My opinions of Star Trek were formed by the fact that I am of the generation that actually watched the original TV series when it came out, so most of my standards are based on that.
That being said I think it is a great movie all by itself. What made it even better for me is the fact that it captures the comical interactions that I loved in the original series. If you liked the original series you will love this movie. Even my 17 year old daughter loved it.
I thought the story and cast were very good with the exception of Bones, I thought his character was a little weak.
The only negative for me was some of the unstable camera work that was added for effect was over done.

I was very impressed with the way this movie was made. It definitely outranks any of the other prequels I've seen in a while. It is a must see for all Star Trek fans and still a great movie for non-Trek fans.

I've watched Star Trek since I was a wee lad, and as I've gotten older I crave more intelligence from my science fiction. This has begun to color my view of extensions of Roddenberry's genius franchise.
Acting-wise, nobody is too 'out-there,' nor does anyone fall flat. Exciting writing had me laughing and wrapped up in the excitement of the film.
However, it works well as a action film, with very few of the cerebral issues that has me even still loving classic Trek. This "Star Trek" instead rebooted with a time traveler with a spot of Inigo Montoya issues.
To sum up, it's a popcorn movie in the same vein as Classic Indy or The Mummy. So go, have a good time.

Great Movie, but WHY !?
While I hand it to the film makers, a great action movie, solid story telling, loved the character interaction......Is this just a set up for the next round of Star Trek - the search for more profits?
As an old time trekker ( I saw the series when it was on the 1st time). I want to know how will they (the movie makers) deal with the MASSIVE continuity changes that this movie deals to the Trek universe. Or perhaps, with Gene and Majel both passed on, those who hold the rights to the franchise just don't give a ****!

I was completely speechless after this movie. Have always been a Star Trek fan, and as this film goes back to its roots, it makes me ecstatic to know this franchise is back again.

I thought I was going to see a prequel of the famous Star Trek TV series. Instead the writers have found a way to make this a whole new experience and plot that does not take anything away from the original story. But it leaves it wide open for its own birth and life. Absolutely brilliant!

i am an avid trekkie..i was a bit un-nerved when i read, and heard about the changes..but i am knocked over..by and far..if not one of the best sci-fi movies ive ever seen..one of the best..period..had it all..great effects..great story..and first and foremost..the new actors were all great..simon pegg especially..chris pine IS captain kirk!..cant wait to see it agian!

It keeps away many of the cliches and "camp" that come with Star Trek movies, and SciFi in general. Very sold Star Trek movie from a fresh new angle that will be entertaining for the Trekkie, SciFi fan, or the average moviegoer. Lots of action, solid storyline and believable characters.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is because I wanted more out of some of the characters. For that reason though, I can't wait for a sequel. It's a great movie, and a great Star Trek movie - for fans and non fans alike.

This movie was excellent! It was Star Trek that taught us to dream and to dream big. Our culture has lost that wonder in many ways and I'm excited to see this movie remade and create the sparks again.

it is a must see movie i took my girl who really doesn't go for the sci fi like me and she was enthralled ...it really wowed me not just the action but how they introduced each character that ive grown up with and not only found a way to make them fresh and new but they stayed true to them... Excellent follow-up to all the past ST movies and by far, the best!
I thought the previews would be the only exciting part of the movie, but Director JJ Abrams and the excellent cast pulled it off. Kudos to Mr. Abrams. The franchise will definitely live on. I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. Bravo! A must see thrilling space voyage that delivers on the pre-opening hype!

This was one of the best movies I have seen lately. It kept true to the original story. Any character/plot changes were explained by the plot line. I am usually disappointed in remakes and sequels, but not this time. There was plenty of action, with enough laughs for any orignal Trekkie. I plan to go back to see it so I won't miss anything.

An enjoyable night at the movies. Good casting, nice ensemble work, lots of action and humor. But I think that Nero is pretty average for Trek villains. His story could have been fleshed out more to lend some needed depth to the movie. Instead, he's mostly a device to launch Kirk and friends into action. But that's a small complaint. Overall it's a fun movie that will leave you anxious for the sequel.

This is the first star trek movie i've seen that I wouldn't mind having a sequel to with the entire cast they picked. Honestly everyone fit their roles perfectly. The movie was exciting, it brought you into the story, and meshed well into the Star Trek universe without trying to give everything a hollywood shine. The character they cast to play Bones was magnificent and even though I was worried about Simon Pegg he did a great job.
Do not hesitate, star trek fan or not you will enjoy this movie, I took three non-star trek fans and now they can't wait to see a sequel, JJ really outdid himself this time.

Awesome movie, can't wait to see it again. Great casting with terrific acting (esp. Bones) and there's actually a plot that plays out against the action. Sulu rocks now. I'm glad only Nimoy appeared b.c the new guys took it to a whole new level.

Story - 2 out of 5
Actiing - 4 out of 5 (they did good w/the strict they were given)
Effects - 4 out of 5 (I'd give it a 5 if the Enterprise wasn't designed so...UGLY)
So why a 3 out of 5? Well, it just didn't do it for me. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement.
I think the cast was great. I think the issue is the story. Perhaps, the only hope for this franchise is that Ronald Moore (STNG writer and producer) will agree to take on the next movie. Heck, look at Battlestar Galactica!

It's a grittier, less friendly version of Star Trek, a hybrid of the show, the Mirror Universe and the Battlestar Galactica remake. Chris Pine is an impish, rogue Kirk chock full of testosterone, swagger and a sort of 90210 believability. Zac Quinto's sensitive "Sylar Spock" is the vulnerable Vulcan, out of the closet about his human half and adorably psychotic because of that. Uhuru is rewritten as untouchably smart and sexy. Sulu is a little less bright, Chekov is brighter, and Scotty is hysterical. I personally liked Eric Bana's "Bones" McCoy for voicing the signature DeForest Kelly surliness as a mean-spirited divorcee.
But it ain't 100% Trek. Roddenbury's utopia is more like the original Heavy Metal cartoon or Doom III.

I grew up with William Shatner as my idol on the original Star Trek series. I think they did any excellent job recreating the original characters without compromising either the old or new characters as they each took on their own personalities to an extent. The tie in to the old Star Trek through Leonard Nimoy was great and I loved who they chose to do "Space the final frontier..." I also liked the tie in to the original series through the popular lines they used in both. I could truly enjoy a new series with these new characters and I am 55 years old.

Since day one I was skeptical about a TOS movie. Nervous that J.J. Abrams would lack the genuine undertones that made Star Trek what it is today. I held no great expectations and watched in horror as Star Trek became a mainstream trend =O
Like the loyal Trekkie I am, I combed every moment for flaws and irregularities. But beneath the blinding strobe of lens flairs, the only thing I could come up with was the number of phaser and photon torpedo canons on the Enterprise was absurd.
J.J. Abrams has created a beautiful thing here. He left us with an open door to breathe new life for the next generation of Trekkies, but at great risk of taking it too far. This fantastic tribute to TOS could go the way of the TV Series Enterprise.
