Movie was great and lead to a whole host of other possiblities for future pilots and films.
I think they got Bones and Spock dead on. Scotty was an improvement, but I don't like the way they cheapened Ohura. She had a lot more class in the original, but Michelle Nicholas was ahead of her time and it would take an exceptional actress to replace her.
As for Kirk, he was passable. William Shatner will always own the part.

Fantastic for newcomers, but for a longtime fan like myself (and more into TNG, to be honest) there are a few plot points which serve to annoy or even offend outright, but altogether this is one helluva film, and worth at least one repeat viewing.
We all know JJ Abrams loves alternate realities, crazy CG monsters, shaky cameras, and lens flares, and there are plenty of each in this film. The trailers weren't just being smug when they said "this isn't your father's Star Trek"--it really isn't. Abrams is offering an origin story that doesn't just explain how each character came to exist, but actually provides an ingenious opportunity to re-define them.

Overall, this moving was amazing.
**Plot Spoiler Alert**
However, despite many other reviewers continuing to praise it for staying "true to the characters," I would like to point out that Spock and Kirk have no reason to stay true to nimoy and shatner.
In the Original Series, Kirk was raised by two parents, in this one he was raised by one. Spock had a planet, in this one things are a bit different.
Both of those experiences would have a profound affect on ANYONE, therefore, these two characters may be reinvented...the whole franchise has been reinvented and rebooted. Kudos to all. TWO thumbs, enthusiastically, up

JJ Abrams just destroyed 40 years of established star trek cannon. Acting is superb, special effects are probably the best ive ever seen. The story is the worst thing they could have done to a trekker........horrible.

this movie was a pleasure! for the fans and just plain movie goers. you don't have to be a die hard fan to enjoy this movie. it was entertaining and an absolute tickle for us to see how the characters were introduced and developed. the "younger" characters did great and look forward to a future movie with them all!!

Grew up watching the original series. The movie was able to carry it off with keeping to the spirit of the series...a few changes but that was okay. They had Bones and Scottie done though! Loved that! Very good action film and story line. Thank you!

Let everything go from the past, and you will LOVE this movie. If you're a purist, this is NOT the movie for you.
The new "Enterprise" is gorgeous, and the story has lot's of great surprises and twists (weren't we all sick of that stupid preview?).
Even my partner [who hates sci-fi (I know, but we've been together 25 years...what are you gonna do?)] loved this movie!
We laughed, we cried, we were on the edge of our seats. Go see this movie!

Excellent in every respect - from the casting to the performances to the amazingly suspenseful story, to the non-stop moving camera work, to the extremely clever plot twist that will allow a whole new set of narrative arcs to blossom forth, it was just wonderful. This die-hard original Star Trek fan will vow that the performances of the actors in this film are even stronger, deeper, more insightful, humorous, romantic and delightful than the originals. And that's really saying something.

THE GOOD
The new actors portrayed their characters very well. I love the costumes, sets, ship designs, and musical score. Good pace with plenty of sci-fi action.
THE BAD
Numerous plot holes, which is to be expected given that this is Star Trek and the plot involves time travel.
THE UGLY
Comedy scenes involving Scotty were juvenile. Why a water-coaster and a little alien friend? These sad attempts at humor were terribly out of place in a dramatic film.
SUMMARY
This movie is worth the $8 to $10 you'll spend. Catch it on the big screen, where you can really appreciate the epic space battles. Finally, the Enterprise can shoot more than one weapon at the same time! I'm looking forward to the sequels.

This movie was a Horrible Star Trek movie. Corny sound affects and music. Cinematography was poor. The plot line completely destroyed Star Trek Cannon. JJ abrams took something with a long history and damaged it beyond repair . If this was just a random space action movie it would have been great so if your not a True fan of Star Trek you will most likely enjoy it.

Certainly one of the best films I've seen in a while. With a summer that looks to be full of blockbusters, this one could be a serious contender.
I am admittedly not a huge fan of Star Trek, but I heard that this movie was made for people who don't really like Star Trek. I found, to my surprise, that when the movie was over, I wanted it to keep going! I would recommend this movie to any person that is looking to have their minds melded for an amazing 2 1/2 hour ride into the final frontier.

I was very encouraged by the movie trailer and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised to see they reinvented Star Trek and did not loose the relationships among the characters.
I would say this is a great back story meets action like we haven't see since Wrath of Kahn and special effects since Nemesis!
If you consider yourself a SciFi or Trekky you must see this film in theatres!

I grew up on the original Star Trek, so I had preconceived notions about the characters. This movie did the originial series justice. Though there were a few changes and a few inconsistencies (only a science geek and/or die-hard trekkie would pick them up), this movie really rocked. The characterizations were spot on, but there were also a few surprises. Kudos to all the actors. Gene & Majel Roddenberry are NOT rolling in their graves!

Loved the overall look and feel of the movie. The lighting, angles, and action sequences were great!
Can't say enough about the picks for the actors. They totally nailed it. Hopefully Hollywood realizes that they don't need big names to make a great movie. Of course, now these guys will have big names..
The writers stayed true to the lore of Star Trek, taking a few acceptable liberties here and there, but really kept to the story of the original characters.
Good job! I've seen better movies in the past year than I have seen in the previous 5 years! I hope Hollywood keeps this up!

That's something which has been hit or miss with previous Star Trek movies. There's no doubt this updated version was meant for the big screen and it doesn't fail to entertain. With that said, there are plenty of reasons for die-hard Trekkies to mourn - Vulcan is gone; the timeline that we have grown up with no longer exists. But you know what, to heck with the timeline. This is not your Dad's Star Trek, this is your son's (or your daughter's). Let them enjoy the Human Adventure in the same way we did, just a lot louder and faster.

This movie was very well done. Was suspenseful and kept me engrossed the entire time.
Some are bothered by the changes in former Star Trek history and timeline. I felt if it was a new beginning that this was appropriate.

Being a Star Trek fan, I absolutely LOVED the movie. Although the alternate reality made me skeptical in the beginning, the story played out beautifully. The casting was brilliant and action was non-stop. I would highly recommend for not only Star Trek and sci-fi lovers, but also for action movie lovers. I give it an A+!

Any Star Trek is good enough for me, but this one should be good for EVERYBODY. It has a few platitudes at the end (good for little kids), it has rivalry and quips (good for us older Trekkies), and it establishes the characters in pithy but interesting fashion. Everyone would enjoy this fast-acting but soulful journey of 2 hours and 6 minutes!

I strongly advise anyone who is planning to see this movie to purchase the prequel, "Countdown" before seeing the movie. It will enhance your experience even more. From the very beginning, I knew why Nero's second was asking the origin of the ship in question (by the way it is called "The Jellyfish" and it was designed by Jordi LaForge in the future specifically to explore quantum singularities.) and why Spock's image was used in that scene and why Nero hates Spock so much. Otherwise you have to wait for the mind meld scene and then you only get a 2 min. explanation that does not do it justice. I can't wait for the continuation. Now I'm going to see it at an IMAX theatre. Took my whole family, from age 10-43 we all loved it.

Being a long time fan of the star trek cannon, I have to admit that there are several things about this movie that bother me. Here's an optimistic nod to the writers for putting aside the rest of the star trek cannon in hopes of building a better future for the franchise. So I'm giving 4 stars, you'd better earn it.
