This movie was a big disappointment. Our two girls 8 and 10 hated it. My wife and I saw no point to it. No plot, no humor, and any themes were several planes above childhoofd level. There was nothing to like, except the ending. As my 8-yr old said - "Daddy, I liked the ending the best. It was a happy ending - I was happy it ended." Save your money and time - this one is a looser.

I wanted to re-live the joy and excitement I had when I read the book as a child and hoped to share those feelings with my small daughters. Instead I came away very confused and a little disturbed. Firstly, it's pretty creepy to hear Tony Soprano as Max's friend, Carol. I was expecting him to wack Max and Paulie dump the body in New Jersey. Also, my daughers kept asking why everyone was sad and mean. Maurice Sendak was an executive producer, so I'm sure the vision met with his approval... so my question to you Maurice is, what went wrong? Were my childhood memories a lie? Yes, the special effects were excellent as were the directing and acting. Unfortunately I came away with the same confusion I had with Fellini films.

A somewhat depressing and monotonous story, yet magical in its imaginative scope. Early into the movie we are introduced to THE WILD THINGS as a depressed bunch who have apparently lost the taste for optimism in their existence, until the coming of the young boy, MAX. But you have to remember this is for children. What a child would see in this borders an imaginative paradise--a boy's more specifically-- without restrictions. It took me back to my days of forts made of chairs and bed sheets. In short, OVERRATED yet BRILLIANT, DEPRESSING yet MAGICAL. On the up side the animated robots are eerily lifelike and quite AMAZING. KUDOS TO THAT! But, If you simply must and have to see for it yourself though, I recommend seeing it high.

I found this film to be overbearingly sad and laden with themes that are someitmes scary to children...namely ..dark feelings..and despair..Max was unhappy with his home situation and was full of despair..as a result he acted out his anger very inappropriately..even biting his mother while in a rage....only to escape to a fantasy world where he found creatures with all the same problems...depression,anger management, insecurity, etc. My granddaughter and I usually look forward to sharing special experiences together.. this is definately one that we could have done without..

A well crafted film. A solid "A" for everything from costume design, acting and score to cinematography. However, seeing as the book was so short, there really wasn't much to go on, at least in terms of stretching it out into a feature length movie. In truth, while I understand that we were supposed to feel sympathy for Max and the Wild things separation at the end of the film, I found myself instead, relieved to be away from the overbearing, emotionally crippled pity-party that was the island full of Wild Things. That being said, I have the emotional range of a coffee cup, so maybe I'm not the best judge.

Not too scary. The whole "acting wild" thing is what's appealing to kids. If there is anything that would go over the heads of the really young viewers, it's the deeper message of the film- that family dynamics are complicated, that everyone has their own truth, that sometimes being in a family is hard & is not pretty, that despite these things, your family is yours & loves you. Is it a dark movie? Well, as any one who read the book knows, it is a pretty dark book after all, and the mood of the movie is true to this.It can't be lilley pads & rainbows all the time, ok? In my opinion, there is no need to shield your kids from a little bit of "dark mood" especially since it's an opportunity to have a discussion with your kids about family.

Repetitious as a rosary, witless, and devoid of story, this movie is another whiff at an attempt to turn a teeny kids book into an epic.
Let's see - Wild Things.. Cat in the Hat.. The Grinch... isn't it time we admit that you can't take 23 pages and stretch it into 2 hours? The wild things had me gnashing my terrible teeth, and snoring my terrible snores, and praying my desperate prayers that my kids didn't lash out wildly with boredom.
The only things that saves the movie is the Muppetized Wild Things themselves. Kids like staring at them the same way they like watching clothes tumble in the laundromat. Wild Things was a proverbial load and like the clothes in the laundromat, it seemed to take forever to finish.

The film displayed an innovative puppet/CG combo that worked very well, taking me back to the old Jim Henson years which have escaped us with the overuse of live action CG in recent years. The film was a drag at times but the message is what made it worth it. This wasn't just another story about a kid lost in his own world that finds himself in fantasy. In the real world, this kid may be seen as having symptoms of ADHD, ODD, even autism. These are issues with our children that we as parents need to understand in any perspective. Overall, I think it was a strong message driven story that focused on the importance of love, interaction, and an open mind when it comes to the most precious creatures on this earth...our children.

I would watch this with your family. A great way to break into discussion on issues children deal with in life today.
It helped my 5 year old granddaughter realize how easily we can hurt the feeling of our friends if we are not careful what we say and do. She did complain it didn't follow the book. My 12 year old grandson caught the parallels completely.
The Wild Things had wonderfully expressive faces as did Max. The projects they worked on together impressed and inspired my grandson.

Dreadful. I had high expectations. Saw "Being John Malkovich" and "Adaptation." Thought they were brilliant. Unfortunately, writers Mike Goldenberg and Dave Eggers are not Charlie Kauffman. "Where the Wild Things Are" played like a student film. As brilliant as Max Records was, Spike Jonze needed a much younger actor to make the lead character credible. A boy that age would simply not bite his mom. It was all downhill from there.

