I found Where The Wild Things Are to be much more engaging than I expected. I expected a mildly interesting tale with an unconvincing relationship between a real boy and a giant muppet. But what I got was a surprisingly intense tale about a disgruntled kid that was unreasonably determined to take his anger out on everything around him. Though what motivated such deep anger, and what ultimately made him see the error of his ways were vague and a little simplistic, respectively, I found myself fully involved and genuinely concerned about the characters. The fictional characters were compelling, convincing, and handle with sophistication and skill.

Growing up with the book, I loved it. It was a great take on the difficulty of childhood and finding your place in the world, as well as recognizing the importance of family. This is NOT a children's movie. I definitely think it's geared at people my age (high school/college age), because we grew up with this book: but my parents really enjoyed it as well. It's a pretty serious movie, but there's also some good humor.

I think each 'wild thing' represented something within Max. I just wished there were more imagination and less angst. Let me as a 35 year-old man, take a ride on less of a dark tale and maybe add more color and, well, hope.
You really start thinking of the wild things as real animals they were that believable.
My big disappointment was in the first scene of the movie when he is playing in the snow with the blossoming trees in the background. There were also other trees that would not have any leaves on them instead of dark green leaves. I saw it on imax, so maybe the background detail come s through more clear.
All in all... an interesting movie, but I left a bit sad.

My boys ages 11, 17, and my 10 year old neice, Loved it! Me and my sister in law (the over 40 crowd) enjoyed the look of the film and the acting but the story didn't have enough to hold our intrest and we found it kind of boring. I do give them credit though getting a whole movie from the childrens book. I wasn't quite sure how they were going to pull that off.

This is very close to being a truly wonderful movie. The visuals are stunning and achingly real. The performances, especially those of the young Max Records, James Gandolfini, Forest Whittaker and Catherine O'hara were superb. So what was missing? Oh my, the music. There was way too much music and it was mis-spotted and strangely inappropriate. Do we really need SONGS in a movie like this? If Mr. Jonze really wanted to distance his audience from the emotional impact of the film, he couldn't have chosen a better way than with this "score".

Great movie! I can't wait to see this again! I laughed and cried, and at times I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. It reminded me of my childhood and I could relate with the imagination, confusion, and personal growth. Watching this as a child I would have loved it because I grew up watching the good old stuff and had an appreciation for extraordinary. I'm surprised to see all of these malicious reviews. It’s a dissonance in my mind that some of the reviewers think the characters in this movie are “inappropriate,” when what I’ve seen on the current children programs are tasteless, unimaginative, cartoons with adult suggestive humor and poor-mannered characters. This is a beautiful movie with a warm and fuzzy ending.

Wonderful, thought-provoking film. Saw it with 4 children between the ages of 6 and 9. Enjoyed by all. Recommend that parents see the film together with their children in order to talk about the issues raised in the film.
Not your traditional children's film, so if you can't handle your children seeing awkward/uncomfortable situations on screen, this may not be the film for you. We, however, found it refreshing to see such a thought-provoking family film!

Never in my wildest dream did I ever think the book was about a troubled child from a disfunctional family. As with most films recently, it is very dark, full of bickering about nothing, and sad. I read the book in my childhood, and read it to my kids. We were all disapointed about the film. My 6 year-old kept saying "THAT is not like the book,right?" Right.

My nine year old and I waited forever for the movie to come out. I named my son after Max in this book. This movie is a story about family dysfunctionalism. There is no happiness in the movie whatsoever. That being said, I actually enjoyed the movie, however I am mortified that my son was there with me. He unfortunately picked up on the adult themes and human suffering that was being displayed. I am not the average prude when it comes to movies with my children so please take it to heart when I say, "DON'T BRING YOUR KIDS IF THEY ARE UNDER 10!!!!" See it first, then decide if your children should view it.

The only thing saving this movie is the performance by the young actor who played Max otherwise I would have rated it 0. He was excellent but the adaptation was just awful - agree with other reviewers - do not take children in which case, you can absolutely pass on it for yourself! Wish the young Max well and would like to see him in other films in the future.

While the book was a favorite of my childhood - this is not a movie for children... or for that matter many adults. That said, it is a profoundly brilliant film - one that forces us to consider emotions and issues that don't yet translate into words for the young lead… but nonetheless need to be dealt with. Rather than a tale of fantasy, this may be the most 'real' movie about being young and confused that has ever been made.

