Good enough for the hype. The visuals were the real stars here. It is obvious that the technology is state of the art. The movie would not have been possible 5 years ago. Don't expect much in the area of good storytelling but expect to have fun nonetheless. I would have given it another half star if it was possible here.

Did not see it in 3D. I would have jumped out of the seat if it was in 3D. I now will be able to handle 3D after seeing the movie and knowing what to expect. I intend to see it in 3D. Very good story and acting. I was impressed.

James Cameron is an innovator. He creates a world that is an integration of live-action and computer enhanced performances. While many may feel the story line is predictable-- an indigenous people with resources coveted by a more "civilized" race; his interpretation is a new and inventive master piece of new filmmaking technologies.
Even if you are a critic of the message--we are all connected and everything we do affects one another; this movie is worth seeing and you WILL be talking about it long after you have left the theatre.

I did not see the 3D version, but the visuals were very impressive. However, after the first hour, I wanted a script to match the visuals and it was no where to be found. Instead, the script runs like a dopey Disney fairy tale. I really don't know who to recommend this movie for. My closest guess would be 12-13 year olds.

I enjoyed this movie and think it would be great for kids if it wasn't for the use of foul language. Using the GD word several times was totally unnecessary. Other than that the movie was very good. I wish we had seen it in 3D.

All right - like others have said, the movie was predictable, "borrowed" from other movies, etc, etc, blah blah....
Big deal! This really was an incredible movie. The visual effect make this movie worthwhile. It was a little long, but I didn't want to miss anything. This is so well done that I actually forgot that I was looking at a CGI world.
I recommend this be seen in the 3D as intended.

This film was too hyped. Sure the special effects were impressive and for that I'd give it 3 stars alone. But beyond that the writing was predictable and lame and the acting was mediocre. The whole film would have been just as average but more enjoyable if about 1/3 of it was left on the cutting room floor.

This movies was incredible! Sure its story was a familiar one but who cares every story is borrowed from something. but the way Cameron marries the story with the effects and lovable characters truly makes this movie a joy to see. It is long so be prepared but the time flies by and you are never bored. And pay the extra few dollars and see it in 3D it is SO WORTH IT!!!!!!

The special effects were terrific, the plot was predictable, the script was uninspired.
Overall fun to watch, but nothing you've not seen before.
The film was almost ruined for me by the totally lame love-theme over the credits.

As my 12 year old son said, "Avatar was basically like the story of how some Europeans who came to the New World didn't respect the native people or their land, but 100 years in the future instead." The story was so much a copy of Dances with Wolves that I don't know how Cameron didn't strive to be more original. Special effects were very nice - sometimes too much (e.g. *Everything* had 6 legs or 4 eyes and was blue and glowing )

Didn't think it looked that hot on the previews. Last week about 6 of my friends called freaking out about it. Saw it last night and it was amazing. One word.."Beautiful". Every person I know has gone to see it twice and I'm about to do the same. 3D is a must, IMAX 3D should be mandatory. Saw it in regular 3D. Save yourself a trip and see it at the IMAX. It will blow you way!!

How do you spell 'Rip-Off'… ? I spell it A-V-A-T-A-R. James Cameron and company should be charged with grand larceny - so many of the really good films of the past 30 years simply got bits and pieces spliced together for a super contrived story line and used as an excuse to produce this 'new' film. Are you watching Star Wars, Aliens, Dances with Wolves, Apocalypse Now ... or what? I'll grant Cameron the eye candy effects, but Geeze, he even purloined Sigourney Weaver .... For all the effort put into the new technology I simply expected more. It just goes to prove, effects can't trump a good story...

Will actors be obsolete someday soon? "What if" an "avatar" version of an imperfect person (or dead actor) could be created from an image...get ready for serious re-makes. Technologically breathtaking movie, well acted also. The patent tree-hugging (literally!) plot elements were annoying, as was the perfectly-peaceful-amongst-themselves nobel savage portrayal.

James Cameron is a genius. This is the best movie I have seen...EVER. The cinematography mixed with special effects and overall concept can only be described as the work of a pure genius. This movie should be viewed as James Camerons vision planned and that is in 3D. I went with my husband and even after 3 weeks the theater was packed and not one person even got up to go to the restroom throughout this entire movie. We will definately be going to see it again and again and it will become part of our video collection when it is released for home sales. You just cannot miss this one!!! SUPERB!

Avatar is a great original sci-fi film that not only appeals to sci-fi fans, but anyone who wants to see a great adventure that is original and unique. I would recommend seeing this movie in imax 3D. The visuals of this moving are stunning, but watching them in 3D makes the audience feel like they are part of the world that they are watching. This movie is unlike any other film i have ever seen, and its good to see something original when Hollywood seems keen on making sequels and remakes.

Took the whole family and this film was enjoyed by all 10-47 years old. My 10 yr old son said it was the best film he ever saw. We enjoyed the 2D version so much we are going to see the 3D version this week. Fun, fast paced, beautiful effects, and good villains and heroes. Teaches good values and makes kids explore their feelings about how we as a race conduct ourselves. Go see this film.

My husband and I never watch movie in theater for 12 years. Just renting movies and watching at home. But when I saw the trailer of Avatar over the internet, it got me intrigued. It was really a good movie! Graphics, story line, action, the animated place, characters, everything is excellent and well created!!! For the first time my husband was awake, didn't fall asleep the whole movie!!!

Yes-- this movie was average, but i was not impressed. Avatar was good in 3D-- but it was WAY too long and i got very bored with it. The scenery was beautiful. It also was confusing until the ending. Beware to parents with young children-- DO NOT BRING THEM-- there is a lot of swearing. Lastly, since it is in 3D people get sea sick because of the fast movement on the water. I can not believe this movie beat Harry Potter in the box office.

OMG! What an excellent movie experience. Watched the 3D version, but if I go back to see it again, I'm going to get IMAX tickets. Never a dull moment, visually, or plot- wise. The place was packed, so get there 30 minutes early unless you don't mind sitting in the 1st 2 rows, or begging people to move over (seems everyone wants to save an extra seat to put their jackets and purses on...yes, I actually had to "persuade" folks to give up their personal storage chairs so I could sit next to my husband in the mid level seating area). Never a dull moment thruout. Worth the extra money to see this flick!

Avatar is stunningly beautiful and deserves to win many awards.
However, stripped of the amazing visuals, the plot is simplistic, predictable, and pessimistic.
Isolationism is presented as the ideal, there is no value in progress, trade, or sharing between cultures. Humans have ruined Earth and are to be turned away by other cultures who might help us. Even when one of our own can bridge the cultural divide, he then offers not the open hand of hope but the closed fist of rejection. He quickly rejects his roots and condemns his world to doom. Nice.
If you have a more hopeful vision for the future of humankind, go see the movie and have fun. Ignore the plot and reject the vision. We are better than this.

My husband conned me into watching this movie which i had no idea what it was about and based off the previews I didn't want to see it. After seeing it, it was an absolutely amazing movie. The over all story and pictures were amazing. I would recommend it to everyone.