I remember the book from my childhood, and after seeing all the clips and reviews on tv, I thought I'd give it a try. The picture itself was amazing, the life like appearance of the monsters was a plus. This movie takes you back to your child hood, and imagination. I saw the similarities between Max and Carol, They both feel like they're alone, nobody understands them and that's why they rebel to anger. Once they meet, it's a union of friendship. I feel like this movie at times moved very slow. The film was different, it's not something you have seen before, in terms of the story and presentation. But overall, I enjoyed this unique movie. Be prepared to shed a tear or 2.

I read a great deal of reviews before taking my 3 year old and 5 year old to see this. There were many reviews that sad that it was too scary or depressing. I disagree.
I thought that they did a great job with the storyline, character development and dialogue The movie was visually stunning with a wonderful soundtrack.
The "scary" parts were defiantly kid OK. It was no more "scary" in those few parts than many of the classics that we all enjoyed as a kid. "The Wizard of Oz", " Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Snow White" were probably scarier than this movie.
Children who go with there parents will walk away feeling good about the movie and themselves after.
I would recommend the film to all ages.

I took my grandchildren (4, 5, 7)on Saturday afternoon, but before we went, we read the book so they might have a general idea what to expect. The "Wild Things" characters were almost identical to the illustrated "Wild Things" in the book. BEAUTIFUL! Grant it they took some liberties with the story, but as I explained to the kids, most movies don't match up exactly with books. Very young children would need much of the movie explained to them, but we found it most entertaining! and wasn't it refreshing to see a movie that was so simple and had such a good message?? as for the adults that were bored or had children that didn't get it, talk to the kids and give them some explanations, or maybe you just didn't get it either!

I took my 11 and 9 year-old kids and my 11 year-old enjoyed it, but my 9 year-old found it to be a little boring. It is a more quiet film than our kids are used to these days and tackles tough, family issues. It sparked a good conversation at dinner about which character they felt most reflected them and what it takes to keep a family intact. I loved the soundtrack, but it didn't resonate for the kids.

This movie is not really for children. We took our five yr. old daughter and while she actually "got" the parallel between Carol and Max, the symbolism and messages throughout the film were extremely deep. I think this will be an excellent piece for say, a high-school films class. That said, the cinematography was great, the soundtrack was even better and over-all the film, to use my wife's phrase, was very heavy. Also, Max Records' acting (especially non-verbal), was very, very impressive.

Where the Wild Things Are is an emotional movie, based on a childs journey and growth. Don't expect Disney-like lightheartedness, but do expect an indepth look into the complexities of a child's emotions, found on some level, in all of the characters in the movie. I took my 10 year old son. I don't recommend it for anyone under 10, as they won't get it, and may be bothered by some of the anger issues. It resulted in some great discussion between my son and I. I loved the way Max's real world paralleled his imaginary world, and how in one he was the child, and the other he was the adult. The two mirrored successfully giving the viewer alternate views of a situation. Gandolfini is an awesome big kid! Take your pre-teens and enjoy the journey.

I thought it was a really good movie. Took our 5 and 6 years olds to see it and they really thought it was great and wanted to stay and see it again.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

We really enjoyed the movie and thought the "Wild Things" were incredibly well done. Max was a natural - very expressive. Went opening night and it was mostly adults like us without kids. That tells you a lot about the following for the book.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Beautiful movie, wonderfully done, the production and the costumes had so much expression and feeling. A little too deep for young children, but if you explain to your kids the significance and what it teaches you, they'll get it. Very nice.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The wife and I took my 7 year old daughter to see this movie based on the book all three of us love. Warner Bros and Spike Jonze do an awsome job of bringing the Wild Things to life. They look almost exactly like the characters from the book. But the story that was created to turn a 10 sentence book into a movie really ended up very thin and pretty much too boring. Not to mention there is a scene in the move that just horrorfied my daughter and she had to jump into mommy's lap because she was frightened.
I would advise everyone who loves the Maurice Sendak story to watch this movie, but wait for it on Netflix.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie was incredible. It captured the anxiety and exhilaration of being a child perfectly. If you're looking for the next Shrek, this is not it. If you are looking to remember how powerless and lonely and sad you felt when you were 9, how every time you got in trouble, you would feel that jarring drop in your stomach because you were worried that you were a bad person, then this is the movie for you. I can see why children would not enjoy this movie. The movie is about a child but interprets the childhood experience in a way that only adults can understand. It brings us back to the source of our own fears and sadness. And it reminds us that in the end, they're just monsters in our head.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This was the most beautifully real kids movie I've ever seen. My 5 and 10 year old (and my husband and me!) were touched, and cried and it spurred a fantastic discussion after wards about family, relationships, life, and the use of imagination to help us deal with life's struggles. If you are an overprotective parent who thinks kids should believe life is a princess party, don't bother. For the rest, take your kids, hold them tight, cry along with them, and enjoy the wonder, sadness and magic that we got to experience through Max, one of the sweetest, most talented actors I've seen in a very long time. I haven't stopped thinking about this movie since I saw it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
