beautiful. You wanted to reach out and touch it. The storyline was interesting and kept your interest for the full 2 1/2 hours. What is the most amazing part of this movie is that most of it is computer generated and it became so easy to forget that the characters in the movie were not real. Go see it and then see it again.

I can't believe that this movie was 2 1/2 hours long. It sure didn't seem like it. The movie was over so fast I didn't realize that it had been over 2 hours. The story was fantastic and easily followed. It was a fantastic story and the special effects almost didn't look anything but real. It's a real can't miss for any Sci-Fi/Fantasy buff. I loved it!!

Amazing action that keeps you focused for 2.5 hours. Special effects and creativity were fantastic. Very well put together. Dont waste your money on 3D. I cant speak for the Imax experience (yet.) I really enjoy Cameron's movies! You wont be disappointed with Avatar!

Very good but with some flaws. However if you are looking for a witty and plot filled, character developing story, this movie isn't for you. The visuals, particularly in 3D, were very good. The plot is predictable.

The universe is absolutely stunning, comparable to nothing I have ever seen... so gorgeous, unique and intriguing that I wished I could watch much of it in slow motion just to enjoy the works of art passing across the screen.
Watch interviews with producers and actors of this film to fully appreciate this remarkable, refreshing film. It is technically not “animated” at all, but "captured performance." The actors in this film had to train physically for months to do the stunts in the film and even facial expression and therefore depth of emotion is captured. The producers talk a lot about how they wanted everything to be believable and they have succeeded, with the exception of one battle scene.
Story not new, but presented well...

We saw this movie in 3-D. I thought the special effects were pretty awesome. The story line owas pretty good; although, it has been used before. The movie went by pretty quick for being a movie that was over 2 1/2 hrs long. I would recommend seeing it on the BIG screen to capture the whole feeling of the movie.

I considered this to be a very modern ferngully. It obviously is not for the youngest of children like the old cartoon movie but definitely hits the nail on the head of how greedy and heartless the human race can be. I have already recommended this movie to everyone, and absolutely loved it. I'm not a tough critic but it takes a pretty good movie to make me want to go see it again in the theater. All the bad ratings this movie received were from people who obviously don't have much of an imagination and definitely don't know a great thing when they see it. GO SEE THIS ONE!! YOU"LL LOVE IT.

Movie was great- hard to keep up with because of the theater. 2nd row back-hard to keep up. Im in my early 40's, couldnt see the movie all that well and theater was full. Ask to get a raincheck, NO CAN DO! Hartkins in Avondale AZ on McDowell Road. I guess I complained too much I couldnt see it that well, they almost threw me out-jacka**es!!!!

This movie had outstanding special effects. If you liked Star Wars, you will like this movie. I spent the first half of the movie just trying to figure out what was going on though, it was confusing. All in all, I would say I do recommend it to most people. They could have told the same story in 2 hours or less though. Sigourney Weaver's character was kind of odd because she is portrayed as a nasty mean person in the beginning but then was Miss Compassionate later on, like her entire personality did an about-face. I liked it that they had a paraplegic actor in the leading role and that he could be a fearless warrior in the other land. Sort of cool in that way.

Saw the movie in IMAX 3-D which was amazing. Graphics and special effects were exceptional, both beautiful & creative. The message of the movie doesn't really hit you till almost the end. The message is familiar and has been told before, but this movie delivers a dose of spirituality (w/o bieng religious) along with it.
