This film is amazing. It's got heart, action and intrigue. I didn't always know where it was going or how it was going to get there.
HOWEVER, at the end of the film I shed a tear because this new film annihilates all things Star Trek that I grew up with as a kid.
They used the time travel card & drastically changed the history we have grown to love.
It's now probable that all characters in TNG (Picard, Riker, Jordy, etc.) which takes place 80 years later, will not even be born, let alone live the same lives & accomplish the same great thing. That's just really sad.
The Star Trek universe is so large; Did they have to erase TNG, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and all episodes of the original series?

Star Trek is incredible.
The movie starts, grabs you, and never lets go. I have rarely experienced anything like this in any movie, let alone a Star Trek movie. So much happens during every frame of this film that my mind is still trying to process it all.
The acting is perfect....the effects are jaw-dropping. When the Enterprise is first revealed, it took my breath away. As the ship drops out of warp, heading to Vulcan, a lump developed in my throat andI gasped. Each new scene is another emotional rise or drop.
This film is not just gorgeous effects and snappy editing. There is a weight, a severity, and a meaning behind it, and the story has the depth and maturity to knock the wind out of you.

I am not a big Star Trek fan but the action packed previews with some cool special effects were enough to convince me to see it on opening night. This movie was awesome and lived up to all the hype! I have no complaints about it at all. It didn't even seem like a two hour movie and it kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. Definitely go and see it!

I very much enjoyed this movie. A well thought out retelling of the Star Trek canon. I believe Roddenberry would be happy with this new version, which is, mostly, in keeping with the Star Trek mythos. Did we really need a romance between Uhura and Spock? I think not. The few things that I have a problem with are some of the set designs. These things are: the engine room,because it looked like a factory or warehouse, with too many girders; shuttle bay because of girders and the layout. Another area was the waterpipe scene. What the heck was that!? A Water works? On a star ship? Big Pipes? And finally the design of the engine nacelles. Over all, like I said, a very good movie, 4.5 stars.

this movie was awesome and star fleet academy was filmed on my school campus. I didn't really know anything about the original star trek, but friends wanted to go. I expected to be bored and confused, exact opposite. there were no boring parts and the pace of the movie was great. GO SEE IT IN IMAX!!!

This movie did a great job of bringing both new and old Trek fans into the story. This movie gave enough information in the development of the characters to help the new fans get into the story. Also, the references and and some of the jokes/one liners appeal especially to the fans who have been watching a while. Ok- first off, I've never watched a complete episode of Star Trek in my life. I've seen parts of episodes, so I got some of the references (which the movie heavily plays to!), but overall, the show wasn't for me. The movie, which is essentially the prequel to the show more than the previous Star Trek movies (as I've been led to understand) is awesome. I went because I'm a fan of JJ Abrams, who directed, and I was not disappointed! It was a really good film, some plot holes, but just a fun watch all the way around. FYI- if you're not a Trekkie and you watch it with some, be prepared for spontaneous (and I felt, gratutious) fan love! Enjoy...

This movie was absolutely fantastic! It kept with the original themes and stories (watch it to the end, you'll see), and still kept it fresh, original, fun, exciting, and a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I'm a long standing fan and found this movie to reinvigorate the stagnated series. They kept with the true character relationships and still had a story to go along with it. And for those that have never seen or cared to see Star Trek... It is not the old Star Trek that you have made fun of or groaned at for years. It is fresh and new, and full of action to keep you engrossed. I hope everyone gives this movie a chance, as it is well worth it. I am completely shocked and thrilled!

I went in with an open mind. A lot of bashing was going on before, and I distanced myself from that to be partial. SO! The cast / acting was spot on. The FX were cool as well. The timing of the movie was great as time passed quickly. The movie did not leave me with a WOW! I need to see it again feeling, but it did not leave me hating it either. I am torn over it. Abrams said this movie was not for "Trekkies" and he is right. If you love fast paced action this movie is for you. If you are a die hard TOS fan then this is not the movie for you. JJ said that by the end of this movie, they can tie in to TOS and beyond. But not spoiling anything here, some classic TOS episodes can not happen now due to this movie.

I've never been much of a Star Trek fan myself but I decided to see this on opening night and loved it. Particularly, I was a fan of the use of narrow angle lenses that made everything seem bigger. It gave a sense of the vastness of space that was really kind of awe inspiring.

I think it will be the best movie of the summer. you did not have to be a trekie to appreciate it however it was rich with trekie genera. The character development was great and well worth every minute. story was epic, action was tight, characters were sexy, now to be a bit more critical.... sulu's fight scene was weak, he should have kicked butt. and entering the atmosphere in a body suit...hot yes. deploying a standard parachute??? totally disappointing. jet pack, gliding suite, rocket boots, it should have been a snowboard that acted as a heat shield, then a gliding suit with short wings and then a high tech para sailing chute.