I was very excited to go see the film, and what a disappointment!!! I normally don't spend time reviewing films, whether I like them or not. After 10 mins of seeing the same things over and over (basically the little max self-indulging his violent ego in his fantasy land destroying things with the wild things), the film quickly looses steam. It's basically hard to salvage anything from the film apart from the cute sad animal facial expressions and luscious landscapes distilled over and over again throughout the movie. Had the film been a 15min short, it would have been just fine. Don't let the rave reviews fool you, or the nice trailer (the best thing about this movie unfortunately).

This movie started slow and never seemed to get going. Not for young kids, I feel it was way too deep. My husband was ready to leave after the first 15 min. My son fell asleep and my 11 year old was just bored. Not sure what the movie was trying to get across, but if you have read the book, leave it at that. Don't go see this.

I took my 7 yr old daughter to see this movie. It didn't scare her or any of the other children that were in the audience it seemed, but none of the kids seem to stay with the movie. It drug on and on with very little substance. The camera moved to the point that the picture was all over the place (made it very annoying). I am not sure what age group this movie was directed to, but it didn't appeal to my 7 yr old or to this 39 yr old. Most of us in the audience seemed like we were counting down the time for the movie to end and just leave. If it wasn't for the fact that we spent money on this that I can't get back we would of walked out. Now I know why the radio station was there trying to promote it....it needed help!

There is a lot more to this movie than to the extremely short illustrated book. The beginning establishes Max character very well so that the watchers can easily follow the characters on the island. My 11 yearold and her friend enjoyed the movie and when we discussed it on the way home--shock!-they actually got who the wild things represented from Max's real life and Max's own personality traits.
The movie is entertaining, Max playing Max is outstanding and James Gandolfini couldn't have been cast more perfectly or performed any better. Kids and parents will love it and it will give you something to talk about. Behavior modification could start here.

This is not a children's movie at all. It raises tremendous existential questions, questions to which humanity has no definite answers. Dark, anxious, uneasy and melancholic questions. The film deals with vey obscure matters providing no sense of closure with its ending. It is an absolutely awakening philosophical inquiry into the nature of angst, danger, family issues, loneliness, emotional pain, violence unhappiness, the meaning of life and death. Go watch it yourself if you want but please do not take your children. They will have to deal with these issues throughout their lives. Why expose them at such young age? It is a complete shame for our society that this film is being marketed as a childrens movie.

BORING!! my six year old didn't get this movie at all, and it was boring for me, his mom, who is 42. We left when the monsters finally came onto the screen because my son just didn't want to stay. Either stay away from this movie or rent it, because it wasn't very good!

This is not a movie for small children. My son (6) was terrified by the first scene and we left the theater. What a missed opportunity to make a quality movie about a CHILDRENS book that children of all ages could enjoy. I'm sure the costumes were great and all of that but this does no good if the audience is terrorized by the opening scene.

To me, this was the "Waiting for Godot" of kids movies -- it was a movie about nothing. While the costumes were astounding and the cast was talented, the script was horrid. I was counting the minutes until it ended. My kids, 7 & 9, were not thrilled either.

Something for young and old. Spike stays true to the spirit of the 300 word story and the look and feel of the visual while creating something original and fresh. Kids story ? Maybe....a moral that apply to all of us..absolutely. Enjoy the visual feast surrounding a very human story.
took my three boys (8, 8 and 10) and they all got very different things from it.

I liked this movie a lot for me - as an adult - the scenery, the metaphors about family and relationshps, etc.; but it was a little tough on my 5-yr old - the scary parts were too scary (hide my eyes please papa) and the continued strong, violent and negative ways that the Wild Things worked through their frustrations at times was a little over the top

As a person who read this as a kid, I was interested in seeing how they made a feature length film out of a 16 page children's book. The result is a great metaphor for growing up, dealing with anger, and pretty much showcasing childhood imagination. The problem is that the film is directed for kids who won't understand it at all, and, to boot, ends without tying up any of those connections at all. More than anything, the kids asking, "Why," to every slide of film buzzkilled this for me, and it's a terrible film to watch in every aspect away from that as well.

This was such a dreary movie. I took 3 little girls ages 6-8 and none of them thought it was any good. There are essentially no funny parts to counterbalance the serious topics. I would not recommend this movie to anyone looking to bring their kids to an uplifting film or a fun experience. I could maybe see teenagers relating to this story a little more, but it is still depressing.

I grew up reading this book. Nowhere do I remember it being about a violent troubled child. The movie is full of violence and is scary in parts. At one point, one monster rips off the arm of another monster. I was unable to follow the conversations between the monsters in some parts. This is more an adult movie than for children. To me, it was just encouraging my children to act as badly as the main character. They wouldn't understand Max was acting that way because of loneliness and being scared.
