I knew nothing about the history of the comic book lore going into this movie - but this movie totally delivered the total popcorn movie experience. The movie pacing was swift, it was very well acted, the villains were evil and our heroes were flawed. The sound and the CGI were amazing and never let you forget there was a human in the suit not just a robot on the screen. The thing I enjoyed most was the fact that the movie didn't try to be neat and have all the pieces fall together perfectly and the people be perfect too. Another big thumb up to the Stan Lee appearance.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who wants to not feel like they wasted their money at the theater. Oh and don't leave too early - there is definitely a pay off for staying to watch the credits!

When I first heard about a live-action Iron Man movie in the works, I have to say I was highly skeptical. As a comic book fan, I have been disappointed over and over on the retelling of origins in movie adaptations. Don’t get me wrong! With one or two exceptions, I have thought that the recent string of Super Movies in the past decade have been fantastic. I have just been disappointed in the way Hollywood has discarded a wealth of story arcs, characters development and back-story in search of the almighty dollar.
My fear over how well they would adapt the Iron Avenger started with the animated flick released a couple of years ago to DVD. While it was a well done story and had decent animation, they completely threw out Tony Stark’s personality, motivations and demeanor. The names were the same, but the story was changed to protect the innocent. Would they do the same to the live-action?
I was really afraid when I heard they signed Robert Downey Jr. to the lead roll. Hadn’t he been fired from numerous past rolls for (in no particular order) being late to set, not showing up to set, attitude while on set, showing up drunk to set, showing up high to set, etc.? Would he even make it to the end of production? Then, I thought “Well, he has the part of a millionaire playboy down pat. He’s kind of perfect for the roll… If he can stay clean long enough to do it!”
Then came the rumors. They had to change the origin a bit. I mean, Vietnam ended over 30 years ago. Conveniently for the writers, the US can’t stay out of other countries for too long, so they had Afghanistan to work with. At least it wasn’t Iraq. While yet another terrorist based story didn’t thrill me, I could see the need for the change.
Previews. Blast! They looked really good! How dare Hollywood give me hope that this could be a decent flick! Let me go in with low expectations and I might enjoy the movie, even if it’s sub-par. But hope? Yeah, the previews were really good. Would the movie disappoint?
Finally, I saw the movie. In a word? WOW! I loved it as a story. I loved it as an action flick. I even loved it as a comic geek! This is by far the most faithful recreation to date. And what ever you do, stay through the credits!

This ranks at the top of comic book-to-movie movies my kids and I have ever seen. The acting is surprisingly good for this type of movie. Before now, I would have never seen Robert Downey Jr. as a superhero type, but his acting, and comedic element of his character, was well beyond expectations. Special effects, and action scenes, were also very entertaining.
I just have one warning for other parents. There is a VERY sexually suggestive scene in the beginning of the movie, and a couple violent scenes that may be too much for young ones. Use your discretion and/or have your hand ready to cover eyes. :-)
We loved the movie and would highly recommend it.

Having been a fan of the comic and cartoon as young boy I was thrilled when I found out they were making this film. Iron Man starts with a bang and never lets go of the audience. With great casting all around, Robert Downey, Jr. takes this roll and embodies the character of Tony Stark and makes it his own. The action sequences were mind boggeling and the special effects are as amazing as they are remarkable! If you're looking for a movie that will make you laugh and have you on the edge of your seat at the same time..this is the film to see.
Easily the best film of this genre I've ever seen and will see again. Go Iron Man!!

IRON MAN is probably one of the best comic book adaptations to come out. Light years beyond GHOST RIDER, and Ang Lee's THE HULK. It was AS GOOD, if not better than some of the best comic book movies like BATMAN BEGINS, and the 2nd SPIDER-MAN. If Hollywood is planning on making any more comic book movies, they should take the 2hrs. to watch IRON MAN, and take notes!!

ironman was the best movie I have seen this year, it lived up to the hype. My only complaint is the begining was a little slow, but other than that the movie was AWESOME a must have when it comes out on dvd. Robert Downey and Jeff Bridges were at the top of the game and made you root for and aganist there respective characters.

Classic good guy/bad guy match up, computer technology that is beyond state-of-the-art (but is still very believable), a story line that works, and very special, special effects. I can't remember the last time the audience applauded several times during a movie. This was fun from start to finish.

I have to admit I was a little sceptical about Robert Downey Jr playing a superhero. BUT he did the character justice. You loved him from the opening scene. I came along for the ride with my boyfriend with reservations about it, but once we left the theatre I think I loved the movie more than him. I would recomend this to everyone.