I, in fact, enjoyed this movie MORE than "Iron Man". I liken them to one another because of the overall enthusiasm surrounding this movie, not to mention, they were both released in the same month. It takes the best aspects of "Iron Man", the enthusiasm, the fun, the thrills, and combines them with the sheer care for the source material that is needed for a successful reboot like "Batman Begins". The casting, acting, special effects, storyline, pacing, stunts are all top-notch, and this is coming from someone who's NEVER watched a Star Trek episode or movie in his life! The film is constructed so that the viewer doesn't need to have seen any previous Star Trek memorabilia. I can't wait to see it a 2nd time this weekend.

an absolute mess of a movie. It wastes the first 40 minutes introducing the characters. The plot was lame and the writing was terrible. JJ Abrams gloats that he knew nothing about Star Trek before he made this movie. Maybe it would have helped to pick a director who appreciates what Star Trek means. You can reboot a franchise (i.e. Batman) and make it fun and take it in a new direction. The actors who played Kirk and Spock were dead on perfect. Its the script and the director that failed this franchise. A completely boring and uninspiring movie.

I thought this was a great movie. While a die hard Trekker may have some problems with some things, I do not.
This is by far my favorite of all the Trek movies. I think it is great that the movie rewrites Trek history as we know, and they did a great job with Spock explaining the way it used to be.
They did stay true to a lot of the original stuff. It was great seeing Kirk beat the Kobayashi Maru. As we all know, he is the only one to ever beat it. :-)
All in all...obviously, I thought this was a great movie, cant wait for the sequel!

I had been SO leery of an "outsider" doing a Star Trek movie. I am 44 and have been watching the show since reruns in the mid 70s. If you are like me, you need not worry.
I never once wondered what time it was, the movie FLEW by. And my friend who went with me has never seen any incarnation of Star Trek and she was amazed by this movie and wants to see it again.
If you are a lifelong fan like me, just a heads up that the scenes with Leonard Nimoy are wonderfully touching. And the actor who plays McCoy? Dead. On. He has every mannerism, inflection, tone. etc down - he's like channeling DeForest Kelley and in the BEST way!
I can't wait to see it again!

The technology has finally caught up with Star Trek. This is the way Star Trek should look. I hate being disappointed by a movie I have been waiting for for so long. Star Trek delivers! The opening scene started it out right. Gritty, dark, and tense. Command decisions in the first scene make the captain's chair that much more ominous.
Character development was excellent. Kirk and Spock's background were what we've always wanted to know. The special effects were amazing, from the fleet entering warp to the Enterprise exiting warp into a debris field. I literally couldn't wait for the next scene. They just got better and better. The new time line will be interesting and I will be chomping the bit waiting for the next one.

As a looong time fan, I was very worried about this movie. How could they take such a set of iconic figures, remake them with an unknown cast, and have it be any good?..boy was I wrong.
The actors must have studied every little nuance of the original characters because they were spot in in body language, voice inflection, facial expressions, etc. There were times when I really could imagine I was looking at the younger versions of these characters.
This was EXACTLY what the franchise needed to revive itself. I hope the cast goes on to make a whole new set of movies and I'd love to see a new TV show! This is a must see, in fact, I'm going back again tonight!!

As you would expect, the special effects were excellent and the action was solid. If you're a fan of the series then you're likely to be very happy with this film. It was an enjoyable romp through the formation of the crew that we know and love. Kind of like the Baby Looney Tunes version of the original, with effects they could only dream of.
Though no member of the cast is likely to get an Oscar nod, the performances were consistent and appropriate to the series. I also found the casting to be interesting and enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the sequels.
Of course, you need to make sure your disbelief is fully suspended, and you probably don't want to overthink the plot. Just take it for what it is and enjoy the ride.

Star Trek has been released from what had become a decidedly stale franchise! The new movie honors the solid storytelling of Roddneberry's Trek universe at every level while not being afraid to take plot twists and emotional turns that surprise us all. But, I won't give anything away here.
The movie hits all the emotional high points of a good story--tear jerking, laughter, victory and tragedy. Characters relate in ways that we all connect with and the action sequences are breathtaking. There are white-knuckle moments that made me cover my eyes.
For old guard Trekkies and newbies alike, this is a great film which provides what it promises--good solid entertainment!

I am a Shatner die-hard fan and wondered if I might be able to cross over to this new series. If you trust in the potential changes that can happen in upcoming movies and take this on it's own merits it is a fantastic movie. Unlike some previous movies where the rhythm was off there seemed to be chapter like sequences here. So you got involved for 1o minutes of action , got a short break and were pulled back in. If you like lots of space and action sequences you will love this movie. There is some very good writing that was done here . There is something for everyone.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
