I don't read the Chronicles of Narnia. I visit Narnia at least once a year; and I've been doing it for about 30 years now. So you may consider it authoritative when I say that they didn't exactly use the novel as a shooting script.
You may also trust the word of a premier lover of Narnia when I say, in response, "So what?"
The condensation of Prince Caspian's backstory is brilliant.
I fell in love with the actors playing the Pevensie kids in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe", and I love them still. I thought then that they really looked as if they could be brothers and sisters; growing up has changed that a bit, but not seriously.
I very much enjoyed Ben Barnes' acting as Caspian. I always saw Prince Caspian as younger, and blonde. Their vision differed from mine and I couldn't be happier.
On to the "Why?" department (Warning: Slight Spoilers Ahead): I understand changes have to be made to translate a novel into a movie. But I don't understand why the animosity between Caspian and Peter, nor why it never is resolved to my satisfaction.
The Telmarines seem disturbingly Hispanic to me. I wish the ethnic resemblance could have been lessened.
Why add the who sequence about trying to take the castle? Do the moviemakers genuinely think we're too stupid to realize the stakes without this violent and, I think, unnecessary, addition to the plot?
My wife and daughter didn't for the romantic element. I loved it myself.
Bottom line: at the end of the movie, I was holding back tears of joy. They translated this novel very well. I liked it better than the first one. And I'm already marking my calendar for May 7, 2010, when "Dawn Treader" is scheduled for release.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I took a group of 7 seven year old girls and one 9 year old boy. They very much enjoyed. It was a little more geared to boys this time with the fight scenes, but they were tastefully done -- just enough to keep all the boys enthralled but not so much that the girls didn't like it.

I saw it last night with my boyfriend, who is also a fan of the Chronicles. We absolutely loved it. Now i have not read the books--i am going to purchase them tonight, though--so i cannot tell you how faithful or unfaithful this is, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
it is indeed much darker and more political than the first, but that was okay. it was enough politics for me. the children have matured as actors, and Ben Barnes (Caspian) is an excellent addition.
So, yeah--i thoroughly enjoyed it, and will be seeing it at least once more while it is out in theaters.

Even though the movie didn’t go by the books story line I was still awestruck. The role of Aslan being the only true source of power and showing that things cannot be done on our own strength was beautiful. I was tearing up most of the time because of the cross between God and Aslan and how this book portrays a minor spectacle of God’s glory on earth. I believe CS Lewis caught a glimpse of what Gods creativity and imagination might be like. How everything is unique, different and something we cannot comprehend here on earth. The story line is what meant the most to me. We are weak and He is strong, unconditional love and grace and forgiveness. I think the film done a great job with the characters. A few things bothered me….why did Susan need to kissed Prince Caspen …that wasn’t needed at all. Love was clearly visible between both of them without the kiss. Also the battle was drawn out to long and the ending way to short.

The visual effects and acting were far superior to the first movie. However, the it suffered from the same lack of plot and coherent drama. No character had any arc. They just moved from set piece to set piece. All though the battles were good and surprisingly dark for a children's movie, the character development was lacking.
There wasn't much 'there' there. Add to the fact that many of the action sequences are very similar to Lord of The Rings- a far superior movie- and all the weakness of this film become apparent.
Go if you are a fan of the books, it's been years since I've read them, but I hope they are better than this.

Ok so I adored the first movie. It had whimsy along with a good story line. This Prince Caspian movie had none of that. Not only was it not like the book, but the movie was a total bore. I have never yawned so much in a theatre and I think it was due to lack of story line. The first hour and a half of the movie is nothing but unending massacre. I admit I like a good battle scene, but this one seemed so long and drawn out that it left me uncaptivated. I mean the ENTIRE first hour and a half of the movie is nothing but sword fights and people dying . (Boring) So after an hour and a half we decided to leave--all I can say is that I hope the second hour of the movie finally came together---
No, I do not recommend this movie.

This second movie from the Chronicales of Narnia stories was really a treat. The characters were some of the most fresh from any movie I have seen. The movie stayed true to the story and had the audiance on the edge of there seats the whole time. None of the people who had attended with me wanted to leave the theater during the movie for nothing. A truly good family movie that leaves opening for much communication afterwards.

I must admit. It's been a while since I have read the book but even then I had noticed that the movie was not following the book word for word. Yet, that is tipical of movies that are based on books, they are never exactly the same. One needs to remember that being based on a book is different then a visual reprodeuction of the book.
I was with my cousin and her friend ages 10 and 13. The both LOVED the movie and I enjoyed it so I gave it a 5 out of 5 because its a movie for kids and they should be the ones rating it.

I believe the movie lived up to the hype. Not many movies can follow the story line to the T, and holding a movie to that expectation would be a dishonor to the book as well as the movie. I believe that the movie was as entertaining as the book. Although it may have strayed from the storyline here and there, overall I believe the movie is worth seeing.

What a wonderful film!
We enjoyed the first Narnia, as we have read the books, but the magnitude of emotions in the films leave us breathless! The cinematography is astounding! We will buy it, as soon as it is available. The nobility, sacrifice, and faith in these films are awe inspiring.
Worth every penny of the ticket price!

the sub-title of the movie is "Prince Caspian" but his story his somehow missing from the movie. The death of his father, of which he is so mad about at one point, is only alluded to, so the audience doesn't feel the same emotional hurt as he does. The story overall is also rather unclear. What is at stake is never really known for sure. Cinematically the movies bears resemblance to Lord of the Rings, and plot-wise, and even scene-wise, to Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, a privileged kid, outcast himself, leads a forest full of rebels against the ruling powers. The special effects are outstanding, and the character referred to as DLF "Dear little friend" provides some funny moments. This was not nearly as good as the first Narnia. The children are almost immediately transported to Narnia without the viewer actually knowing what's going on in their normal lives. the opening credits are spectacular.

I saw the movie with 11 family and friends last night and was very disappointed. The first movie was very true to the book and was excellent so we were anticipating more of the same. This movie is a big let down. The makers of this movie decided to "adjust" the story line significantly and while they tried to force in several different scenes from the book they really made this into a long boring story.
We had most of the kids we were with read the book before going to see the move. The 9 year olds were very disappointed that the movie did not follow the book.

Although it was interesting to see Narnia 1300 years later, the movie suffers from incredibly long lapses between few scenes of interest. Add to this the incredibly poor accent of Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian) and the movie falls to a pleasant C+.

After the hype I was really expecting a movie that could live up to the first. The characters were flat and the story was emotionless and slow. I was really disappointed in how the hero characters looked mechanical in some scenes especially the forest scenes when they first meet up with the kids. The one minotaur looked like he had a broken ear it kept twitching in an unnatural way. I guess I am more critical than most because I work in the industry I was really looking forward to this movie I loved the first one I thought it was spectacular I hoped that this would follow with the same emotional power and spectacle. The main problem was there was no clearly defined protagonist. It kept going from one person to the next. In the first you had the White Witch played by the amazing Tilda Swinton she was the one you could focus all of your attention to here you had multiple people from the king the kings court and the kings army it was just missing a focus I felt. I did think that the effects were brilliant the massive effect sequences used in the battle were top notch along with the cgi character work that Rhythm & Hues amazed us with in the first. I think technically it stands up to the first but the story fell really short of amazing.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