This is a movie worth seeing even if, like me, you know nothing about the Ironman comic and could care less. The acting is great, with Downey Jr. and Bridges delivering compelling performances. Terrance Howard also played his role just right.
No Country For Old Men it ain't, but it's a fun movie with a lot of wit to keep you entertained if you're not drooling over the special effects like most of the diehards in the audience.

Just saw Iron Man last night - never knew anything about it, or the comic books, but I really liked the movie. Robert Downey Jr is fantastic - I think casting great actors (a la Christian Bale as Batman) is the new trend now, which allows the "action" movie to still have some depth and heart, which this does. It was funny, it had great action and tricks, and the main character was really well-developed, so you got where he was coming from. A definite see!

This along with Spiderman II does a fantastic job of taking you away and along for a great ride. Everyone can enjoy this film. Robert Downey Jr. is excellent as Tony Stark and the supporting cast nails it and gives the film a lot of depth. Marvel has set the bar very high. This is definitely a must see movie for this summer!

Finally a Marvel movie on par with Batman Begins! The Spiderman franchise really took a turn for the worst and left me wondering about the direction that Marvel movies were taking, but this eases all of my worries (at least until Hulk comes out later this summer).
Casting/acting is dead nuts on. Special effects were great (why they couldn't make Superman Returns' flight scenes as good as this is beyond me). Most importantly the story is perfect. The origin is close enough to the original while still keeping both feet firmly planted in reality, and yet you never say to yourself "Yeah right, like that would ever happen.". It's not one of those movies where you ever feel critical of what's on screen because the film makers aren't reaching for what's not there.
It's a great movie, but make sure you stay through the credits for the BEST easter egg in movie history. If you love comics and aren't staying for the BIG finish, you're just a poser.

Everything about this movie works -- the writing, the acting, the action, the effects. I would rank it as one of the top 3 comic book superhero movies ever (alongside Burton's Batman and X-Men). Casting Robert Downey Jr. in this role was a stroke of genius -- not only is he a great actor, but his own personal story of dissipation and redemption so closely tracks Tony Stark's that it brings an added bit of heft to the role. Doesn't hurt that the writing is spot-on, the perfect combination of comic-book mock-serious and sassy-funny that Downey can deliver as few can. The supporting cast is fabulous as well. And the gear... oh my God, the gear. The Iron Man lab and costume is about the greatest on-screen tech machinery I've ever seen, a real gearhead's wet dream. This is truly a fine film -- go see it.

This movie was fun, fun, fun! There are moments when the audience cannot contain their laughter, cheering and applause. In spite of the 2+ hour run time it never drags and the deleted scenes alone will probably be worth the cost of the DVD when it comes out. The cast was on target. The acting might have been a little more reserved emotionally than some people would like but that would have broken away from the comic book unless you want to see Tony Stark's cold, dark, angry side. We get to see his more entertaining side and that's not a bad thing.
The movie has an abundance of gadgetry and special effects. The suite is probably the best movie prop (character?) ever. Part of the reason the movie is so long is it spends a lot of time on the development of the suit. What could have been lifeless and boring has been turned into some of the funniest, most entertaining and fascinating moments of the movie. You end up wanting to believe the suit can actually fly.
If you are a fan of the comic, you will be pleased that the movie stays fairly true to the original story. I think Stan Lee had a little more say in this one than some other comic licenses and he makes his usual cameo appearance. Comic fans will also catch several references to things that happened in the comics which are intended to be an inside joke the rest of the audience will completely miss. Some people might fault the movie for having a political message... but they may not understand the comic came out during the Viet Nam war and some politics are inevitable. This may be the only time it is appropriate to introduce Iron Man in keeping with his origins.
There is little that is inappropriate for kids here. Sure, there is some alcohol, and there are some risque references, but I've seen worse on network TV. It's such a small part of the movie it should not be a problem for most people. There is violence and that will be more of a determining factor of whether to take a child to see it or not. Wonderful gadgets, special effects, laughter, villains, a hero, and a definite hit. Comic fan or not, there is plenty in this movie to entertain you. One question... when is the sequel?

I love Superman,and the other action heroes, but no other actor has ever played the character and his alter ego dead on like Robert, which makes the movie not only well written and directed, but acted on to hilt. THIS IS THE BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE of the summer. Worth the wait and worth the trip! Waiting for sequels!!!!

This was one of the best comic book movies I have ever seen. Just like this review title states, it was a very fast 2 hours because I was completely pulled in and lost all track of time. The cast was great, the story was great, the special effects were great. The only part that could have been better was the very beginning. There were just a few logical flow issues for me but they were not enough for me to not completely enjoy myself. I want to see it again.

Excellent modern telling of the Iron Man story and a great movie for those who don't know it. Robert Downey was PERFECT for this part!
If you are a comic book fan in any way, make sure you stay until after all the credits!
